cash is better most of the times
i would take the experience if:
1. no other source of experience (i.e. wandering creatures) on the map
2. badly need to go to higher level
3. have built pretty much everything and no creatures to buy
in all other situations i take the CA$H.

I've recently come to a conclusion
about this. I'm in the middle of the campaign w/kilgor the barbarian. In the 3rd senario, it seemed to me that I must expand as smartly as possible. So that I did, I took gold, upintil the end.
For two other reason's was it applicible to neglect EXP.
1: Level limit's could have been achieved for 1/4 heroes anyway's..
2: All skill's were mastered.
These fact's will surely not sway me to "alway's take gold", but merely open my mind to evaluate the situation (senario) first.
Furthermore, I'd like to say gold is kewl, and solymar kick's @*#! lmao..
But I take EXP when WHEN THE SCALE'S ALLOW IT!

Its one thing to playing a campaign vs computer, to get enough gold to be able to buy lvl 7 dwelling first week (and castle if possible)on a set map vs a human player is another. Because if you dont your opponent will have a great advantage with a higher # of lvl 7 creatures than you. And during that week you also need to buy creatures to be able to fight for mines/art guards and those creatures will also cost u gold.
This is just the first week but if you take exp in those chests, well u will prolly get a good hero and with some luck u might have enough gold for lvl 7 week 3 anyway but then you just might already be dead
/Stefan
...and no, i dont always take gold in chests. If im playing a map will lots of res. and i have enough money generating structure i might take that exp but then im usually a high lvl with main hero so that exp doesnt always get needed but if im lacking 1000 exp to next lvl and i have a knowledge tree to get to and a chest is offering that 1000 exp, then id take that exp

I always take money until I have the capitol. After that I is worth investing into your hero. The only exeption is when I play Loynis. It is just to nice getting 1650 exp for a box. I love this guy.

Unless you´re working on something very concrete that you need the experience for immediately, like an early rush attack with a magic hero who wants additional SP and Expert Lightning Bolt, I always considered taking experience from chests something that´s only done by newbies. I´m not saying this to insult anyone, just because I´m surprised that some ToH players seriously seem to regard it as a reasonable alternative. I mean, in the long run, even 5 or 6 chests only make a difference of one experience level anyway. Taking exp is just flushing gold down the toilet.

I understand your view Lews and i agree with most of it, i almost always take gold from chests. But if i get a chest infront of knowledge tree and im missing like 480 to next lvl and i am lvl 17 or something i take the experience. Or if i have 4th lvl spell hero and need to learn adv. wisdom&expert scholar with a hero.
But yes, almost always taking exp from a treasure chest is conciderd a "newbie thing".
