Hey guys, I recently just got a new computer Windows 7 with some pretty snazzy specs. I have no lag playing H5 now, but there's a strange bug that keeps popping up in the middle of my games.
What happens is that sometimes, when I go back to the adventure map after exiting from a castle screen, the graphics automatically "reverts" to the ugliest, lowest setting available. When I go and look at the video options, my graphic detail is still set to high, and nothing else has changed. Sometimes if I simply click "apply" the game goes back to normal, but most of the time it doesn't work.
Another similar issue is the scrolling speed on the adventure map. It seems like every time I exit the entire game, it "reverts" my scrolling speed to the default, but retaining the other settings I made.
What could be causing this? I didn't have this problem with my old XP comp, except for the mouse scrolling one but I didn't think it was really that bothersome. But the in-game graphical interruptions are annoying as hell.

Oh sorry I forgot about the system specs. I have DirectX 11 and my display device is NVIDIA GeForce GT 220. I don't really know anything about drivers... what about my drivers do you want to know? Sorry I'm a bit of a computer illiterate, lol.

Oh no problem, it isn't a big deal. I know that installing the directx that came on the game cd fixes it if the game will not start. Sounds like your game starts fine but it can't hurt to install the directx9 from the game cd.
A long time ago I found a fix for your issue and posted it on the ubisoft forum but I can't remember it now. It required changing a setting in one of the config files. My instrcutions are probably still there on the ubisoft heroes v technical forum.

I followed the instructions and found the user_a2.cfg in my Heroes V TotE default_profiles folder, but I can't open it... Apparently I do not have the program to edit .cfg files or something. Do I have to download some program to make it work in order to make my heroes V work?

You are on the right track. You should be able to open the .cfg file by selecting a text editor like notepad. I usually make a backup copy of the original file if I'm going to be changing values.
If I remember the issue right there was a line specifically about nvidia cards...there was a line that referenced setvar_nv...If you don't fix it let me know and I'll look through my ubi account for the post.
If you want to search over there I am phoenixreborn06 (I think).

Bummer... I was able to open it with notepad and change the value from 0 to 1, but it won't let me save. Same thing with wordpad. All it said was "Access is denied" and then I have to close without saving... Ugh.

Oops sorry. I left out an important detail. It may be because it is read only. If you right click->properties on the file you need to un-check read only. Jac this is fixable so let's keep working on it.

If anyone is still looking this is the line:
setvar gfx_fix_nv_np2_hack = 1
The original profile = 0, so change it to = 1.
That "enables nvidia older drivers".
That was for HV original, I didn't check HoF but I bet it's the same line. Will someone let me know if it works?
edit: the place where you change it is mydocuments/mygames/profilename/usera2.cfg
This line still exists in my H5 Tribes. Maybe that will work?

Ok I finally managed to save the file with setvar gfx_texture_mip = 1. I've some work to do now so I'll try and see if this works in a few hours. Thanks for being patient with me Phoenix.

No need to do any of those physical file changes
Here's the direct X latest package of video rendering files for forcing your game to run in perfect harmony with the latest drivers of your newest PC: Direct access to the download page for DirectX-SDK(August 2009)
This is the 'ensemble' of files used by Developers for making low-key type of 3D strategy games, just like HoMM5: Tribes of the East v3.0 + patch 3.1 + Mods. It has all of the DirectX 9.0c upto 9.0d.x of very advanced, cartoony like 3d rendering of graphic's quality.
Note: It has to be installed before the game's initial installation.
Here's: the proper way of doing it:
Download the file directly to the Desktop of you PC's main window.
Run self unpacker and self wizard of an installer. It will create it's own Folder in the Programs Directory.
Uninstall your previous installation of HoMM5:X
Use a registry cleaner to make sure there is no invalid installation keys left unchanged(happens a lot with these glitchy uninstallers of today).
Re-install HoMM5:X plus all patches(remember to start patching at 1.4 for the original version of the game). Do not start the game before finishing the patching process.
Use the Disk C: Cleaner of all trashy files unneeded by your PC as this time on.
Defragment C: Drive thoroughly. There. all done.
Now, fully ready to launch the latest instalment of HoMM.
PS: All of this seems quite long and tedious but, on today's really fast machines, will take a large 15 minutes up to 30 minutes max.
Have a very good time HoMM5 and all of its expansions throughout the New Year of 2010! BTW: Happy New-Year H.C.!

I just ran into this same problem, and it took me a while and a fair amount of searching to find out what had happened. What I noticed was the shadow dragon with 3000 HP and lots of damage. There was also an effect on the various artifact merchants -- not offering as many items, and charging higher prices.
I think I found the culprit. It was a map with a zip file called firstmap_eng_333.zip, and with the game name of Marriage of Discord. The map is a complicated scenario -- and IMO, is seriously flawed in many ways. It is badly unbalanced, and there was one spot with a persistent crash whenever an opposing hero tried to pass over a certain spot.
After I got rid of the file "firstmap_eng_333.h5m", the shadow dragons went back to normal 200 HP.
What is even more strange is that this particular map did not have any shadow dragons in it, at least not any that I ran into during play.

I too had this trouble. Here is how I got the Staff of the Netherworld to work for Ziyad (I haven't taken it to another town yet):
1. I captured the town and watched the cinematic about the staff.
2. I equipped the staff.
3. My hero took one step away from the town; then turned around and reentered it.
4. I hit Escape to exit the town screen, and I got the message asking me if I wanted to curse the town (cost $10,000).

help
i have a problem too - does someone have an idea how the attack and defence actually work - 6 points difference(atk-def) increase the dmg by 27.5% ( 4.75% dmg per point)and 24 points difference (again atk-def) increase it by 117%( 4.895% per point)
when the defence is higher - the percents are between 2.30 and 2.80 per point
so do u know the formula/algorithm & how the terrain effects the values?
it will be a great help for me

I'm pretty sure this is in the fan manual. You can get that in your fandocuments folder. program files -> ubisoft ->heroes v tribes->fandocuments///or something like that.
