I've played MM6 and MM7 countless times and I know every single corner of every dungoen and area in Erathia and especially Enroth.
I guess I can answer most questions, but you'll find the real veterans at these forums that I can recommend:
Rednecks MM6 Tavern
TELPs MM7 Tavern
Most technical problems related to WinXP can be fixed by unofficial patches (Mok´s Patch for MM6) and Mok´s patch for MM7). Or you can search for "My unofficial patch v1.3" if you want the patch for MM6.
If got another handful of very good links/tables if anyone wants them. But go to the forums, they're still very active.

I don't know if there is a best order to do things. In general, doing maps that are located closer together is a good order to do them. After Sorpigal, I go to Ironfist. From there, I go to Mist, Bootleg Bay, Mire of the damned, and Freehaven....not in any particular order.
Like sphere said, it's usually easier to clear the outside areas before entering dungeons. Almost every dungeon in the game will require you to leave and heal several times. You just have to kill as many as you can, and don't wait too long to run away to heal. Probably the most important thing in MM is to know how to run like hell. MM doesn't have easy stuff like full topes. So hit and run them.
The equivilent to making the zombies dance in HOMM is the ranged unit fighting retreat in MM. You don't have fodder in MM. You have to move away from them to give your ranged units room to work. Sometimes leaving the dungeon is the only safe place to go.
The order Sphere said is a good order to do the Ironfist dungeons. Shadow Guild (Das Versteck der Schattengilde), Temple of Baa, Dragoon's Cave. Personnaly I do the Temple before Shadow guild. It's a lot bigger and has room to run around and use fighting retreats. Then you can try Snergle's Cavern or maybe save it for later. If I remember right, you can't finish that one yet anyway (you need something first). Corlagons's Estate is another one that might be a good idea to wait on, but you can try.
Quote: found an entrance to a "dragon" dungeon (named similar). First there were 3 "halbadiers" or Guardians (not sure how they were named in english, coz i have the german version.
Are you talking about Silver Helm Outpost (Silberhelm Außenposten)? Wache, Aufseher, Hauptmann = Guard, Lieutenant, Captain in English version.
Quote: Not sure how u all got that much experience though. All my party members are Level 11 now.
When I use skill points, I always check if there is a trainer nearby so I can get to expert. Sorpigal has expert trainers for all elemental magic, and body, mind, spirit. You can get expert training for EVERY skill except light and dark magic at the 6 towns I listed in the first paragraph. Master training is not so easy. Expert level at 4 is always better than basic level at 6-7. Pick a weapon and the best armor your character can have. Put your skill points there and not weapons/armor you don't plan on specializing in. Example, if a character can wear plate armer, don't put points into leather.
I just finished Tample of Baa and I'm at level 9. I got these skills at Sorpigal and Ironfist:
1st Paladin has ex sword=5, ex bow=4, ex body magic=4, merchant=3, spirit magic=2, and {mind, shield, plate, repair, meditation all=1}
Archer has ex axe=4, ex bow=5, ex fire=4, ex chain=4, air=3, and {water, earth, leather, meditation all=1}
Druid has ex mind=4, ex body magic=4, ex leather=4, ex meditation=4, bow=2, and {staff, fire, air, water, earth, spirit, shield all=1}
2nd Palidan has ex sword=4, ex bow=4, ex body magic=4, plate=3, identify=3 (haven't found identify follower yet), disarm trap=2, and {spirit, mind, shield, meditation, perception all=1}
The spell scrolls disappear after you use them. Spell books are the only way to learn spells. (no scholars, mage guilds, etc) You find books for free, but usually have to buy them. Early game, offense spells are too weak and there's not enough spell points. I try to get healing/cure/remove spells, and buff spells first. Protection from xxx spells can also help early.
About meteor shower and TP. In general the early stores sell lower level spells. Also the spells are random and change over time, so check back at the stores after a while. I usually check followers and stores after leveling up to see what's new. Leveling up takes a long time if you haven't noticed.
No, you can't walk in turn based mode. You can in MM7 though, one step for each round. In 6, you need to get good at the keyboard commands.

Wow, I remember this game when it first came out. Was a very fun game to play, but I remember being able to "skip ahead" in the game. Once I had the meteor shower spell, I was able to defeat titans from a distance by striking and dodging the shots thrown at me. Once defeated I was able to get much greater rewards at such an early stage in the game. Hope you enjoy Dirk

