The marksmen are very good shooters, you get them early and in large numbers. I also like the harpy hags.Bt...there's a small catch...harpy hags can't block shooters, because they strike and return all the time!
The dwarves-too slow, even with speed artifacts and the upgrade most of the time they never get to hit anyone.
Gargoyles-No matter how obsidian they are with their upgrade, the marksman is still better.
Gogs: Better off unupgraded, because their fireball attack can harm your own creatures, wich is terribly annoying to me!!
Zombies: The worst of the lot!
Wolf Riders& Raiders: Pretty good, pretty good, but I liked the wolves when they were solo,in h1 and h2,so I guess they get 2nd place, bowing to the marksmen.
Lizardmen & Lizard Warriors: Nothing special here...
Air & Storm Elementals: They look nice,so I give 'em 3rd place

Well, storm elementals really do get first in a 1v1, due to their extremely high stats.
I'd say (not counting Conflux, but using the Shadow of Death stats for Fortress)
1. Harpies
2. Marksmen
3. Wolf Raiders
4. Lizard Warriors
5. Obsidian Gargoyles
6. Battle Dwarves
7. Magogs
8. Zombies

Imo Storm elemental and marksmen are the most useful.

Zombies are brilliant...
In the later stages of the game, they become even more useful. Perhaps you should hoard armies of zombies and see how powerful they can be.
The disease can be useful against level 1 units usually.

3. wolf raider - they deal insane damage if you manage to keep them alive
4. harpy hag - low damage, but fast and have no retalitation
5. lizard warrior - shooter with ok damage

Well my opinion has changed lately. I generally like playing as Necro, just cause I love being evil, but also because if you play it right you can be very very strong mid game. With making my new Campaign for Necro I have been playing round with a lot of lvl 2 chars for killing and my opinion is based mainly o how badly they are hurting me under AI control...
1. storm elemental - These guys are way too strong for lvl 2, they are more a lvl 3 if not 4.
2=. marksmen - Ok with the shooting twice they hurt, but only a tie with wolf Raiders.
2=. wolf raider - Ok the main advantage to them is speed and attack twice
4. Gargoyle, these guys are fast and do ok dmg, larger numbers hurt a lot.
5. harpy hag - Its the moving away they have that gets them their placement.
6. magog - Come on these guys are better than lizards lol
7. battle dwarf- Use them as a defense for the rest.
8. lizard warrior - pretty useless
9. zombies - Ok I almost put them above lizards, but they are just too slow, give them one square more movement and their ability to suck up hits from the enemy to let your hordes of Skellies go crazy put them above lizards and maybe Dwarves...Only 1 more square of movement..add Stoneskin and these guys are defensive machines. They aren't as bad as everyone thinks... Oh and further on Zombies as mentioned earlier in mid to end game huge numbers of them are great to use especially with disease at that point.

Lizard is decent, it has pretty good stats and is a shooter,(It's only buffed in SoD, though) it just doesn't have a special. Zombies are good for damage soaking, but they seem just too slow for anything but sieges.(defense)

IF, you play them RIGHT, against STUPID AI,maybe. But if stupid ai controls hags and i MUST control marksman to make them attack every turn they lose.

Would be interesting to know your setup in these tests.
1. Did u create 1 stack only for both creatures?
2. What terrain did the battlefield have?
3. Did u consider the starting order when 2 units have same speed?
And yes, maretti is right. Marksmen should win vs Hags, and I would even say Lizzard Warriors win vs hags also.

Better judged by 12 than carried by 6.

