Corribus worked as a scientist for the American Secret Service for years, effortlessly inventing things like the wheel, dolphins, democracy and isotope separation, when one day a freak accident occurred in his lab - browsing HC next to a nuclear waste tank made him accidentally press MELTDOWN instead of REPLY and things were never the same again. Now he seems like an ordinary family man - doing science and raising kids by day...

But at night he becomes supermod! Not stopping at bringing order and justice to the OSM and the VW, the two most horrendous places a poster's mind might comprehend, he furiously struck down and sorted out 15 pages of ancient evil lurking in the depths of the Other Side. Is this merely the beginning of his crusade of... sorting things out... for some reason or will the sheer conjoined malice of the VW and OSM put a stop to his righteous deeds?

We'll see in the next episode of MODER****IN' MODS! Aired weekly, only on Discovery channel.

RE: Cor's last post in the religion thread:

Cor, I don't mean to be crass here or anything, but by allowing a topic on such a touchy subject to be open for these two self-entitled goons to exchange their usual valentine wishes, you are basically reaping what you/they sow.

I mean... come on. On touchy subjects like these, people have great difficulty not getting to personally invested into the matter, like their honor is at stake or smth. It's just rly pathetic and I don't know why such topics keep re-opening themselves because they ALWAYS end in vicious quotewars between side A and side B, no matter how strongly moderated OSM is.

(I re-posted it here as to Cor's suggestion)

Any subject can be a "touchy" subject. Let's not confine discussion to tea cups. Even then there could be debates on whether there should even be tea cups (someone may strongly feel tea is too bad for one's health for the nanny state to allow), how large tea cups should be, or what color/designs are best.

Anyone not wishing their positions to be challenged should perhaps not participate in the OSM or should avoid threads about subjects they feel strongly about. I've really not read the Tavern much. Perhaps "touchy" subjects are not discussed there much?

Or we could just sit around slapping each other's backs and telling each other how intelligent we are to all hold the same viewpoints about everything.

Lexxan -

There are no forbidden topics in the OSM.  But there are forbidden behaviors, and they are explained very clearly in the Code of Conduct, as well as my post here.  Anyone who doesn't like these rules is free to take their case to management or find another website at which to post.

Incidentally, your own post violates these rules, so before you cast stones at the posting behavior of other people, you should look to your own posting behavior.

So what good reason is there to close the religion thread? I mean, it's not the thread's fault when some people can't shut up, even if they have nothing to say.

I have to say, that I find this pretty ridiculous.
However, I will listen to the mod's reasoning, before I make any conclusions.

So, Corr, what's the matter?

I warned everyone I would close the thread in question if you couldn't find a way to discuss religion in a reasonable, respectful manner.  My warning was not heeded.  Hence, the thread has been closed.

The thread will be reopened in due course, at which point you may try again.

Generations of HCers will be grateful to me some day. That's worth a few of JJ's nerves, I suppose.

I've reopened the religion thread, so you can now try this whole civility thing again.  Next time I have to close the thread, it will be for a longer period of time and I will also issue some individual silences as well, starting with the minimum sentence and working my way up from there.

Since this is the feedback thread I feed back.

Right, I get it now.

Let's see, always jumping in with some snide remark, trying to demonstrate a superior casualness combined with a certain intellectual wit - and of course always have the last word...

Conclusion: Baklava is aspiring to become the OSM Class Clown.

Current status: too often overdoing it, leaving the realm of superior casualness and intellectual wit and entering into the domain of bad manners in coincidence with bad taste.

Danger: Being viewed as nihilistic fool (in the sense of jester) who isn't taken serious or even ignored.

Career hint: the successful ones always manage to defuse teacher's wrath in the last moment, usually with something charmingly witty and self-ironic, instead of insisting on being churlishly impudent.
What also helps, are regular stunning and really enlightening contributions demonstrating the ability and the willingness to be serious and constructive, where necessary and helpful.

Way to go, Bak.

And who really thinks there will be anything new in any religion thread coming up the next years?

