You can cast it on any non-living unit including hydras. You possibly tried to drain an elemental/undead/mechanical unit or the target unit had vampirism on it.

Ah...that is it...
The creatures were living (ingvar controlled dwarven TANKS..ug) but they ALSO had vampirism on them.
Makes sense that vamps can't drain from vamps. Strangely enough, I hadn't seen that before...now I know.

Help...
Hey i`m new here
i have noticed that almost in every map,
after you find the tear of asha and you bring it to the castle the game ends...
and i want a map that after you find the Tear of asha the game will still continue
so can someone please send me a map just as i want it..??

This is all from the top of my head so it may not be 100% accurate but you should handle I hope:
First of all download the original maps here and put them in the Maps folder. Then open the map you want with the editor, go to View -> Map Properties Tree. On the left window search for "Objectives" and expand it (click the "+"). Then expand Primary, Common and make sure you delete any objective with the Kind property set to "OBJECTIVE_KIND_BUILD_GRAAL".

Patches problems
Hi. I Cant download any patch to Heroes 5. Allworks fine till i come to instal it to the game. It keep says *Heroes of might and magic is not instaled and the patch cannot appeal* Plz help me.I have verison 1.0 and trying to download 1.01

So did you not try a different version? Say Us if you are from usa, pl for Poland etc. Either way try installing 1.4 as it includes all the changes since 1.0.

Question: I have been gone for a good clip, six months or more. I have basically spent five hours going through all the factions "FAQs" if you will (strategy threads), and I cannot find any threads dedicated to the alternative upgrades that ToE offers. I found the "renegade" thread for Haven, but that's outdated.
Or does such a thread exist? I donno, I've been looking through the "Secrets of Destruction" thread, and that's 55 pages long, and I didn't see much discussion beyond the scout upgrade (the invisible ones). It's been rather frustrating.

I did. I missed that option. See, I was looking for a thread that takes the one you linked to into consideration, but not just for the units alone, but also, heroes and spells like the faction specific topics do.

You are right there is more to it. Still have your read the thread or you are commenting only on the masterpost? If not tell me which faction interests you and I will explain a few things. I think there were some good points in Mytical's stronghold analysis about orc upgrades btw.

Let's assume that I hadn't played Heroes 5 since it came out (because I have). If I wanted to pick up Dungeon from scratch, any of the threads are from 2006...four years ago, and we have undergone many patches and whatnot. So I was thinking of playing that one tiny multiplayer map to experiment with some factions (other than Necro). Besides my common HoMM knowledge (playing from King's Bounty onward), I find it difficult to figure out how to play the best game possible with a given faction with the most recent information. That's all. That's why it's taken me so long to navigate all that stuff. but the thread you provided is an excellent "creature update" thread. I think it should be bumped up on the Table of Contents.

I already had multiplayer experience and watched hundreds of replays - not counting mine - so it kinda came naturally. If you check some of the duel map's replays or the random duels thread you can learn a lot. Still that's no substitute for experience, I suggest that you try playing some games on the duel map, The random duels thread is a good place to start, you should not have much trouble finding opponents.
