skeleton warriors. only for the numbers. plus they are pretty good. they have attack and defense stats larger than zombies  )

I say Skeletons and Skeleton Warriors. The best thing about them is obviously how many of them can you have, plus they have pretty decent stats and look cool.
On the second place, are upgraded Gremlins, I like the idea of 1 lvl shooter 
Third place goes for Pikemen and Halaberdiers, they are really good.

I find Skeletons to be the only 1st tier unit which is solid until late game, because of the number of them you can accumulate, I think I'd have to go with skeletons.

SKELETONS
Skeletons get large in numbers and have pretty good attack and def. for being the 1st level creature
BUT in the WOG expansion thing the Skeleton Magi are the best

A lot of people are saying Skeletons because of the numbers you can get from Necromancy, but to me that's saying the skill of Necromancy is good, not the creature. If you look at the numbers you get from the Necropolis alone I don't think people would say Skeletons are good. And obviously Necromancy would be better if it raised Centaurs instead of Skeletons.

Centaur Captains, Sprites and master gremlin. Pikemen are good but not that fast.

Sprites are by far the best one, followed by skeletons. Others are hard to place anywhere except imps suck.

It's a tossup between Centaur Captain and Halberdier for me.
While Centaur Captain has better speed, Halberdier is more durable and can deal out similar damage and excel against enemy flyers.
So I'll give them equal firsts.
=1 Halberdier
=1 Centaur Captain
3 Gnoll Marauder (they're more durable than you think)
4 Skeleton Warrior
5 Sprite
6 Master Gremlin (they shoot leads them to this position)
7 Hobgoblin
8 Infernal Troglodyte
9 Familiar

Every Necromancers favorite tools of war. Gathers en mass and are better than Zombies.

I really donīt like pixies because they die extremely quickly, but so do the other tier 1 units so i go for skeletons because they are good when big numbers