You can tell a blind person about the nice shine of a red color, and he may listen every time you start to speak, but he will never feel the way you do. "Red" will be something completely different in his imagination....until the day his eyes will open and start to see.

Let those who want to live like it is written a book do so...and let the others live like they want to. No one will ever convince the other one as long as anything special will happen in the life of one of them. Be it positive or negative.

Peace.

Well, that's one function of a class clown: they somewhat soften the mood of the class bullies by making them laugh or at least glee.

For that - for glee - he makes fun of other pupils. Glee is easier to understand for the bully than real humor, because bullies are usually - but not always - of a simpler mind.

The other thing is to subtly make fun of the teacher, though, giving especially those pupils a laugh which suffer from the teacher AND the bullies.

The really good ones now and then even risk a joke at the expense of the bully - which is in fact more risky for the entourage of the bully than for the clown, since they have to make the right noises. The bully doesn't want to be laughed at, but also he wants to appear as someone who appreciates a good joke, even if it's on him, so the entourage must be amused, but not too much.

Sometimes, a certain crew of six-graders strolls by our imaginary schoolyard.

They're the only six-graders that you don't want to be when you're a fourth-grader. They're the OSM atheists.

Corr won't be happy.

Am I guilty of provocation?

Maybe, but I also think there is enough truth in my last posts in this thread to justify them.

I've nothing against the clown aspiration as such, it's just that I think you should up your game a little, Baklava.

What truth, that I'm trying to become the class clown of the OSM?

Considering you're German, I understand you naturally believe people need to invest a lot of effort and practice to stop being serious. But believe me when I say I have neither the need nor ambition to become the funniest man on HC. Nor the most adult one. Nor the most... anything, really. This is HC, for chrissakes.

I understand Corry'll gimme a break. I've been snarky for the past two days or so. In one thread. Feels good once in a while, especially when it's directed at folks like you, and I personally don't believe that discussion has been made any worse by my participation, on the contrary. I said a few serious things I wanted to mention, which I don't think people said there before (including replying to your arguments civilly and whatnot, which didn't lead us anywhere), and then proceeded to caricaturize all the feces-throwing inside the thread until it reached a breaking point, by engaging in what I thought of as sharp but still casual, past-time sparring with you til the teacher came along and you pointed your finger at me. You have, on the other hand, been acting like the angsty grandpa know-it-all next door since you joined HC, to anyone, anywhere. And you're still here with us.

Besides, Corry knows how much crap I give about being screwed for speaking my mind. I don't think I'm crossing any lines, and if he thinks I am, I believe he's quite aware of where the penalty button is without anyone slimily reminding him of it.

Baklava, apart from the fact that I find your deliberations a tad to condescending, but what is really bugging me is the fact that you seem to think it's all about you.

I had no problem whatsoever with out little chit-chat, on the contrary, which you say, "didn't lead us anywhere" - but where do you think SHOULD or even COULD have led us except getting a somewhat better understanding of our viewpoints?

The strange thing is, that when I asked a general question to noone specifically, so that everyone could just answer - which, for example Fauch did -, and which I was really interested in hearing about, you suddenly had nothing else to contribute than bullsnow.

You could just have shut the snow up - you didn't have to go on and on and on, until Corr would close the whole thing down.

Then, you proceed to troll the feedback thread about how proud you are that your posts are last on 2 closed religion threads.

So YOU had your fun, YOU cared squat about anything, YOU just went ad hominem "for the lulz of it", YOU, YOU, YOU, and to hell with everyone else.

Also, no one did "slimily remind Corr where the penalty button is".

Lastly, I noticed that you kind of very often play the German card against me. If I'm not wrong you are from the country that is now called Serbia. Do you really think that's a recommendation?

All this cries CLOWN. Or JESTER, if you prefer. You obviously do it because of the fool's license that comes with it and allows overstepping borders - unpunished.

But you must be FUNNY for that, not just churlish or rude. And you should be able to take a joke at your expense.