I rechecked my party again, and they are all Level 6, not 11..
I did all stuff on Mist so far (not dungeons..just upper world) and same on Ironfist.
I learned some new stuff again today..
1. Always save before u open a chest. Even the ability "Trap" level 5 doesn´t help from getting killed. For sure after u killed about 50 of those Lizzard magics and Priests of Baa (or whatever they are named)
2. Always watch your steps! I wanted to heal all my party members from my first visit in the Temple of Baa, where i killed tons of spiders, spider monsters and giant spiders, coz i "touched" a skull pile, and got "cursed" somehow. But on my way from Baa to the healing temple in Ironfist, i walked over a teleporter and suddenly were surrounded by at least 50 enemies (Lizzards, Lizzard Magicians, White Magicians). I was dead in a bout 3 seconds. The whole fight in the Temple for nothing. These are things which annoy me like hell (similar to those "events" on many H3 custom maps, where your scouts get killed all the time, coz suddenly there is an ambush..)
3. If u´ve killed a good amount of enemies, be it on an island or a dungeon, u mostly find some kind of campfire with a pot there. There is food in it when u click on the pot. Most of the time i found 3 food.
4. You can use the advantage of the "Trading" ability after u have clicked on "buy" or "sell". I thought u have to chose and mark your "Trader" before u enter such houses, but no, u can see the different prices when u click on the pic of a different party member.
I guess i will start the game again now. With the experience i made, and the help i recieved here, i think i can make a better start and chose my abilities better.
Will keep u informed..

When I play MM6 I usually do the following:
1. Deliver letter in the Inn in NS, get Merchant for all members kill all goblins and mages (except those on the peninsulas to the east) and loot all chests (there is one "beneath" a rock NE of the temple)
2. Wait for wednesday and go to Ironfist (I always travel by horse if possible, walking takes too long time). Deliver letter for 5k gold. Get bow skill for all and buy the best bows available. Don't bother buying armor or other weapons. Kill some lizards/followers of Baa if you want to.
3. Go back to NS and train to level 3. Get expert air (above the bank, it can be done from a certain angle if you look up).
4. Do the goblin watch quest and the three quests in the abandoned temple. Kill remaining mages and goblins.
5. Train again.
From this point on the game becomes more loose. My main goal is to get Master of water magic for Town Portal. Depending on my party I may go to Mist and Bootleg Bay for promotions. I usually do the Shadow guild quest and the temple of baa and Dragoons caverns by now at castle Ironfist.
Then I'll go to Free Haven and Hire the gate master there. Go for fly and meteor shower.
WIth meteor shower and the starburst scroll found in Goblin Watch you can easily retrieve Lord Kilburn's shield. Capturing the prince of thieves is also an easy quest that'll earn you a lot of gold and XP. These two quests can be done at level 10 or even before.
I never bother to clear out Mire of the Damned or Bootleg Bay early on.

Hey,
- Hehe, I am really enjoying this thread and the game too ( of course ).
- "Where do u get those powerfull spells like Meteorshower or Townportal from? " - Well the best selection overall is in Freehaven, books and spells alike. Even trainers for expert and master can be found here. To get there, go past that monk ( of light ? ) temple in myst and you'll end up in Freehaven outskirts.. and you actually CAN.. jump over that large lake ( close to the goverment house in Freehaven )... well this is just one of many ways to ge there early in the game
- I dont really like "exploiting" ( DONT start about what is what and why hence my "......"   but as Ecoris said and I think I mentioned it before too, the shield quest can be taken early in the game for exp ( ALOT ) + gold. but you also get your first pala promotion for this.. so...
- Hehe, that portal has been giving me some grief in the past too, Angelito. But as you mentioned, "..all that temple of Baa killing for nothing..) I have made a habit out of saving everytime I stand still or rests/sleeps. That way you almost always ( if killed ) gets a second chance thats not days ago ( e.g. saves ).
- IF you desides to go after that shield ( Kriegspire - which is where I am now btw. ) get fly from Freehaven and expert air...you'll need telekinesis too. You might as well go the full mile and take out the chest in Mire of the damned.. and maybethe chest from the mino land ( can't remember the name of the town ) and if you pull it off, you'll have atleast 3-6 relics
- But I think, as binabik said take out Ironfist first, to get some seasons. Plus as you probbly know by now, theres golds aplenty ( + 1 gong ) in that MEGA temple. But again save-save- save is the keyword to survival.
- And when you get some more experience under your newbie wings you'll find that telekinesis is the way you open chests in the future to come
- Well I am off to try and get that shield and maybe some nice items from that chest too... I'll keep ya posted.

Before Sphere messes too much up I'll have to make a few things clear:
SPOILER WARNING
1. The easiest way to Free Haven early on is from Ironfist. Go the the upper left corner and face NW. Move forwards. You'll be offered to go to Free Haven. There's no need to go to Bootleg Bay first. You can't get there from the Misty Islands. You might be able to get to FH by boat.
2. The Shield quest is not the paladin promotion quest and it is done in Blackshire not in Kriegspire.
3. Telekinesis does not protect you from the chests' traps (unless you exploit a small bug).
While you may find relics/artifacts in some chests in Blackshire and Kriegspire (the mino land) it is unlikely. You'll be lucky to find as much as two. You may also want to mind the artifact cap.
As in many games saving often is very important. But remember that the autosave is updated whenever you go to antoher area/dungeon.

