What languages do/did you have to learn at school
This is just out of curiosity, I live in the Netherlands and appart from our native language, Dutch, we have to learn: English, German, French and if choose so we can also learn Spanish I think this is too much so I made this thread to compare it to different countries.

I live in Hungary and we have many choices about learning languages. Firstly you can choose between German and English. You learn it for 8 years than you CAN choose a second language: English/German (not your primary), French or Spanish. Some of the schools teach Russian and Latin as well, but they are both third languages, you have to study the previous 2 before them. Even the second language is optional, so there aren't much people studying the third.
As for me, I've taken up English as primary, and Spanish as secondory language. I don't plan to take up any third at all.

I learnt German for 6 years, loved it
Can't remember much now though :|
At the school I taught at last year the kid's learnt Italian or Japanese
I am a strong advocate of learning languages other than English... I really need to practise what I preach...

French. Could speak and understand it spoken ok, but reading and writing were beyond me. Forgot most of it. Now I just know a few phrases in it, spanish, and latin (don't know if it is ancient or 'modern' latin to be honest). Also know how to say I don't speak German in German.

It all varies here, depending on school and the primary subject focus. Me, for 10 years I've been studying French, though I swapped A level with B level this year, stopped studying Russian which I studied for 4 years and took up English classes so I can get to the state exam.
Of course, I also have this lithuanian language that I am forced to study...

Since I started going to school in Ukraine and finished it in Israel the languages I've learnt in schools are:
Russian, Ukranian, English, Hebrew, Arabic.
Of course, I've totally forgotten Ukranian and Arabic by now because I never use them.

I grew up with English video games and subbed television series. I think that really helped in learning English Hence I dispise the way more and more TV shows are dubbed and the like...
Aside from Dutch and English, we had French and German. I sucked at the latter two though.

Latin is pretty easy. I recomend the series "Ecce Romani!" Its a course of latin books that makes it easy and fun to learn, in an understandable format, with lots of charts at the end.

Well, in the elementary school that I went to, English and French were mandatory. High school was the same, but there were also some Spanish classes you could take as an option, but I didn't take them. Pretty much everywhere in Quebec it's like this, unless you go to a completely french school. And now that I'm in college, there's quite a few different language classes. I know there's German, Spanish and I think there might be Chinese too, but that one I'm kind of if-y on.
