Let's say "Base_Damage" is Stack_Size*random(min_dmg, max_dmg)
Then you have to apply all the modifiers multiplicatively:
Base_Damage / (1+0.05(70-A)) * 0.7
The last 0.7 is the hero Expert Defense modifier: -30% damage translates into damage *0.7. It works the same with the Attack bonus of the attacking hero, Archery (*1.2), Evasion (*0.8), Deflect Missile, range/melee penalty (*0.5), walls penalty in siege (*0.5)...
Note that there is no cap to the 0.05*(A-D) modifier, as was incorrectly stated in earlier versions of the manual.
@Stella: the town specializations are indeed one of the many innovations in H5.

Do you mean for the damage calculation the difference between A and D is not capped at 30 points?

Yes, that's what I mean. For example, I tested with A-D=100, or D-A=130, which respectively gave *6 and /7.5 multipliers.

Great job to all involved. I am really glad all that info was gathered in one big manual.

You should read it about a million times. Most of its writings are from my many posts throughout the many years I have been troubleshooting the whole series of HoMM.

I just had a question....I recently bought HOMM5 for the Mac, and I just had a couple of questions....1. in the marketplace when exchanging one resource for another....what is the command/control to execute the exchange? 2. The only Campaigns that come up are the Haven Campaign (isabel)?...any ideas? 3. Are the patches and maps for download at the site for us Mac Gamers too?
Thanks so much!

No idea what's the difference from 'normal' H5 but once you get in the marketplace there is a button at the down right corner. I think spacebar works too.
Yes you must unlock the campaigns in the right order so if you find the haven one boring have faith that the others are better It's a tutorial campaign.
No idea about patches and mac

nice manual, although I noticed a few things that are missing and would be great to have there for reference:
- vault-locations like Pyramids: there should be note about the one-month reset and which of them reset and which not.
- Refugee camp: should be stated that the units that can be recruited here can be either upgraded or not upgraded, while all set buildings only offer non-upgraded units.
- Military Posts: should be noted that these buildings are guarded by 4/3/2/1 creatures of tier 4/5/6/7, non upgraded. And that they can offer the same amount of creatures per week, or only one or two types.
- in general, many map locations only have the basic ingame descriptions, but some comments would be helpful.
Also, I recently noticed that Tattered Flags sometimes also give luck in addition to morale. Pretty much all the time, actually.

Actually, except Military Post garrison, all of your suggestions are already in the 3.0 manual that will come out when the game is released.
Thanks for the suggestions, that's how I know we're on the right track.

Actually, exactly all the time.
Other such locations have a more complex mechanics. Everything will be detailed in map locations comments in the next release.

I think a Military Post can offer 1, 2, 3 or 4 different creatures. That's up to the mapmaker.

I've seen them offering different selections of creatures when restarting a map (for example the final dwarfen mission), which would make this random by default, but it can also be defined by the mapmaker. Like in the 4th HoF Haven mission (I think it was that one, at least) where the various posts on the map always offer angels.
Guards are always the same, though.

Exactly. That's my experience as well.
If you have other comments to suggest, please do. There's so much to test that I'm sure there are a lot of details that could still be added.

actually, there is something I'm curious about... are there any more precise informations for Rolfs speciality Golden Tongue?
I'm hoping he'll get his own scenario like Tolghar in TotE. I'd love to try out his speciality, but he doesn't seem to be playable at all

Indeed, some details are needed here. For joining neutrals, he gets a 0.1 bonus somewhere in the Diplomacy calculation (I'm guessing that's +10% in Chance_To_Join - see the Adv. Mechanics section about Diplomacy). I don't know yet what gold and resources he gathers from victories.
Sadly, he's not playable, as you point out. Unless you use a mod to allow campaign heroes, or you just mod the map you want to play with him (maybe try Iron Throne with him instead of Tolghar), or use a fan-made map with him...

About Rolf's Golden Tongue ability I would also like to see some detailed facts . I played with him on some maps, and that "neutral creatures tend to join more often" thing is quite imppresive! I haven't seen such "mass joining frenzy" since... well the only thing that comes to my mind now it's Markal .
Anyway, about the Manual... it's amazing!!! I've just printed it and browsed it a little, and I already found stuff I had no idea about ! The town "abilities" depending on the town's name is one of them... Not to mention the whole design and appearance of the manual. Great job and another thanks to all those who worked a lot to create it!

This is my first time posting here so excellent job on the manual! I absolutely love it and it has been really helpful. I am not sure if this question has been posed here but would it be possible if the creature section did not just include the statistics? In addition, how about providing the description as given in the game? I believe the descriptions are in the Age of Heroes website itself but it would definitely complete the creature section (in my opinion).

The creatures section is meant to provide a strategic reference chart, that can be quickly looked at, and allow easy comparison between creatures (especially in ToE comparing the 2 upgrades). The problem with descriptions is that they wouldn't fit in the page. Maybe they could be added separately (in the following pages). I'll try and see how it looks. If anyone else has an opinion on how interesting (or not) it would be to add them, let me know.
By the way, the ToE 3.0 manuals are already available in english, french, spanish, german, russian and (even if a little shorter) italian.

It appears that Ubisoft have included it in the retail version of Tribes of the East. It's also credited at the back of the official manual.

Yes, it is.
We have been discussing with them a long time to get that done, as we all thought it would be a nice addition to the game package. That's also the reason it's already updated, since they needed it for the gold master.
All in all, we are very proud of having the manual included there, and it goes with Ubisoft supporting the community in return, so it's a win-win situation. I hope it will allow more people to have access to the manual, and ultimately find their way here when they need support or have ideas to share.

I applaud this excellent piece of work and everybody who had worked so very hard behind it. Like everybody else, I was very disappointed to find only a general manual in the original H5, never knew anything about skillwheel etc and kept guessing throughout the game. My search took me to this community, and what an excellent community this proved to be. It stands out beyond anybody's expectation and lives up to its high reputation.
