Lol that guy you were playing must of had some spell related nightmares. Most of those i have seen freqently on the zone, but there are some quite new and original.

3rd,4th lvl scrols-lol this makes little sense to me(town portal??)
level 5 magic -why on earth is there a lvl 5 mage guild in the first place then if i can't use it?
One guy who can builds a lvl 5 mage guild and gets to use it on a template like panic for exemple deserves my respect.
armaggedon-i bet u were playing dungeon (people still fear you rychen, i heard it on the zone even last night)
no grail-nuff said lol

My guess is that you played Dungeon and your oponent had a less magical town(Is it the omnipresent Castle??) and tried to strech the rules to his own advantage/protection.

NO dd\ok fly\ok flux\ok necro\ok diplo\ok carto\ok hillfort\ok grail\?? hr\ok rr\ok log\?main or at all? 3/4main\????!!!! mullich\ok fmg\of course 3rd lvl scrolls??! level5 magic\only needed on jebus arma\???? cons,hives\ok doublebuild\only on jebus townsit\??

thats 6 rules not needed. I see it too some rules are needed some are not. Unfortunately many players use rules to gain advantages over the opponent. I dont play those players

The only way they will ever learn, is to simply tell them theyr attitude sucks, and that they need to find another opponent

1 rule I didn't see mentioned was "no joiners".  What is the opinion of this rule?  For me, I see it the same as "diplomacy" even though it can happen with heroes without the diplo skill.  I personally like to have this as a rule even though this happens very rarely.

(I couldn't agree with you more Rychen)
Personally since I've joined HC and played online the one thing I've found to drive me nuts are all the rules and all the "equal templates".

I found it fun when I'm running around with a artifact that gives my hero and edge.  Me and Conan use to build up mage guilds just to get level 4-5 spells that would do serious damage!  Now all these rules and templates take the fun out of the "new game with new posibilities" that we use to love.  Great!  We get to end fight ant potentially, our armies will be even, with even stats and even magic.  BORRING!!!  I use to love creating a hero hunter to chase down and pick off smaller wondering heroes!!  I miss the adventure!

Anyone can master one map or template.  But do I want to?  Nope, I like playing the game for its variety.

Angel, you said that the templates make for shorter games?  sorry to disagree but your turns still took 20 minutes each (if not more) and our 4 hour game got no further than an end fight in week 2 or 3.  how exciting.

I may be a noob looking to play with noobs and may never develop "the max potential of the game" but hey, my memories of my XL maps with Conan over a case of beer and pizza that lasted well into the night and ended because we were too drunk to see was way more fun than sitting at home (by myself) waiting to see the damn hour glass get to my colour!!

imo.

I agree with Jebus.

Now that I'm playing templates and that you can only play it one way, the fun is to build angels day 6 and not loose any, then take the cons and go break in new territory. Too me, I don't see the fun in that.

Yeah the game could be unbalanced, but sometimes it works to your advantage and sometimes not. - That's why you can play other games against other players.

I've decided to stop playing these set templates and set rules to play only players who like random/no rules. However, I respect others that wish to play with rules, but I find I have alot more fun the way I play it, the way the game was initially intended to be played.

In any case, I'm sure Fabrice has seen the effect of a non balanced game on internet play and so H5 might me the answer to all our problems.

well you're the first....

when you play cards, do you make sure that everyone has the same chance of getting the perfect hand??  Nope
when you play risk, do you roll 100 times and the player with the highest percentage of success wins the battle?
no.  deep down, these games are based on chance.

If you get the shackles of war and I get the scope(?)
should I start over or write to the creators and complain?  No, I just make sure that the army that goes after the shackles is equipped to win (kinda like in real life).  And you know what?  If you the cards aren't in your hand this time, you're supose to like the game enough to want to play again for redemption.

Well, I do agree that a lot of rules do control the randomness of a game... but I do believe that a few rules are necessary to make a game playable/enjoyable.

1) Diplo or Joiners - In battle, your earned troops (from castle, cons, hives, dwellings) vs my earned troops is a fair battle... I can handle 2nd and 3rd castle build... but with diplomacy and joiners, a player may gain a ridiculous amount of troops by doing nothing and paying nothing for them.  In risk, do you all of a sudden put an extra 40 pieces in a country because it is the day of Indonesia?

2) No Fly - A fun game can become not so fun when someone gets angel wings or fly and can fly all over the board picking up guarded relics and pan boxes without having to battle.  A player can also avoid an opponent by sitting within range of his castle, but on the other side of a mountain for example... causing the opponent to sit by his castle all day waiting to fight.

