For Heroes 3
Single player map: Experience every single time, even to the point of not getting chests with scouts if I'm sure I will get my main over there for some reason (kill a large stack to get an artifact, a stat structure, etc.). In the beginning the exp is far more valuable than the gold, because of the high differential in effectiveness of stacks when your hero has good offense/defense, or when you can get that caster main with a decent nuke spell to go around with almost no creatures and kill everything. Later on you don't need gold, and so the exp is better used. Higher level main in the first month means you lose less troops in battle, and IMHO outweighs what you would have been able to buy. Only exceptions are if gold is really scarce (e.g. Impossible difficulty), and then I tend to take the 1000 gold over the 500 exp, sometimes the 1500 gold, but never the 2000 gold.
Campaign: I generally take the 1500 exp boxes, and get gold for the others, until the hero has a few levels, but this is also dependent on how far your hero can go in the particular scenario and the layout of the area surrounding your hero. Then it becomes gold, or exp for extra characters.
Multiplayer: It depends on the resource situation, but I will usually go exp, as a level 8-10 hero with a few less creatures is FAR more effective than a level 2-4 character with a few more. Having those initial levels out of the way (and the skills and primary points that come with it) allow for faster exploitation of the map. Of course if you are on a small map, where you can see your enemy on day 1, of course you go for the gold if you can use it to buy creatures or build.
Getting experience is most definitely not a newbie tactic.
Heroes 4
Experience seems few and far between, and with all the range options in level 1-2 stacks, early battles versus neutral armies are quite easy. And when you get to level 8 or so, the exp slows down immensely, because the mobs stacks aren't getting bigger very quickly, and so you are rolling through them getting little exp, which makes experience much better on the 10 maps I have played so far. Of course there will be times when gold is better, but my gut feeling is that exp is a much better option in heroes 4 than in 3 in more situations.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NOOOO!
Money???
NO WAY!
It does not depend on anything!
ALWAYS and i mean ALWAYS get EXP!
Check this out:
I have a Tower and my friend has a Stronghold. I only manage to have a production of Mages. I am a level 7 Sorceror and my friend is a level 3 Barbarian. I always chose experience and he always chose money. MY IMPLOSION DOES 1500 DAMAGE!!! Do u know how much that is??? i could kill an Azure Dragon and A half.
Secondary skills are the main thing to winning a battle.
So he comes showing off with his 15 Behemoths that perish in 3 rounds. My archers get rid of the cyclops kings.
Check this out 2:
I am playing a map where i can only win by killing a monster. I defeat all my foes and i am lvl 34 thanx to the chests. I have 60 Chaos Hydras (from my beloved diplomacy)
54 Titans, And the rest of the tower's people except the golems (I detest golems, anyways, the fight is over b4 he reaches the other side.) I attack "Zounds... of Power Liches, Which is 800 in each stack, there were 5) I was month 13 and week something... Anyways, I think i can simply kill them with my lvl 7 units. BUT 2 stacks attack, BOOM no more Chaos, other 3 stacks, Boom no more titans. THEN and ONLY THEN, i remember i had magic and i was an extreme sorceror. I make it out with only 167 Master Gremlins.
If you have these secondary Skills and u are defeated, i will give u a thousand dollars:
-Expert Diplomacy
-Expert Air magic
-Expert Earth Magic
-Expert Sorcery
-Expert Mysticism
-Expert Ballistics
-Expert Archery
-Expert Fire Magic
If you have all these and a Spell Power of 32, Then u are practily invincible.
With all these, Implosion Does 2571 Damage.... Lethal...
SO ALWAYS take EXP, You have a steady 4000 from your capitol and the first thing u should buy is that, no matter how many days you have to wait for money, there is also gold stacks, mines and crypts and so on...

I´m not talking about single-player, where you can make all kinds of mistakes, even make this horrible choice of secondary skills that has been suggested above. In multiplayer it´s certain death, running around with your main hero collecting experience from treasure chests. First thing you learned the hard way when you started playing H3 in ToH. You waste two of the most valuable things: Gold and main hero movement points. By building fast and sending your most important hero into battles and skill-enhancers, while others scout and pick up gold&resources, he quickly gathers levels and stats, while progressing on the map and increasing army and production at the same time.

