For Nvidia drivers, make sure you uninstall the previous display drivers (using Add/Remove Programs) before installing the new ones.
Go here and select your Video Card and OS to find the drivers.

Maybe it would be wise to first use DriverSweeper, to remove the tenants of the "previous" driver.
As to the betas and stable drivers it's an eternal fight which from them are actually better. I know about some errors which are presented in stable and aren't in beta - fe. for GeForce drivers. (Betas fixed DVI output which latest Stable broke, on the integrated graphic.)
Don't forget an option that you could be also a victim of using bad hardware (Or cursed...)

And here goes my PC dead again... How come it's always the new one that causes problems?
Played some games today ,then I went watching the replays and suddenly screen goes black, motherboard beeps and reboots.
And again, 30 second after windows logged on.
Power supply? Oh yeah, that'll be the 6th one.
I cleaned it out of dust in hopes that it'll help but to my surprise Windows can't even log on before it reboots.
Now I realised that that PC is plugged in to 2 extension cords one of which is very old, there may also be some voltage problems in the wall socket where it's plugged in. My old PC had many power supply problems there aswell but now it's plugged elsewhere and works flawlessly. (otherwise I wouldn't be posting here now )
Whaddaya think?

Hmm this sounds more like my problem I had with my old one, that it reboots after Windows loads. Let it 'rest' for a few hours and try again - if it works you have the same problem as me (most probably) - which is not a good thing though since I don't know its cause (I bought a new PC with everything new after that, it was old and outdated anyway)

I got a new power supply unit from my tech support an hour ago but the problem remains so i called him back and he said it's probably a virus of some kind. So I'll give him my PC tomorrow since components from my two machines aren't compatible (age gap) and hopefully he'll figure out what was the problem in a day or two.

ok so after trying to clean my laptop and finally see whats wrong with it:
red:what it is used to be
green:whhat it is now, about an hour from booting.(playing some crappy game brings it up to high 80s and low 90.
grey:first few minutes after boot up.
So this is what i saw:
and i remember cleaning it not long ago.
So then i take off this cooling GPU,CPU thing and all the gel for CPU is used up and that thing for GPU is dead too.Maybe thats what has been causing the problem. The company has put a cheap heatsink and gel and after a month of gaming it is dead.So ill try to go and buy some good gel and if possible new fan.Hopefully my video card is ok after a few month of frying at 110 C.

How old is it? What CPU does it have?
Recent CPUs are much better at passive cooling. Also even for desktops (not laptops) I would pick a GPU with passive cooling. Less dust problem, less power wasted, less heat buildup if it's designed to work passively, and NO NOISE (no fan)

Well I don't have much experience with AMD and they may overheat easier than Intel, but it seems relatively new.
"Passive" cooling means without any active energy wasted on cooling, just a very optimal heatsink and radiator (usually big and expensive) and a good CPU that doesn't generate much heat, although that's kinda rare these days (but I was talking more about the GPU in this case).
In short: No Fan. Just heatsink.

OK, I'm seriously thinking about going back to IE7. I like Firefox. I really do. I like not having ads and scripts.
But the fact is, IE7 is just faster, at least for me. And I have Fasterfox installed. So... what to do?
But the think I hate about IE7 (besides the ads and scripts) is that there's a tab bar even when there's just one tab open - so it takes up screen space.

I don't remember how many times I've said this here but here it goes again - go for Opera, not IE. It's really worth a try before switching to IE.

Quote: Is Opera really faster than IE?
http://toastytech.com/evil/retrospective.htm
Quote: Opera was slowly finding a niche for itself as it was much lighter weight and faster than IE or Netscape while providing much of the same rendering ability.
IE8 is faster than IE7, but its slower than every other browser on the marked.
Firefox likes to eat memory for lunch, its actually somewhat fast besides that.
Opera is FAST, and its made to render without eating your computer for lunch. The reason its slower than Safari and Firefox and Konqurer, and the other real browsers on JS benchmarks is because its made use the least possible resources but still render the exact same thing(aka lower footprints and all that).
IE7 is 10-20 times slower than the real browsers, and IE8 is only faster than IE7 in the comparisons.
Note: IE8 does not support HTML 4.0, which makes it a outdated piece of software.

So wait. Which is faster: Opera or Firefox?
Update: Well, I tried Google Chrome and I didn't like it. Now I'm trying Opera. It's using more memory than IE7, but seems to be pretty fast.

Seeing as my old PC is starting to produce critical hardware errors on a regular basis lately (well, it's 6yo now) I decided to stop upgrading it and hide it under my bed for a dark hour
In it's stead I'm going to buy a laptop. Thankfully my game PC is still up and kicking so all I expect from the notebook is running smoothly and being able to launch games with medium requirements. Having ~550EUR atm this is the best pick I could find:
NTT CORRINO L 619MU
Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 2.0GHz
RAM 4GB DDR2 800MHz
320GB Harddrive
Gfx Card: nVidia GeForce 9300M GS (256 MB)
Linux
Good or could it be better?

So-so, it has a good and cool (I mean temperature ) video card but a somewhat poor processor, but it should be expected for laptops anyway. Just remember not to play games too much as the video card may overheat or something, but if you're playing older games, be sure to limit their FPS to around 30 so it won't use full capacity of video card (and thus not overheat it) for more FPS which you in 99% of the cases won't notice.
How good is Linux with wine (I mean the package "wine" that can run Windows apps)?

It works for me.
I play:
*Diablo 2
*Fallout 1+2
*Warcraft 3
*Heroes 2 + 3
*Jedi Knigth Outcast + Academy
*TES III: Morrowind
I would rate it: "Working quite well". They have nailed most of the DX 9 api, and have started on the api of DX 10. They have not touched the .net framework, but you can haul in the 2.0 version of it.
They have done quite the job on most of Windows API too.
Going by appdb, CS 1 of photoshop runs flawless. Also seen several post on another forum i am on, going by that they are amased over that MS Word actually worked. Some times stuff will run better under wine than natively, while some stuff will be a bit slower.
Edit: I would say the question is what distro is shipped with the computer. Some are crap, others are clumsy, some are quite good.
Edit 2: Since this tread got active again, i can properly answer mvass:
Quote: Is Opera really faster than IE?
My dad got his hands on an antic laptop, 14-15 screen and an old AMD processor(it around 400mhz) . He installed windows 98 se on it, came with IE 6. I got my
hands on it, and well i got my test chance. IE 6 ran really slow and was not responding properly, slow like sirup.
Opera was in contrast responding quite nicely, and it render quite much faster than IE6 on the top of that. It was only a tad slow, which i could blame the hardware for. It worked great for working in multiple tabs without any slowdown. Latest version <3

I don't really care about DirectX because I'm not playing many games, I would like it to support more of a "workstation" type of computer. I have just checked and from the news it seems it is in pretty good shape -- I might give it a try in a virtual machine when I'll decide to learn some Linux
BTW I like Kubuntu, is that a bad distro?