1. 1 stack
2. Dirt
3. When two creatures had the same speed, then the outcome was so sure that the winner stack could have at least 1 more hit from full stack.
I will do marksman/harpie hags again and post the battle here.
BTW lizard war. won both marksmen and harpys. Marksman did almost the same amount of dmg. (really little more) to lizards with two shots than lizards with one shot, but marksmen ran out of 2x12 shots so lizards could shoot them and lower the numbers of marksmen so finally melee there were just more lizards. AND lizards have 8 def. so they won
Also I think lizards won harpys just because they have high defence so they just outlasted them
ADDITION:
The battle I promised
Two weeks of marksmen - 18
Two weeks of Harpy Hags - 16
----
Hags move
Marksmen do 43 dmg - 3 Hags perish
Marksman do 46 dmg - 3 Hags perish
--Marksmen left 18/Hags Left 10--
Hags move next to marksmen, but don't attack
Marksmen do 26 dmg - 2 Hags perish
Hags retaliate 14 dmg - 1 Marksman perishes
--Marksmen left 17/Hags left 8--
Hags do 14 dmg - 1 Marksman perishes
Marksman do 19 dmg - 1 Hag perishes
Hags retaliate 21 dmg - 2 Marksmen perish
--Marksmen left 14/Hags left 7--
Hags do 20 dmg - 2 Marksmen perish
Marksmen do 14 dmg - 1 Hag perishes
Hags retaliate 12 dmg - 2 Marksmen perish
--Marksmen left 10/Hags left 6--
Hags do 16 dmg - 1 Marksman perishes
Marksmen do 11 dmg - 1 Hag perishes
Hags retaliate 12 dmg - 1 Marksman perishes
--Marksmen left 8/Hags left 5--
Hags do 17 dmg - 2 Marksmen perish
Marksmen do 7 dmg
Hags do 17 dmg - 2 Marksmen perish
--Marksmen left 4/Hags left 5--
Hags do 12 dmg - 1 Marksman perishes
This is done with auto battle with pausing at the very last moment possible.
Now we have 3 Marksmen with health of 5/10 against 5 Harpy Hags with health of 2/14. 1 Hag probably dies more but I couldn't have checked how the battle would have been flowing if Hags would have killed all Marksmen. I tested quick combat more few times and harpys won them all.

I wonder if it would be different if you did play both creatures the way you would actually play them in the game??
I am not questioning your stats at all cause I tried it as well and hags beat marksmen case of no retaliate...

That is true, but I wouldn''t have just one stack of Hags either, then again i wouldn't have hags =)) But If I had them I wouldn't single stack them either...
I think the single stack is probably the best theory, but if we want we could try testing them in different stacks from 1-7...?

I think its ok to let them meet 1 stack vs 1 stack, but you should play both stacks and let the hags wait round 1. Futhermore you should move the marskmen instead of using meleeattack and then wait for moral. With a close to equal number of morals im sure the marskmen will win even if the hags get moral first.

Sure I agree maretti that Marksmen can beat the harpies BUT
If were talking about a stack then I dont know depending on how many are in a stack.
All you have to do is wait & take a couple shots from the marksmen.
Then land right next to them so you can fight without retaliation.
Now if were talking about only one creature each then yea the hags are dead

Tatatadaaa... Full (w/o storm elemetals) table
1 point goes for winning/0p for losing
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Sum:
Marksman (1) n/a 1p 0p 0p 0p 0p 1p 1p 3p
Battle Dwarf(2) 0p n/a 0p 0p 0p 1p 1p 1p 3p
Lizard Warrior(3) 1p 1p n/a 1p 1p 0p 1p 1p 6p
Harpy Hag(4) 1p 1p 0p n/a 1p 1p 1p 1p 6p
Wolf Raider(5) 1p 1p 0p 0p n/a 1p 1p 1p 5p
Obs. Gargoyle(6) 1p 0p 1p 0p 0p n/a 1p 1p 4p
Magog(7) 0p 0p 0p 0p 0p 0p n/a 1p 1p
Zombie(8) 0p 0p 0p 0p 0p 0p 0p n/a 0p
That makes:
1. Lizard Warrior, coz they beated Harpys - !defence 8!
2. Harpy Hag - mostly for no retal
3. Wolf Raider - double attack makes it for them
4. Obs. Gargoyle - They got this place just for their strenght
5. Marksmen - at last. Two shots are great things but fighting meele it means 1/4 total strenght only. And against Lizards they don't have so much shotsto last
6. Battle Dwarves - nothing special of this place I think
7. Magogs - They even had troubles to kill Zombies
8. Zombie - No words
Mostly I would put zombies to seventh place coz with magogs there is a good chance to kill your own creatures
ADDITION: And the first place goes to....