Err... if the P.Ls can finished your Titans and C.Hs in one round, how did you get through the second round with only 167 M.Gs?? The remaining 4 stacks must be filled with loads of creatures, I suppose?
You listed 3 magic secondary skills with no Wisdom? Then you must have been quite lucky to discover a scroll of implosion or the Tome.

money all the way guys. in my first 2 3 years of sod i took experience too but after 6 i almost always take money.V. very important especialy the first week to find as many boxes with money so that u can make as many creature dwellings with castle and have 3 or 4 heroes if the maps allows that. One guy said on one of his replies "i was level 34 thanks to the chests"yeah right. level 34 only from chests. how many did u find? 500?

Quote: Shall it be experience or gold.....this debate has never been proven to fully support either side. I also notice that hardly any of the ToH'ers have given their opinions in this thread. I would tend to listen to them on this matter more so than a regular HC member for the simple fact that ToH has some brilliant and creative competitors. hmm, I wonder what the top dogs think.
.
...this quote simply means the following facts:
- Either you dont know any TOHer...
- ... and/or you simply refuse to read posts
- ... and/or just want to quote something to get attention.
This Thread is full of some of the best TOHers. The answer u request is already given thousand times in this thread, so why recover it?? The Question is already completely answered in Post No.2 by the very good player haile and couldve stopped there already.
Just for you who didnt read, or understand or care, i will give the answer again... so please make sure that u take your time that u may understand:
Generally take the cash, you will always need cash. There are only few occasions, when u should take the experience (already listed in the thread).
Hope i could help even you ,

Well... It depends. If I am short of gold for the moment, I take the gold, but otherwise, I take XP. I think xp is better because of level up --> better stats/new skill --> a greater chance to win a battle --> even more experience! Whoa! And the gold comes.

This isn't as simple as people make it up to be, everything has to be taking in to considderation.
I've been playing heroes online for many years, so i know what i'm talking about.
In the early stages of the game, nomatter what, pick the gold, you'll need it. But after some time, you've got you're capitol and lvl 7 dwelling, you've might got a fair deal of experience, then pick them.
But later on you should stop again, because then you're at the time where you need to protect you're bases, and buying whatever is in them so you're opponents don't get to put that into their army, if they should get their castle back, besides when it is late game, 1500 experience doesn't mean much, only if you need a lower amount than that to get you're next level.
Simple Version: Get Cash at start, Experience at long mid, Cash at the end.
Ofcoursly people may disagree, and i will listen to what they have to say, and i might even bugde a little in mu oppinion, but every person who plays the game, and has done it for a long time, and really has the ability to listen to reason, will agree over time.

Always take the cash regardless of what you think, unless you're a ToH high ranked veteran who knows what hes doing. Otherwise you're just being a newbie, or worse, a n00b (a newbie who doesnt know that hes a newbie)
Unless you have alot of gold and have bought all your troops and need to top a skill off for a main vs main battle.

But i know(at the least, i strongly think) that i'm right, unless you have another point of wiev?

Money, Money, Money
Its very rare for me to take anything but experience with the chests. The only 2 reasons i can think of for taking xp instead of money are:
1. If i need to reach the next level up. This is only if i can get expert air or earth, or adv earth and i have tp or rez. Otherwise i wouldnt even take it for a level up. Simply put there is enough things to fight on a map to gain all the xp u will need.
2. If i have a scout and no army to fight with, i will take xp to get to expert scholar or adv wisdom.
The quicker u can build your creature dwellings, the quicker u can buy the level 6 and 7 creatures, which means the quicker u can fight with these creatures and get that experince anyway

I Really don't get why everyone says money, In heroes 3 you earn 4000 from you're own base, and late game its most about magic dmg and ressurection anyway... So i really don't get it!
Well, you havent given any reasons why you're taking the money, so i'm sticking with my original plan
