A clean fresh install will do wonders compared to upgrading. Just back up the stuff ou want to save first. You can do the whole thing yourself. First add/replace new hardware then put in the Windows 7 cd and rewrite the partition table before installing. Voila! Simple and clean.

Taking to a professional depends. The end result won't be any different. It will just save some of your own time and cost more money. But you will probably be waiting it back from the professionals when you could have finished it by yourself.

Few pointers:
- Make sure to have at least a firewall program on an USB stick or CD so you can install it before connecting to internet. Anti-virus wouldn't hurt but isn't necessary.
- Check all the devices you have in the machine before wiping. Hunting drivers for an unknown device later is a pain in the arse.
- Have a second machine with internet connection available during install if possible. Helps a ton if you encounter any problems. Also makes for good entertainment when you wait for the Windows to install.
- Have a few bottles of beer/coffee/cola and donuts/biscuits/sausage whatever you like available during waiting times.

Windows 7, and Ubuntu got firewalls. The browsers should included would be stable regardless, which means its not a risk to go online(but prolonged use of IE will get you a virus).

lspci and lshw, and included drivers in Linux. Why would anyone bother? Its still identifiable, and if its not built yourself its just to find it from the manufacturers website.

Ah true, seven does have firewall, forgot about that. So you can skip that part.
It isn't that much about browsers. It doesn't matter even if you don't use the browser someone is going to come over your IP address sooner or later. The amount of scanning going on in the net is unbelievable.

A number of PCs tend to have devices that are badly listed or aren't listed at all. Mostly motherboard special features. When you later see an unknown device in windows control panel and you have no idea what it is it is a pain.

Still have not found a device that i could not figure out what it was. Just some checking the inf files for drivers and device identification in Windows did the trick.
And i still have not encounterd a device that lshw does not figure out on Unix.

I got one a while back. I tihnk it was two weeks ago.
Was a feature of an onboard sound system. Don't recall the specifics. Was somekind of sound "enchance" system if I recall correctly. Took a while to find out what MB it had and of course the manufacturer site didn't list any information or drivers. God damn all manufacturers that forget products as soon as new line comes out.

I think you should be able to handle the format/reinstall yourself. Did you look and see if you have an option to restore the computer to factory specs? Also, what is the Manufacturer and model numbe of your computer? If you use Google you can search for the manufacturer and model number of your computer and probably find a support website that walks you through doing what you want to do.

I bought the parts for my computer seperately and put it together myself. (i posted a thread but near all of my threads are made in the vw and after fending off requests for the specs the thread was deleted)

But i am smart enough to have kept fairly clear documentation of the parts i bought (parts i didn't replace i have no idea what they are)
The only things i don't know what they are is the soundcard (its a soundblaster but of what series is totally unknown)

Quote:

PS: upgrade hardware BEFORE installing new Windows, windows got a crappy driver system and some nice errors which are done on purpose when regarding swapping it.

i'll keep that in mind. i was planning on replacing the awful soundcard. but i don't know about switching from windows. i haven't had much experience with linux. i might give it a shot if it can run games and replaces some of the basic software i use on a regular basis (Word, Firefox etc)

I do know what drivers i have for my video card and have kept the install cd's for most everything i bought.

I don't have any of that kind of food (parents are into the buy only organic). What do i do?

I can post the specs if they are wanted.

Look in the control panel under device drivers and see if it tells you what sound card you have. Otherwise you can look on the sound card itself. If you look on the sound card you'll need to shut down your computer and unplug it first. After it is unplugged push in your power button for about 30 seconds to hopefully drain any charge that is built up due to a capacitive effect. Touch some metal to make sure you don't have a static charge built up on you becofe you touch the sound card. If you can't see the model # you may need to unplug the wires connected to it and unplug the card.

I was messing with the color on my desktop background and I got a bsod in windows 7.  It says:

BAD_POOL_HEADER

BCCode: 19
 BCP1: 0000000000000003
 BCP2: FFFFF900C20A8010
 BCP3: FFFFF900C20A8010
 BCP4: FFF900C20A8010FF
 OS Version: 6_1_7600
 Service Pack: 0_0
 Product: 768_1

I hope it isn't hardware.  Has this happened to anyone?  I'm not quite sure what to do.

In light of what you were doing I think the problem may be the display driver. Try reinstalling it or try doing a system restore.

Here is a link that may help you.

About WinSxS..............

Now my backup OS that i use for gaming is suffering a minor creep, which is really annoying.
I gave it enough space for its purpose when i made the partition, which is about 60 gigabyte of space too roam on. Shadow backup is killed off, it uses space for no reason(specially when i can spesific restorepoints regardless).
Now I finally get into a minor creep: I am out of space. That means 5 gigabyte of space left, and i have cleaned all i have managed.
Now after quite some looking the real problem is that %/Windows uses entire 10 gigabytes. I have purged the driver backup, which is safe.
Now after a bit more look i have found that %/Windows/winsxs uses about 6gigabyte of space.
If your on XP you might not have heard of this, its a attempt to get a copy of every darned .dll on the system and more. A attempt to "solve" the .dll hell........... by throwing as many as them into 1 folder as possible------------- Its 6 gigabytes of small useless files of roughly 1-4 megabyte...... Why is it there? For compitablitys sake, its roughly at 5 gigabytes on a clean install *gigantic facepalm*...........

How do i purge this monstrosity? After some read i have found out that just deleting it would kill of the system since everything uses the dll's from there now, quite the pain. But they only use a few.
Its currently on roughly 33.000 files divided on roughly 8.000 folders.
Help?

Yes...
The wonder of new generation windows...
No good way I know of. You might want to just try deleting something by random till the machine refuses to start anymore then restore but it's a time taking job and you can't be sure if something wasn't needed for some program. You could try opening the programs you need and then just delete everything. When it prompts about some file being in use chooce ignore all. Should give you some space but do make a restore point before you do that. There's no way to be sure what you need and what not. The snows made it so that there's even multiple versions of each .dll there...

Other things that might help:

One thing I find that can take a lot of space is the automatic windows restore points it does after every upgrade. Hidden (possibly system, can't remember for now) folders named "$windowsrestorepoint" or something along those lines. There should be one folder for each update installed. Delete all those.

Turn off hibernate.

Turn off system restore.

Turn off recycle bin.

Run compclean.
cmd --> compcln.exe

Remove the temporary files of everything you have. Browsers, messengers, windows temp(s), etc. Usually in the local settings. Sometimes wander off to somewhere else. Try these to delete the temporary files:

del %temp%\. /f/s/q
rd /s/q %temp%\

del %tmp%\. /f/s/q
rd /s/q %tmp%\

del /f /s /q %systemdrive%\*.dmp
del /f /s /q %systemdrive%\*.tmp
del /f /s /q %systemdrive%\*._mp
del /f /s /q %systemdrive%\*.log
del /f /s /q %systemdrive%\*.old

You can try with some cleaner program like CCleaner or EasyCleaner(not designed for win 7 or vista but should still work). They usually manage to find more than you do on your own. But if you've diligently searched it through those won't be helping much.

Oh, yes, the shadow copy and system restore are tied together in newer windows versions. Forgot that.

Go pack some files if you have nothing else left. It'sa pain but can give some space if needed. You could pack the winsxs folder but it will make it even slower than it already is. Not usre if the windows will try to stop you from packing it but you'll find your way around it I'm sure.