3) No DD - Similar reason to Fly.  Can DD in opponents land with 1 troop, take his main castle, then DD out.  I don't see any skill at all in this.

Things like grail, if the game goes long enough and you find it, so be it... carto, in my opinion, it ruins the adventure and surprise of the game... but if opponent wants it, so be it.

Jebus, you and Conan are buddies off line... I know I play a different (more ruthless) style of game when I play my brother and local friends.  Maybe if I were to visit Ottawa and play Hotseat with you guys, I would enjoy the same kind of game

Well after your last post, I'm not sure you'd be welcome!! LOL

you know what?  if you have DD, fly or boots, then I need to change my defensive strategy...
hey end fight guys, maybe now you'll have to defend your castles for once....

it adds an element of excitment and surprise

Remember Darth Jebus... Don't hate the playa, hate the game

If someone wants to DD to my Castle to battle me, fine.  But what is there to adjust to when opponents main is sitting where nobody can reach him/her and opponent refuses to battle.  Only sitting there making sure you don't leave your castle.

You aren't one of those risk players that makes your opponent stay in the game with only 1 army in 1 country, and you refuse to attack it and end the game, are you?

In my eyes, just like in Monopoly, just like in Risk, just like in Cards, where there is reward, there had to have been some sort of risk involved.  If you put up hotels on Boardwalk and Park Place, you are risking landing on New York with Hotel and having to sell your stuff for 1/2 price.  Risk, you attack, you risk losing by unlucky rolls of the dice.  Cards, you may be playing someone who is good at bluffing... do you risk staying in with a full house and opponent raises you LOTS of money?

With diplo and angel wings or dd or fly... you can get great rewards with NO risk at all.  At least with hives and cons, you have to battle and risk losing some troops for a reward of possible better troops.

Then maybe you need to take HIS towns and force him out!!
If he want's to sit there fine...  You can make the decision to send out some bait and take a run for his castles...  fact is I've had it save my butt sometimes but it was a sanctuary... opponents big hero kept taking my town and I could take the town back and hide all in the same turn.  (not the most honourable but I lived)
And what's the difference between someone keeping you in your town due to DD or with a HUGE army... I've see people refuse to attack but just sit there....

you have to play with SOME etiquette

jebus, if the opponent you played have an IQ level above 65, I am sure you would lose in any case if he had DD or fly. He DD/fly, you no dd/fly? he will win, simple as that, if thats not the case, then he/she plays heroes like my grandma plays soccer

Well getting to the main point of my argument,
it's a matter of chance that he got it and if that person beats me because of those spells then maybe my luck will change in the next game!
At least it's more exciting than :
week 1
week 2
endfight
game over
(there's 8 hours of my life I'll never see again)

(why not just create template where you're at endfight... you fight, game over...  you loose alot less time. )

Still having nightmares of Angelito eh Jebus??

Not all of us are that good. In week 3 day 1 when you are watching the leprachaun dance, I will probably be doing the same thing on my turn at that point of the game. Maybe meet in middle for endfight... who knows.  I don't see how the following is any better

week 1 - build for castle and as many dwellings as possible... fight for resources and gold
week 2 - fight cons and hives, build stats, look for external lvl 6 or 7 dwellings
week 3 - buy army go to fight major guards.... whooops, what is this, someone is in my castle already... game over!!

Mostly because it was a four hour game with a four minute conclusion....
But if you and I are playing, the odds of either one of us having DD in week 3 and a hero strong enough to catch someone off guard is rather unlikely...
(but we're moving away from the initial point of rules and templates...DD is just one example and my opinion is general it all.  I'd rather take the chance that you have DD or Fly then play with that many rules)

There are a few gamebreakers...

Diplo
D/D
Fly
Cart

Any of the above can win you the game(unless your opponent gets them as well) The rest are just aesthetic choices or people trying to balance it all out to boredom.

Grail is an interesting one...if the template is long, looking for it may not kill you, but if its a template like balance and you devote many heroes to the search for it...you will lose.

I suck at this game, so I don't care if my opponent beats me with a force 5 or 10 times bigger than mine Therefore I wouldn't play with any rules except no hit&run. I truly hate HnR ever since in HoMM1, I lost with a barbarian army several times larger than that of my opponent's, who just kept going into the portal with a phoenix on a fresh hero, armageddoning me and pulling a runner >_>
