Kubuntu is a good distro. I was dual booting Kubuntu with Ubuntu. Kubuntu is more like Windows because it's KDE instead of GNOME which Ubuntu uses. I personally prefer Kubuntu more.

I'll decide to learn some Linux

BTW I like Kubuntu, is that a bad distro?

*buntu is *buntu. I would go for it
Its as William said. More information: KDE uses QT, GNOME and XFCE uses GTK.
There is little to set up, quite much works out of the box. The most importent to learn is:
*You got something called a repos, which reduces hassle of installing software
*When something is not in the repos, you can still find binary files for it
*Or you could compile it yourself, which is not a hassle due the automake.

I use Easy MP3 Sound Recorder and set it so that it records the WAVE OUT or the output of whatever the soundcard is.

Out of curiosity, how is KDE more like Windows than GNOME is?

Because of the way it is set up and the GUI. Just look at Ubuntu and then look at the GUI of KDE. It was designed to have a GUI much like the Windows one does. Does that answer your question?

But can't you customise the GNOME GUI so it would look like Windows?

To be honest, I never tried it but I'm going to assume the answer is no you can't. It would be awesome if you could but then what would be the point in KDE if in GNOME you could just customise it to look like windows? KDE would be essentially pointless and probably wouldn't exist I think. lol

You can. Most deskop enviroments are quite modable in Linux on the top of that.
GNOME was created a deskop enviroment, so was KDE.
To but it bluntly another way, people do not agree on what is the best solution. So they make different solutions, hence the amount of deskop enviroments availon.

Origins

KDE was founded in 1996 by Matthias Ettrich, who was then a student at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen. At the time, he was troubled by certain aspects of the Unix desktop. Among his qualms was that none of the applications looked, felt, or worked alike. He proposed the formation of not only a set of applications, but rather a desktop environment, in which users could expect things to look, feel, and work consistently. He also wanted to make this desktop easy to use; one of his complaints with desktop applications of the time was that his girlfriend could not use them. His initial Usenet post spurred a lot of interest, and the KDE project was born.[2]

The name KDE was intended as a word play on the existing Common Desktop Environment, available for Unix systems. CDE was an X11-based user environment jointly developed by HP, IBM, and Sun, through the X/Open Company, with an interface and productivity tools based on the Motif graphical widget toolkit. It was supposed to be an intuitively easy-to-use desktop computer environment.[3] The K was originally suggested to stand for "Kool", but it was quickly decided that the K should stand for nothing in particular. Additionally, one of the tips in certain versions of KDE 3 incorrectly states that the K currently is just meant to be the letter before L in the Latin alphabet, the first letter in the word Linux (which is where KDE is usually run).[4]

Matthias Ettrich chose to use the Qt toolkit for the KDE project. Other programmers quickly started developing KDE/Qt applications, and by early 1997, a few applications were being released.

Basicaly, some people got together and created an entire deskop enviroment using QT for Unix systems and tada they made KDE.
GNOME on the other hand was made because of the questioning of QT's license, which was not entirely free back then.
Well, the more the marryer they say?

PS: this is what my deskop looks like, running Gnome:

I'm gonna rig up a Fluxbox one later one to test too.

Got another one on my mind -
Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 2.0GHz
RAM 4GB DDR2 800MHz
320GB Harddrive
Gfx Card: nVidia GeForce 9300M GS (256 MB)ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670
Linux none
costs 730(former cost 550) and the only major change is the graphic card. But then again if I were to import it from another country it would cost me up to 150 euros less making it ~680 + Windows installed. Them comes the cost of importing but it still should be cheaper.
Sadly I can't find anything with a better CPU around this proce range without sacrificing RAM or gfx card (or even batteries for that matter, lol)

Right... now Firefox is messing with me...

You know when you point at a link, the URL shows up at the bottom of the screen? Like this: (in Explorer)

However, Firefox seems to be in a bad mood so it insists on not showing it... like this:

And it's not that the Noscript bar is in the way or something... I tried removing it.

Any idea what's wrong? It's really annoying since I like to know where the hell I'm going....

Got my laptop couple hours ago, so far so good except for one thing - booting takes 7 minutes every time
It's running x64Vista, tried shuting down autostart programs, increased power consumption, checked 'quick boot' in BIOS but it's still the same
Did anyone encoutered such problems before and knows how to deal with it? I still have 10 days to return it to the shop without specifing a reason

Run:
Regedit
search for Run, and whole string(so it will only detect "Run" instead of detecting "SowhatRunLol".
Remove anything that you do not like, google the startup key if your not sure.
Its located like Local Machine ---> Software ---> Microsoft ---> Windows ---> Local. Aka startup entry.

Run:
services.msc
Find "superfetch", and disable it from startup AND running.
Turn of UAC while your on it, so long you know what your doing(running IE equals sueside) your safe anyway.
