I dont really think the Dwarves are defensive, sure, they're slow and tough, but they have two ranged units, a 'flying' unit and a mounted unit, and I just can't see that as defensive.
For third tier though, they ought to replace Brawlers (fisticuffs) with Berserkers (axes).

I meant that in a cultural context - you are far more likely to see an Orc brawling or battleraging for his country than a Dwarf. They're more subdued and isolationist than any other faction so far.

Vikings battleraged, Dwarves not so much imo. In that light you can wonder what human berserkers seek in a dwarven faction...
Also, who says the lineup NEEDS a fast creature? It would only add to diversity and force people to think up suitable strategies if it lacked fast creatures.
If anything I find trolls suiting better with a dwarf faction. Unless you twist the theme into a full Viking / Norse themed faction, Berserkers have no place in it.

Actually, Vikings were traders as much as warriors, and in fact, their trading routes went as far as the Black and Caspian Seas, so while they were noted for their raiding, such escapades were probably over-represented, in comparison to sustained expansion (Similar to how the Romans expanded).

An interesting point, and this is almost certainly the best race to use that diversity.

Opinions would differ on this one. Trolls were originally the norse version of giants, not exactly cruel or barbaric, but simplistic and ugly (presumably a bit like the 'flatheads' in Jean M Auel's 'Earth Children' series), which probably puts them closer to Troglodytes than Dwarves.

...just wanted to say that trolls can't go with dwarfs, just can't...
U can search fantasy books, games, movies or whatever myths and will never find dwarves & trolls same faction...

I think its good to create something new. I think trolls fit with dwarfs.¨
And also i dont understand why it MUST be exact the same creature line-up (lvl4 caster, lv6 flyer/teleporter etc) like in H5...¨'
When i think of a dwarf faction i think of a slow but defensive faction and with many monsters from mythology or that they are very technology-based (Warcraft style).
And do you really want the hero to ride an elephant with hair? -.-

Trolls and dwarfs are the enemies from the beggining... They cannot have the same purpose and factions...
KOBOLD is from mythology and is half-god to dwarfs I think that he suits one of the slots best...
About that hairy elephant- go and make another geometrics for them if you think it is bad...

Elves and Dwarves are "enemies from the beginning", but look at Heroes I-III.

Well, do be aware that the idea of this project for me was not so much to make an entirely new Dwarven Fortress, but rather to see, what should the Fortress have been like to make people happy. Hence, I try to stick to the concepts of the current one that I like, and swap the ones that are less well conceived.

So why cannot you be creative and make a new thing?
Make trolls and dwarfs friends.
Thats the whole point when making a new game, to create something new that has never been seen before.
Well, the heroes could ride Bears (its better then hairy elephants -.-) or maybe even Boars, which i think fits or Wolfs or Rams.

Boars or Rams are good, especially Rams, because of the terrain.

Yes but it is not copyrighted since they didnt create rams and rams would be a obvious choice for an mountain faction.

Actually, I don't think Elves (in the Tolkien sense, because the Irish Myth Elves are enemies of 'everyone') and Dwarves have ever really been enemies, just very uneasy allies, something like the English and the Dutch, ie, they squabble a lot, but generally agree on the big issues.

good stuff good stuff

Anyhow. One question is if the discuession is for improve/perfect Dwarf town of H5, or whats possible for H6? But anyhow.. still a fun forum activity.
I still don't like Fire Dragon, or Dwarf association with it. yes, it is speak in the Lore, but the lore changes (or could change).
In all cases, here are some abilites of my previous line up. You might not agree with it, but oh well, that is just my personal choices
1. Miner/Defender
Miner
Mine: Provide extra resources every week
Defender
Armor
Large Shield
Shield Wall
-----
2. Axe Thrower/ Hammer Thrower

5. Rune Priest/ Rune Patriarch
Rune Priest
Caster, Shooter
Rune of Defense: Increase X Def of target allie crature within 5 squares for 3 turn (only cost half of turn to use)
Rune Patriarch
Caster, Shooter
Rune of War: Increase X Attk/Damage of target allie crature within 5 squares for 3 turn (only cost half of turn to use)
-----
6. Mountain Giant/ Frost Giant

-----
7. War Maiden / Valkyrie
War Maiden
Large Creature
Teleport
Storm Stirke
Valkyrie

Storm Strike
Fury: Attack increase for every dead allies.
Essentally very tank heavy faction. Lots slow, but good def unit. Usually battle would have it where try to use the Hammer thrower and spell to stunt/slow enemy archer, while up the Def of Ram/Berserker/Defender/Giant so they survie to where they can start doing damages.
