What
I call best to the unit that has more influence in the game...so there i'll go
1. Skeletons: Skeletons where the most problematic unit on heroes because of necromancy, and skeleton transformer, they can be amassed on such numbers that can beat the level 7th units, that's the reason i think the first prize go for them.
2. gremlins: What would be of tower if they didn't have such a powerfull ranged level 1 unit? Well worst than they actually are. Master gremlins are the key of tower, and always a gret unit to have, on ever stage of the game.
3. Centaurs: Centaurs are very good melee unit that gives rampart a good excelent shooter blocker, and very scary unit once upgraded on final battle (Even is very good to upgrade them if the zone is fill of good shooters) Centaurs speed allows rampart to have fast scouts for a cheap price.
4.Pixies: the upgraded version of them, is a very usefull units, that gives conflux, good scouts, a good hit and runner,and fast food to block, and confuse the slow ai units. And they come on huge numbers.
5.Pikemans: They are slow, a little expensive and don't come on great numbers, but they are though. on cleaning they are more than acceptable as stack that hit and food, on heroes battle, they are one of the few level 1 unit you will have to worry to kill. I lost many times beacause my oponent had left that stack of 250 halberdiers.
6.Troglodites: I will never know if i valorate them so much beacuse shakti comes with so much, that they do marvelus or beacuse troglodites are good enough. Anyway They are good food beacuse of the numbers, and have an exceptional attack. And dungeon is glad to have them on his army
7.Gnoll: Those guys are the bad version of the pikemans, you use them on first week, because they are acceptable on fight, enought say, they work is done there.
8.Goblin: Enough, say, goblin aren't great, their acceptable speed, and cheap price, makes them acceptable, but face it...they don't have much influence of the game more than food. (and not the best one)
9.Imp: Well , they are deamon food, and food, only food, but worst...an expensive food, this unit suck..... And his only paper on the game make me think on mcdonalds.

Nice post, although without Necromancery (and sometimes Skeleton Transformer) skeletons are nothing...

Here is how i rate 1st level creatures:
1st place-Gnolls and gnoll marauders
2nd place-Goblins and hobgoblins
3rd place-Skeletons and skeleton warriors
4th place-Imps and familiars
5th place-Centaurs and centaur captains
6th place-Gremlins and master gremlins
7th place-Pikemen and halberdiers
8th place-Pixies and sprites
9th place-Troglodytes and infernal troglodytes
This is what i think of them.

My oppinion:
1. Master Gremlins (archers, cheap)
2. Skeletons (necromancy rulez)
3. Centaur Captains (really quick)
4. Halberdiers (not so weak really)
5. Troglodytes (cheap, immune for blind )
6. Imps (very cheap, jump so funny )
7. Goblins (weak)
8. Gnolls (weaker)

Lvl 1 is the most tricky. I am not counting the nbrs just the most useful for each town I guess.
1. Master gremlins. Just invaluable for Tower until u get magis.
2. Cent Capt. Really just a backup unit and protector of the elves in early game. But what nice help.
3. Sprites. Storm Elementals are really the power early but if u get slow enemies u get no losses. But vs faster units or shooters they are pretty worthless. Almost not good enough to block shooters.
4. Halberides. Sturdy and last long. But really not a factor early when it's all about marksmen, monks swordsmen and other units.
Doesn't help much vs shooters either.
5. Gnoll M.. Like Halberides but little less hp. Not that important.
Just there as fooder and with good defense last a little longer than other lvl 1.
6. Skell warrior. Well, really an average lvl unit. Decent hp, rather low speed, ok offense. What u do get is many in the end and then they do become dangerous. Still a special case.
7. Hobgoblins. Decent speed but very poor defense, and hp. A better variation of familiars, which doesn't say much.
8. Inf. Trogs. Well, helpful enough early on but a bit too low hp, defense and speed. blind immunity is worthless. Whoever cares about the trogs anyway?
9. Familiars. Like all inferno troops(besides cerberi) they are terrible for their lvls. Low hp, and die so fast. What is even more bizarre is that they cost a fortune. So once again inferno has to pay at least the same for their critters and get so much less.
Not even good as demon fodder cause u need armies with hp to do that
Not gonna bring the neutrals into it cause they don't matter

Agree with every word except I'd switch 6 and 7. I'd say that Gnolls are more important to fortress than Trogs to dungeon, because dungeon gets hags as level 2 creatures.

