That's pretty much what I have(some differences, but almost equal) and I can play any game I want, though I should get more memory(since I'm hardcore!(nah, I just need for my graphicing(man, that uses a lot of memory!))).
Gaming should be no problems att all. I was going to suggest getting an ATI Radeon 5xxx, since they are a lot better and very cheap these days, I guess that's unnecessary when you already have a 4850 that'll suffice.
In short: I approve, except for the GPU, but that's propably because I'm a bit cranky(I got my 4860 right before the five thousand series was released for a reasonable price).
EDIT: One more thing! Get a motherboard that support USB 3. It'll be dominating the market soon and there's such a HUGE difference in USB 2 and 3!

Thanks. I'm really happy to hear that you have something similar and no problems with it.
Oh yeah, totally forgot about the USB 3 thingy.
How do I know if a motherboard supports that?

Quote: Yo.
Case: Antec Three Hundred Midi Tower Black
Motherboard: MSI 870A-G54, Socket-AM3
Processor: AMD Phenom II X2 560
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 4850
Power Supply Unit: Corsair VX 550W PSU
RAM: Corsair Value S. DDR3 1333MHz 2GB CL9 (2x)
Harddrive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB
DVD player/burner thingy: Sony Optiarc DVD±RW burner AD-7260S
OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SE
Would the following work without anything blowing up?
I would go for a quadcore, 8GB of memory, better graphics card and at least 700W PSU. The PSU gets best efficiency when they're around 50%load.
And windows 7 64-bit ultimate/professional of course. Not sure if it works for you since you're in still in sixth form but student windows. 65$ for professional and at times there's an offer for ultimate for 20$. At least all uni students get those. You might want to ask your school about that.
As you can see I need computing power, wii emulating, stragegy games, schoolwork related stuff. So my preferences are a tad different but if you're up for your regular FPS gaming then a dualcore and that memory will suffice.
And if you're not upgrading your graphics then that's cool.
So in the end I'd change the PSU(since the difference in money is minimal and you never know) and the windows because it sucks to notice later on something doesn't work because you can't use XP compatibily mode for example.
64-bit offers more computing power but brings problems with older games and drivers.

I'll consider that. I am straining my budget with this though.
If money wasn't a problem I'd go buy Blue Gene.
I mean, that thing has 65536 processors.
I'd probably be afraid of it turning all Skynet on me or something though...

The difference of money in PSU really is something like five euros max.
You could just install your old XP on the machine to save money.

Don't have the discs.
And I really do want Windows 7.
EDIT: Huh, just noticed that the Motherboard I had chosen does have support for USB 3.0. Good thing that you reminded me anyway Shares.
Guess I'm ready to go then. I'm nervous

There are markings on the motherboard. Very small and unclear markings most of the time though.
Are you sure you have enough beer for the project?

Unlocking Quadcore on the processor feels tempting, but I'm gonna get familiar with all this first.

When you unlock quadcore you might have to reinstall windows to get it to recognise the fourth...

I spilled a bit of water on my laptop keyboard. Thinking it wasn't much, I unplugged the AC adapter, wiped the surface, and left the computer off overnight. I turn it on today and everything works - except for the keyboard. What to do?

There might still be some water left under the keys, try taking them off, place the laptop up-side down for a few hours or use the hairdryer I had a similar problem with my mp3 recently (rain) - couldn't use it for a day and after that it kept turning off at random for a few more days. Everything is fine now though.