OK, as already stated, i started a new game and have chosen the skills and their levels more "wisely" that time.
My party consists of a Paladin, an Archer, a Druid and a Wizard.
They are all Level 10 now and all have abilitiy Bow.
Paladin is expert in Sword, Shield, Spirituell Magic and Chain-Armorer
Archer is expert in Bow, Axe, 6th sense, Trap
Druid and Wizard (don´t which of them has what skill though, that´s why i write them all...) are expert in Identify, Water, Body Magic (?), Leather, Fire, Bow....
Tempel of Baa cleared at latest (all other things in Scorpigal or Ironfist done...except Dragoner caves). The throng of Skeletons were nice to kill when i entered the altar...
I have 2 followers, 1 of them raises merchant skill for every member by 8, the other is able to cast "Town Portal" once a day, which also helps a lot.
Some more questions:
- What is the thing about the sword in the stone? Do i need it for a quest, or is it just a very good weapon (for the Paladin)?
- Where do i get the spells Townportal, Meteorshower, Waterwalk from? Couldn´t find them anywhere yet.
- I currently have 33.000 gold. Should i deposit it in the bank or do i need to have it "on a hero" to be able to pay spells for example?
Next goal i have is to clean out Mist. Is that a good idea, or should i go to different places first? (The guy in my party who can cast Townportal could bring me to many different places already....)

Does anyone know how luck works? It just says it has a subtle influence throughout the game. What does that mean?
I'm at level 42 now and have a total of 26 skills at master and 15 at expert. The party of 2 paladins, 1 druid and 1 archer seems to be working out pretty good. I've been jumping around a lot instead of completely clearing a map, including dungeons, like I usually do. I managed to clear Ethric's tomb at level 14, that wasn't easy.
I just flew to Castle Kriegspire to get master bow for 3 characters. I landed on the balcony and all the minotaurs gathered below me, but couldn't attack. I cast fire ring until I ran out of spells points. It did enough damage to fly down and finish them in melee combat.
@Angelito: The swords in the stone aren't important. Most are only medium level weapons. There's one exception, one of them is a relic, but I won't spoil it by telling you which one.
All the spells you listed can be bought at Freehaven or Silver Cove. The spells they sell change over time, so keep checking back. I got meteor shower very early, but took a long time before I got TP.
You have to have the gold on you to buy anything.
Mist is pretty easy, so you can clear it early for gold and XP. There's also some easy quests there which gives you more gold and XP.
Once you have easy maps like Mist cleared, you can visit the shrine for +10 to one of your stats. If you visit a shrine more than once, you only get +3 each time after the first. You have to visit the Seer in Ironfist first for it to work. You don't have to visit the shrine he says, you just have to visit a shrine in the right month. Like if you visit the Seer in December, he'll say it's the month of magic resistance. But if you wait until February, you can visit the shrine in Mist which gives +10 intellect. Once you visit a shrine, you have to go to the Seer again before you can visit another shrine. Lloyd's Beacon and TP come in very handy for doing this.
A word about your party. I would strongly recommend getting expert body magic for your Paladin. Spirit magic is good for the buff spells Bless and Heroism. And it's good for Remove Curse. But if your Druid gets knocked out, you really want a second healer. Also, you should get expert/master Meditation for all your spell casters.

I have looked up my party again, and i don´t have a wizard as 4th, but a cleric. I went back to ironfist and gave Meditation to all my casters, and also Repair to one. I waterwalked (scroll) from Sorpical to the very east, coz i read there is a house where u can get Expert Water, which i have now. I´m currently doing the Dragooner Caves and then i will jump to Free Haven to look up for those mighty spells.
You are level 42 with all your guys? Where do u get that much exp.points? As stated...i am Level 11..

Well, you might say I've been spending a lot of time playing the game. At level 42 I have about 870000 XP. If I had been playing instead of hanging out at HC tonight, I'd probably be at level 50.

Hey,
- Hehe, ease up will ya Ecoris, I think I mentioned it was around 7-8 years since I played it last, so all was taken from what I could remember but your right I "messed" up a few things.
1) the shield aint the 1 pala promotion... I forgot about the Lady in distress.
2) telekinesis DOES open chests, but what I really meant was that you can do it from a fair distance and a fast TAB then you might not kill the toon doing it.. or not at all.. I still stand by this.
- 1 small example : * small spoiler* fly to the cliffs in Blackshire, kill the werewolves stacking up around the chest, get the deck ( if you want ) use the tele on the chest... some will prolly die, but you DO open the chest ! and I have NEVER used cheats in this game.. what s the point in it really. then if you still have a full team.. get some mana from the well.. and fly up there again. then fly/climb up the hill from where you are.. and you have 2 chests in sight which DOEShave the amount of relics I spoke of. I just did it without 3. Telekinesis does not protect you from the chests' traps (unless you exploit a small bug).
.. so I still stand by my statement. well enough of this.
- There ARE several ways to get to FreeHaven, besides the one you mention.
- @ Angelito Remember that there are more toons you could have put in your party.. and all of those ALSO can get a promotion..hance ALOT of exp. + gold FreeHaven offers also many quests... and if Binabik has taken Elrich tomb at 14 ( grats on that matey ) there IS a way.... like you mentioned before.. "non-linear game-play"
- I am lvl 20 now ( all 4 ) and still having problems at the "dagger" quest for the merchant in FreeHaven..

