Quote: Got my laptop couple hours ago, so far so good except for one thing - booting takes 7 minutes every time
It's running x64Vista
And you wonder what the problem is?
Get x64 XP.

I have run into an issue. I have Vista x64.
Yes, that is a problem in itself. However, the greater problem is how to run 16-bit Windows applications. I can run DOS stuff with DOSbox, and 32-bit Windows stuff runs okay most of the time, but what about 16-bit Windows programmes?
Advice is appreciated.

Install a virtual machine software (like Microsoft VirtualPC) and use that to install a full-speed virtual version of Windows 98 or 2000. Just be sure to install the Virtual Machine addons/additions.
Virtual PC is a free download from Microsoft, Windows 98 and 2000 are OS types many people have a disc lying around for and don't need activation.

I'd do that if I had a copy of 98 or 2000 lying around. Which I don't.

Any other old copies of Windows? 95? Server? XP (which you'd have to waste an activation for, but if you save a copy of the VHD you'll never need to activate it again)?

Quote: No. Don't have anything.
No old PCs with license/product keys for any older versions of windows anywhere? >_<
If you do I can use that key to make you a VHD and send it to you.
If not um... maybe try Linux with Wine? I don't know how to set that up myself though.

Install the Linux distribution of your choice, install wine, play.

How come you don't have an older version of Windows around? What did you use before?
BTW: VirtualPC sucks.

Before, I had a computer with XP. But the computer I'm using right now is new, and has Vista 64. And I don't have any copies of older Windows versions lying around - seeing as how I'm at college, they're four hours away by plane.

Dude, you don't backup important stuff like that -- what if you need to reinstall Windows because something went wrong or the hard drive is dying (and you bought a new one)? I put them on a USB stick.

Yes, yes, I have erred. Now, is Linux + Wine the only solution? Because I really don't want to mess with Linux again.

Hmm... well you could always "download" it. Not unethical if you own it IMO.

Huh? Windows 98 a pain to install? I've always found it extremely easy.

Ok, I am serious about the following.
My fan in the pc @ work is not "silent" any more. And I probably know why:
$ uptime
08:54:23 up 276 days, 13:42, 3 users, load average: 0.53, 0.44, 0.28
$
And my question is now this: Would you attempt to turn off the machine if you have urgent work to do ?

Lets se:
If your under the "correct" OS type then go to /proc/acpi/fan and set the files there to reasonable levels. You will need admin powers to do so.
The other solution which is easy is: Get a box of compressed air, turn of the computer, let it cool completely down, use this box and use it to "clean" the computer after removing the casing(usually 1 lid at one side). Clean it properly, and then its good to go.
Ever better: Ask the IT department to do so.
