Personally ...
I would as a rule take cash over xp.. reason.. cash buys monsters.. monsters win fights... fights give experience.. seems about right
however in some cases you can look over map first and notice that there is more than ample gold on the map. In which case if my main hero needs a little "boost" here and there sure grab a couple 1500xp boxs for him.. and the one other xp over gold case. those DAMNABLE evil scholars..

Money, money, money
I LOVE money. If I love anything more than money, it's money. ;-)
I love nagas as well. Naga queens. But I'd go for the cash for I start at expert ot impossible level and it is needed to build the capitol. And have more money. ;-)

You would take the money??? Why do I always play in a different way that all of you? There isn't any aspect in which I agree so far! I always get the experience. Even if someone threatened me with a gun I wouldn't take the money!
When your hero is at a low level, one or two chests should be enough for him to make a new level. So you can have some very useful skills at the beginning of the game. Later I will also choose experience because it's right that you gain experience by fighting but if you add the experience from the chests, that means more experience => quicker level-making. And it's not only the skills. With each level you gain one point of a primary skill. Don't you think that with high stats acquired by chests you can beat the monsters easier?
And there are other ways of making money.

I actually agree with wyvern to a point, but usually, if my main is going to run over a chest on his path, I'll take it with him, and take some XP, especially early. But if its out of the way, I"ll get it with a scout and take cash.

Always XP, unless I need the cash really badly (I need just another 1000 to build my level 7 on day 7, or generally early on high-difficulty games). On Hard or lower I always take XP except to get my Capitol or level 7 a day earlier; on Expert it's a pretty even split for the first few weeks until I have the Capitol and level 7, and on Impossible it's all cash until I at least have the Capitol.

Experience. 2000 gold=1500 exp
To gain those experience points by fighting creatures you would have to fight 25 thunderbirds, 100 grand elves, 21 cyclops kings, or 30 minotaurs. You need 10,000 exp to advance six levels and another 4700 to advance eight levels. While +8 to your primary statistics may not be much you can attain expert proficiency in three secondary skills with those experience points. Overall I think it's worthwhile trading one week's production of troops for those eight levels.

Ive been playing the restoration of erathia campaigns recently and ive been taking cash over experience in this case because i know my heroes can only reach a certain level of experience each game, and i can usually achieve that by engaging in lots of fights.
But in a single map game, ill go for experience for the quick level jumping.

I used to always go for exp but now I stop and think it over a bit. It really does depend on the map and diff level. If you are on a map that you start with a large army, take the money, chances are you will get 3 or 4 levels from your first fight (Such as in "Lord of War")
So I guess my answer would be, it depends. And I take each chest as a seperate choice.

When i was playing Heroes2 i was getting experience - even that the money were not so much overall. Why? Well the creatures didn't have so much hitpoints - and it was taking longer to get level 9 or 10 - as it's here in heroes3. See the pikeman v3.00 - he got 10 HP! Crusadar in Heroes2 got only 50-60 (can't remmember well) - it's like being 5 pikes.
So that's why i'm taking cash in Heroes3 - also you need much more money - even when you are rich enough - having capitol only in one castle and having many other castle will make you life hard if you take experience instead of cash.
Also on campaigns in Heroes3 - as most of the heroes are limited to certain levels - it's not so much big of a deal if you take experience - you'll gain experience even taking onlly the cash...

When playing campaings...
I very rarely take the experience points, cos I usually reach the maximum permitted level very soon and I hate to waste the rest of the experience. I take the cash and build a better army for the main hero.
A little exceptions come to my mind: Sandro taking the XP points in the "Rise of the Necromancer" campaign to get expert necromancy asap and start making his unstoppable bunch of liches.
In single game this rule doesn't apply in the same manner. XP points are important at the beginning, to rapidly choose the secondary skills of the hero, but when you manage to develope some high-level heros, far over the 20th level, those treasure chests are less significant.. and gold is always needed except if you have some rampart treasuries.

Money
I had a rule but sometimes I ignore it:
1,500 experience
1000&1,500 money
It worked well for me. I had a balanced hero. But as I play on harder levels, I tend to use the gold. Gee, you have to be a true geek if you can't hire another hero at Imp but you still get the experience.

Yep Wiggy, this is true but only if u are with Rampart, Stronghold, Necro, Fortress.
If u r with Inferno, Castle , Dungeon or especially Tower u may have to take money even after capitol .

Sikmar has a point
In campaigns, it's very different. Unless you need the experience immediately (as with Sandro in "Rise of the Necromancer"), never take experience with your main because he'll reach his max level in fights pretty quickly. If some secondary heroes carry over, you may want to level them up with the chests, but more often than not just take the gold.