Ah, Might and Magic VI, a game that I play once every two years or so. And now you guys made me wanting to play it now again...and just a year passed!
EDIT: Btw, here's one help for start of the game. It's exploit actually, so use if you want. In New Sorpigal, have all the money put in bank, then click on left bank wall (not sure where exactly, so prolly more clicking needed) until you get fly scroll. Then go to Buccaneers Guild (?) and fly over it's right door. There click on building. You'll get transfered to one happy place with around 100 or so dragons that don't particulary like you. But if you're quick, get in that small shrine, and click on obelisk with all your characters. +20 for all stats. You'll die soon though. Might not be enough to click with all the chars, so loading autosave will prolly happen.
As said, exploit, so do it if you think it's right. :-)

Ahh the good old MM6 & MM7... Probably the best games outside still. I love them. You can always find something new in these worlds.
== MM6 SPOILER WARNING ==
Hmm a year ago i played my last MM6 game, but ok, i'll try it:
- Angelito: You said, you gave your Paladin expert chain. Note that paladins and warriors can learn up to plate armor, clerics and archers up to chain armor, and druids and sorcerors leather armor only.
- Always play with 4 different classes. It suits the game better, i think... (4 druids is still fun tough)
- Spellbooks... in MM6, with a trick, you can easy ninja the Inferno book and one highlvlbook from Free Haven guild the first days... but it really destroys the game, don't do that. You also shouldn't visit the shrine of the goods / NWC the first day. You will just own everything the first levels, no fun at all.
The last 3 spells of each elemental and spiritual tree (fire, air, water, earth, spirit, mind, body) you can ONLY buy in Free Haven, or you are a lucky beast and find it in a chest.
- The townportal follower is ok. But he is very very expensive (takes 20% gold i guess) and costs you 2000 gold instant to hire. A very high price, you will learn town portal anyway. The same with the flyfollower.
- In MM6 Light & Dark magic are way too overrated, the spells are just too expensive. Paralyze costs like what 60 mana per try? or 80? Dragon breath for 100 mana? yay! You will visit the temple very often then, i guess.
== SPOILER END ==
I just have to say it. Pray to god, that you won't see Castle Darkmoore soon - You'll love it.
I'm happy to still see new people playing this fantastic game. Don't give up early, you'll improve fast in this game.
If you have finished MM6 and you are still happy with this game, buy MM7, you'll really love it!
Regards,

Decided to install again...and problems came.
First, install went through nicely, as well as patching the game - first to 1.2, then to Mok's 1.3 patch. Started game, all went well. Now first problem, clicked on magic scroll, game crashed, and system restarted, also noticed what might be 'blue screen of death' - some words and numbers on blue background, dunno what for sure, as it was up for a split second before comp rebooted. Then seen that haven't changed compatibility. Did that now, to 98/Millenium, and started again. And sure, no problems now.
Played a bit more, and now when clicking on bottles, same thing happens. Anyone could share a bit of help with this?

I discovered something I said wrong earlier. Not all spell scrolls disappear after using them. Healing scrolls can be used over and over. Resurrection can be reused also, so I assume stone-to-flesh, remove curse, etc can also be reused. I wish I had known that several games ago, it would have made things easier when I was out of spell points.
I'm at level 63 now and slowly killing dragons at Dragonsand. I get tired of them breaking all my arts. I should hire a temporary follower to fix items so I don't have to constantly pass things to my repair specialist. Just fighting one dragon I probably get 15-20 items broken.
Regarding installation problems, does anyone know if the install program is different with the single game or the compilations? I don't mean the game executable, but the install program itself. I use Millennium edition. MM6&7 run fine, but I've never been able to get MM4&5 to run right. They run, but are so jerky, it's not playable. I also have MM 1-6 Special Edition, but haven't tried it yet.

I'll give you guys a handy tip to use with the arena.
Lure all the monsters to you, use jump spell and go onto the stairs... and then spam ring of fire ... they have no hope... unless... there's that metal ball which shoots laser beams at you and one hit kills you... just kill that one first via hit and run and press A when u get near it ...
