You will no doubt have noticed already that there have been two posts today in the OSM that have made pointed attacks on a single user.  Admittedly, one of these was much more inflammatory than the other, but both were clearly designed to provoke a negative response from the user in question.

I have chosen to leave these posts be for now and not delete or edit them myself, for two reasons.

(1) I like to give people the opportunity to do the right thing and delete or alter their posts themselves.

(2) More importantly, I want the Community to observe in full spotlight what kinds of exchanges I believe have contributed to the decline of the OSM, and what kinds of posts I don't want to see here anymore.

OSM is not going to be an easy place to moderate.  We are dealing with subjects that will likely attract people with diametrically opposed viewpoints, and conflict is inevitable.  Please don't make my job harder than it has to be by writing needless posts like these.

Of course, but I felt/feel the quantity of your sources is too much, and not that you shouldn't have sources to back up your claims .

Quoting lines from Jesus's speach is fair and all, but quoting an entire speach in my opinion makes your point less visible rather then backing it up. This is just a friendly suggestion to avoid further unpleasantness in the forums. (atleast I hope it came across as friendly )

Corribus, I'm rather certain that we both agree on a lot of things in this regard, but I can't keep from noticing certain subtleties that we shouldn't forget when it comes to assessing these things. This is NOT supposed to be an attack of any kind, it's just stating a fact as objectively as possible. Also I don't want to assume any deliberation on behalf of the author - it's just... well:

Quote:
I(f) someone claims Judaism stole monotheism from ReligionX I show writings of Judaism that are a thousand years older than ReligionX for instance to counter the claim.

addition in brackets and bold printing by me.
Now look at the word "stole".
All these exchanges are full of assumptions. No one ever said anything about stealing - how can you steal a religion or a god or monotheism. No, it was about BORROWING and ASSIMILATING certain concepts of ideas being around. These things take place all the time and are nothing bad.
Still, if phrased that way it does. At least it sounds that way.
Which is in my opinion characteristic for the attitude of this poster: things are subtly phrased differently so that you might constitute an attack of some kind - which would somewhat justify a somewhat harsher retort.

Anyway, no reason to discuss this, just a ... feedback.

Fair enough, JJ.

I don't delude myself that I'll be able to prevent or take reactive measures every time that someone throws a barb, or an innocent statement is interpreted as one.  That would take way too much time and in any case would be no fun for anyone.  Trust me, there will be carefully worded slights, and there will be times when people react to poor choices of words as if they were designed to be slights.

What I'm hoping from the Community is the following:

First, don't take everything so seriously.  There's no reason to draw your revolvers every time you think someone is saying something negative about you.  This place is for fun, after all, and supposedly centers around the fact that we all like a similar computer game.

Second, if something REALLY rubs you the wrong way, either ignore it or let me know about it.  Frankly, I'd prefer you HCMed me privately so that the Feedback Thread does not continue its tradition as a HeSaid-SheSaid bickering club.

I know you're a reasonable person, JJ.  I understand how the phrase you highlighted could be interpreted in the way you have laid out.  On the other hand, I think you can agree that it's nowhere near as obvious an insult as the one posted by Seraphim earlier today.  It is insults like those that I am primarily concerned with.

My philosophy is that if we eliminate those and start treating each other more respectfully, the other misunderstandings and misinterpretations will gradually disappear on their own.  It occurs to me that there are so many cries of insult around here these days because we go into a thread expecting to be insulted. So much so that I imagine some people get insulted when they feel they haven't been properly and expediently insulted.

Well, of course it's no insult.
It's more like, you make a pretty harmless comment on something , and the next thing you read is, anti-theist liars have been bashing Christianity again.

But, sure, you are right. If in doubt, don't post an answer.

Just use your common sense Corribus. It is simple to tell if someone uses Subtitles for insults, or if they use them for actual events in a thread.

Use your best judgement, we will stick by it if reasonable

It is difficult for me to see how my statement was an insult to anyone.

Certain people were saying the Jews were polytheists who only learned about monotheism when they were taken captive by Babylon. At that time, it is alleged, they edited their texts to lie and say they had been monotheists all along.

I think my use of the word "stole" in the statement was quite fitting given their allegation of the dishonesty they accused the Jews of doing.

Also, if JJ wants to get knit picky over words, when I made a typo today and typed "God of the Bile" instead of God of the Bible JJ wrote, "Isn't it curious how sometimes a sentence with a typo seems to make so much more sense than without?" I could have taken that statement to be highly offensive since he called my God the God of the Bile. But I did not run here crying about it seeking to get some penalty imposed on him.

Corribus, the way the OSM has been allowed to be for some time can be changed as long as are fair and consistent to each side of the debates.

I have pledged to do my best to be fair and consistent.  But making  OSM a better place will take a concerted effort by everone, not just the mods.  I hope that you will do your part as well.

The members are the ones that can change the forum for better or worse. Mods can't tell you how to post and they most certainly can't change it, only you can. Moderators moderate, they don't force you to post in a certain way. They can certainly help calm things down when debates get out of hand or off topic but they can't change how a poster posts. Corribus has done a good job already and I'm sure he'll continue to do a good job for a very long time but you can't expect him (you as in people in general) to be the be all and end all of this forum in regards to how people post, how debates are dealt with, how people are towards one another etc.

Just felt like throwing this out there.

That promises to become interesting. What exactly do you mean with "dishonesty"?

Well, no, you could not have taken that statement as highly offemsive, because it isn't. I did not call your god the god of the bile. I could say, it was you and could have made a much more stinging joke, but I didn't, because it would have been ... inappropriate. Tne joke is on you anyway.
Here is the quote:
Your sentence:
Allah is described completely differently than the God of the Bile.
My statement:
Isn't it curious how sometimes a sentence with a typo seems to make so much more sense than without?

Now compare the sentences with and with out typo. While there are differences between Allah and God, there are also a lot of similarities. The God of the Bile, however, whom I don't know, is indeed described completely different than the God of the Bile, because the latter isn't described at all, which means with typo your statement makes more sense than without.
Don't be so grumpy. God can look after himself.

OSM Feedback is about giving feedback about the forum, directing moderators to certain threads, directing them to possible QP posts and general feedback about the forum...NOT a general personal discussion between two members, like you are doing. Just saying, that's all, because this thread gets dragged off topic way too much. Feel free to delete my post (or I can) later on.

You have both made your points and I appreciate you clarifying your respective meanings.

If you have anything else to say directly related to helping me moderate the OSM better, then I value the feedback.  But further wrangling over what word usage does and does not constitute an actionable insult in this particular case is neither helpful nor productive.

Also, just for everyone's information I reserve the right to keep a tight ship in the Feedback Thread and prune superfluous material regularly, particularly conversations which devolve into pointless arguments.  Please do not be offended if your posts in this Thread get deleted without prior notice.

I appreciate your cooperation.
