I'm partly surprised...

I know most people would pick Centaur Captains but I am really shocked that skeletons aren't considered even as runner-up. Surely they don't have the stats but the amount you get them? That is what playing with Necropolis is all about: Necromancy. Or do you guys play some few games with Necropolis that you don't think that's why they aren't so good? In long game Skeletons start making so much damage because of their quantity that they beat centaur captains any day. And almost all of them are free!

Just cannot believe people don't mention them...

what i think

sprites are the best lvl 1 creatures . why ? because you upgrade them very fast in the beginning of the game and then you can start cleaning the map. do you know you can actually beat lots of dendroid guard in the 4-th day of the game ? all you have to do is wait then hit and then run. and repeat the process until you win. i always play on impossible level - network or against computer and i have to say that in my whole experience they help you gather the most resources and money in the early stage of the game. and this counts very much.

Agreed with eidolon on easy resource collection with sprites. Just to get myself Ciele...
And Sha-Men is right, I saw posts were people considered skeletons as a best creature overall. If this topic is about best(strong and fast) then my pick is centaurs and pikemen, if it is about best(usefulness) then definately skeletons and sprites.

Centaur Captains are the best.  They have as many HP and as much damage as Halberdiers, and their higher speed ensures them the first strike advantage.
Skeletons?  Sure, you can get a lot of them, but they're only a slighlty above-average level 1.
Master Gremlins?  Can somebody please explain to me what good they are?  Any decent army has a fast stack or two that can reach them in 2-3 rounds.  Then, they're just weaklings with low HP and pathetic damage.

What Master Gremlins are for?

They are there to make an alluring target for the opponent, everybody seems to love to target them.

Would the same apply for Gremlins, or if the upgrade for the Gremlins were something like 'Halberdiers'? No, then the opponent would be tempted to go for another shooter-unit like the Magi instead.

The damage the Master Gremlins does in hand-to-hand combat is very low, but the attack still eats up a retaliation for your Iron Golems if you place them carefully.

A difference between the Master Gremlins and the Gargoyles and the Golems is that you can ressurrect the former but not the two latter.

CC waits Halbierders moves closer. CC attacks Halberdier retaliates. Next Turn: CC attacks Halberdier retaliates. Halberdier attacks CC retaliates. Next Turn: CC attacks Halberdier retaliates.

Speed is a huge advantage in battle field (which is the main reason Sir Mullich should be banned from almost all maps.). You can wait your enemies out and then do two attacks.

Although...

Although I am a huge fan of the Angels Castle I must admit I prefer skeletons because if I loose some I can regenerate them by fighting weaker wondering armies...

Thunder, I don`t know who will win between these two but you forget one tactic(strategy?move?) in your example. Instead of two attacks of CC`s some players will receive just one just with defending their halbeirdiers instead moving them within reach of CC`s.

I don't know who will win between CCs and Halberdiers. However, I think CCs are more useful because of their speed.

Master Gremlins are good in some cases, but their hand-to-hand penalty make them almost useless at close range, except that they use up the enemy's retaliation.

Skele is only good in horde. If we're talking about 1 on 1, they are only average.

Before patch, master gremlin is too powerful as lv1 by MG rush. Even after patch, they are among the best lv1 that you can rely upon to clear lightly guarded mines. At later stage, they are good baits for AI and let your archmage and titan shoot for more rounds.

CC can beat halibers by waiting. Hal cannot over-wait CC.