1. Sprites
Most powerfull level 1 unit by far. Everything except shooters is easy prey for them early on. That way your hero levels up pretty fast. In combination with air-/stormelementals, a very strong army.
2. Skeletons
Not too usefull early on, when necromancy is basic and the amount of skellies is low. They're pretty slow, so they can't fight too much early on. But the longer the game lasts, the more a threat they become due to their amount of course.
3. Centaurs
Very strong level 1 unit. Fast, 2-hex (helps to protect elfes) and in combination with elves, the second best low level combo in the game imho.
4. Pikemen
Tough guys but slow. No waste of a turn due to building upgrade, coz the upgrade is not needed till the end (in opposit to gremlins for example)
5. Gnolls
Often underestimated, but really tough guys they are. You can take full crypts early on with a handfull of those little fellows. Upgrade not important till the end.
6. Gremlins
Without upgrade, they die too fast. Upgrading on the other hand often costs u an important day of build (Castle, Giants...). As Shooters, those fellows deal good damage, especially in combination with a few single Mastergenies (Cast bless, stoneskin, precision, prayer and frenzy on a stack of 100 mastergremlins and see how much damage they will deal..)
7. Imps
Often underestimated aswell. Low stats, but they come in hugh numbers and are pretty cheap. In combination with gogs and 2 efreets, they can even take out a devil dwelling..
8. Troglodytes
Without Shakti, they are really bad. The first shooter of dungeon is level 3 (like rampart), so u only have weak troggies and weak harpies (hugh damage range is a disadvantage).
9. Goblins
Normally, u get around 50-60 of them day 1. Not enough to do many fights, coz u dont wanna risk all your wolves that early. So they just play the "bait" in your early army when u got 3 rocs and 1 behemot.

I too will go for Centaur Captains.
In my opinion, I think this is the only level where I have no doubt what so ever about which is the best unit. Their speed is amazing! Superior level 1-sprinters that both do more damage and have better health than the second fastest (Familiars and Hobgoblins).

Skeletons
You just can't go past the fact that these guys can't be blinded, cursed, deathstared, a number of other things plus you get a large multitude of these guys, and theres no need to restock at a castle when you can gain masses of these through Necro. Skeleton transformer gives you even more, and having Galthran or Thant makes you near impossible to overcome.
I still like Master Gremlins best, but Skeletons are just pure ownage.

I still like Master Gremlins best, but Skeletons are just pure ownage.
Yeah, topping up your army as you get your hero up is so damn useful.
If you get a second hero with diplomacy then you can increase the numbers by stupid amounts.
Don't forget beserk immunity too

Lets say it this way:
I had 20 gnolls and 5 lizardmen on a hero I just bought. The hero had enough magic to 2 magic arrows, still with only that I bet 32 wolf raiders... I love gnolls

one thing overlooked about the centaurs is that they take up 2 hexes on the battle field.. no other lvl 1s have this

3. Sprites (no retaliation +flying, comes 2nd on S maps)
4. Centaur captains (HP, speed)
5. Halberdiers. total HP.
6. Hobgoblins
7. Familiars ( collect mana)
8. Gnolls
9. Troglotydes. Slow, but weak.

Gnolls are better then you give them credit for. They're definitely better than imps and goblins. Best would be Sprites, because of flying/ no retaliation, which enables them to live longer then other lvl 1's.
Collecting mana doesn't help much when the whole stack dies in one hit.

150000 skelly will die after 5000 Sprites, not before. Master gremlins have a great influence in the game. Try to play a Tower-Conflux duell w/o lvl1 upgrades.

AI tends to ignore them. So they are useful in SP.

I am weighing them simply on their merits, not based on numbers. Sprites are faster, and no retaliation. Taken in-game, Skeletons have no equals.
