Reptiles, duhr.
@ Cepheus: Damn, you beat me to flashing the AOM example AOM is in fact my basis for suggesting Trolls with a dwarf faction (as well the ranged orientation concept).

+QP to Moonlith.
Also: Here's a thought on the nature of runes: How about being able to combine special runes together, like recepies, that compound eachother. Eg, having (fake runes) Rune of Speed and Rune of the Beasts leads to Rune of the Mountain Hawk.
Rune of Speed = Well...duh.
Rune of Beasts = Increases a random stat (attack, speed, damage, or hit points)
Rune of the Mountain Hawk = Gives Flying.
Since that could easily be imba, perhaps it should be something that becomes available that one would have to "purchase" like the other runes.
There shouldn't be combinations for every two runes, just a set amount that take 2 to 4 to form.
Should there be an "Ultimate Rune" or is that overdoing it? I think so, but it would be fun.

I think actually for me it's about time to round down this project. I've pretty much learned what I wanted to learn - realizing once again that we will never reach a common agreement - but also reaching the point where I would favor this following line-up, which I think covers nicely both the Ice and Fire nature of this faction, and which goes well with the Viking theme:
Level 1: Defender / Shieldguard
Level 2: Hammer Thrower / Axe Thrower
Level 3: Brawler / Berserker
Level 4: Black Bear / Polar Bear
Level 5: Rune Priest / Rune Patriarch
Level 6: War Maiden / Valkyrie
Level 7: Fire Dragon / Magma Dragon
Why have I chosen these creatures from all those suggested? Well, first of all, it does give a fairly balanced line-up in terms of creature types (shooters, flyers, tanks) while also holding the special properties of this Fortress faction (particularly the tanky level 7). I know there has been suggestion that this faction does not need fast units, because it should be hyper defensive, but I don't favor tha approach, as I think it will make it a pain to play. A faction that can't creep properly is little good.
Secondly, it offers a pretty homogenous line-up in terms of thematics. The dwarven units (of which there are 4) are coherent with the mythological apects of this faction and blend well with the viking theme. The remaining three units likewise fit well within these frames.
This is not saying that further discussion on this topic cannot take place, and I might change my mind if good suggestions were brought up - this for me, however, offers a both solid and consistent line-up.

"also holding the special properties of this Fortress faction ."
Dwarf Fortrss has only appeared one time....
Most vikings were farmers who wanted to earn some money.
Most Vikings didnt plunder vikings, it was rather rare, but they were great traders.

Its a good line up.
(Well.. could have Fire Giant/Magma Giant for lv 7, but that is just me who don't like too much Dragon
However... What about their Alternative Upgrades?
Or going even further.. Alternative Crature and its upgrade? (sorta like H4.. see old thread )
Just more to consider and play with... enjoy

I'd just like to ask how exactly in terms of lore a Black Bear could possibly turn into a white Polar Bear on upgrading.

In game world, most things are not logical. but could "BS" it somehow...
-Dye the Bear?
-Upgrade doesn't necessary mean change the creature, but rather how that unit operates. Thus much like how a driver is "upgraded" from driving a jeep to a tank, the Black Bear rider simply change to a bigger, more aggressive, and whiter mount.

Yes, that's what I was talking about (maybe just a little wider in the shoulders to give him a 'huge rock' look).

Level 7: Fire Dragon / Magma Dragon
However... What about their Alternative Upgrades?
I didn't really adress the subject of alternative upgrades here - I think most of them are pretty trivial - like Defender -> Shieldguard / Mountain Guard, Brawler -> Berserker / Battle Rager, Rune Priest -> Rune Patriarch / Rune Keeper, and Fire Dragon -> Magma Dragon / Lava Dragon. As for the Bear upgrades, one can argue upgrading is a bit more tricky - either stick with the colour changes, or simply give them new equipment, and about the Valkyrie ... eh, don't know. Either way, I think that's mostly a question of inventing names - at least until we start discussing unit abilities.

My choice would be.
Level 1: Miner / Tunneler ~ digs bolt-holes for other units (+50% defence vs. ranged attacks)
Level 2: Brawler / Beserker ~ self explanatory
Level 3: Warrior / Axe Hurler ~ self explanatory
Level 4: Defender / Huskarl ~ tanker unit
Level 5: Rune Priest / Rune Patriarch ~ self explanatory
Level 6: Giant / Thane ~ tanker unit (wearing bearskin)
Level 7: Fire Dragon / Magma Dragon

Hehe, that's what we are trying not to do.
This project has started in a goal to create a Dwarven faction which has more variety, and not many Dwarves which are very similar to each other. We would like to add more beast creatures or legendary creatures, that will make the lineup to a bit more intresting. Your suggestion keeps what we have already, 5 Dwarven units, a Giant and a Dragon. What we are looking for is a faction of only a small amount of Dwarven units.

But that's the whole Problem isn't it, that the dwarves were never big on domestication, which would reduce the number of animal units we could put in.

Quote: A Chimera with the Dwarves maybe?
A chaotic, evil, semi-tropical creature in a town of otherwise orderly, neutral, arctic beings, I don't see that really fitting.
What creatures do we have that would even live in the same terrain as the dwarves? Dragons, wolves, bears, some eagles, some of the bigger deer maybe. Now, which of those fits in with the dwarf culture (deep underground, industrious)?
