Does it mark those files as system files during defrag?
But if you didn't detect any bad sectors that shouldn't be the cause...

When I defrag the partition with the Windows (C) it also says some files couldn't be defragmented, and says to check the reports file to see the list of files not defragmented, but when I check the list is empty. (although for some reason, the graphic shows some red parts)

No idea if they are system files or not, but I do know they are not unmovable files (green ones), they are red (fragmented).
Quote: But if you didn't detect any bad sectors that shouldn't be the cause...
No idea if it detected any bad sectors since I did it before getting into Windows (it was scheduled since it must run that before Windows is loaded) and the 'report' disappeared too quick to read.

That starts to sound like bad sectors...
But what use is it if it doesn't show it.
There is a way to get it show results even there. I just don't remember it right now.
You could use CD to run it from there. Then you can run the scandisk live.

Great, I tried again with Acronis TrueImage, it still didn't work
Why the hell does it give me corrupted when I verify?

Ok it happened again.
Is there a possibility to be heating or something? This time, when I loaded the second Hard Disk (the one that worked before), it loaded Windows (in the sense that it got past the Welcome screen), and then after some 3 seconds of the desktop, it restarted my comp. Then, it didn't want to get to the Welcome Screen at all. I shut it down and after waiting for an hour (I unplugged it as well), now it worked.
What can it be? Overheating? Although I don't think why there would be any overheating.
Also, why can't I defragment some files on the C: drive, even when I'm running the defragmentor from the other Hard Disk (and C: is no longer in use, and doesn't even have any Unmovable parts anymore when defragmenting). What does it mean that I can't defragment some files? Bad Sectors or something else?
Another problem is that, when I try to create an image of the C: partition with SelfImage (from the secondary Hard Disk, so it's not even in use!), I get the following error message, exactly at the same place everytime (I tried multiple times)Quote: Read thread encountered ESelfImageFileError exception: "Error while reading from \Device\Harddisk0\Partition1: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)
What's happening? What does it mean? And, if possible, how it can be fixed?

I have XP, so it seems it can't be overheating...
I just wish I could at least save an image of my Hard Disk to transfer it to another, but unfortunately because of that error it doesn't work. I'm starting to think that it is connected with the files that can't be defragged.

This sucks. I have absolutely no idea what's causing the validation to fail. It doesn't seem I'm alone either and obviously it hasn't been addressed (for example: this guy has something similar). The problem is that it appears to work -- I can browse the backed up files etc... but I'm wondering if they will freaking work with all the bootable info and all that? I have no idea, when I verify it just gives me a CRC error no matter what program I use -- I used R-Drive Image, Norton Ghost and Acronis TrueImage, all of them fail the verification.
Then I got around with this nice tool: HD Tune (the free version). I have absolutely no idea if it'll help me find 'bad' sectors or whatever other **** that is preventing the damn verification from working, but it's a nice tool, it displays some stuff about the HD. Note I haven't scanned for errors yet but I will soon.

Do you live in Iasi, Ash?
Because if so, I'm gonna be there between Christmas and NYE, visiting some drunktard friends of mine there (long time since I visited my "college" town). I can come fix yer crappy comp if ye need.
And with this, I will finally prove that Ash is a fat, 50 years old MALE.

I missed your updates here.
Now I'd say pretty certain that it's a HD failure.
If not the HD itself then at least the drive table has been damaged.

I got 1 thingy you could do................ if this works your computer is still runable and i guess the BIOS works, the hardrive is another matter. In a lucky case you might even be able to resque some files.
Download and burn this out: Puppy Linux 4.11
This is Puppy Linux, a Linux designed to run live and work on older computer(really the point is that it can run crap). The file size is about 94mb, meaning its small and most burning aplications should be able to burn it(like this one.
Burn insert, run it live and follow the instructions and if you get the choice of install and Live(stick to Live).
If this can run, i guess your PC is working. If you can rescure files from the Windows parition with it, i guess you got lucky with Windows not locking down.
If you can't resque files aka mounting the Win drive check what error you got. I got no clue on mounting in Puppy since i got Debian anyway, but it should do the trick to test the PC.

I don't know about puppy linux but Knoppix is live linux I use because it's similar to windows so I don't have to learn everything all over again. 5.1.1 is the last CD version. After that they are DVD version.
Download, burn to CD, stick it in and just let it load.
If you're not using encryption in Windows you'll be able to copy everything you want from the HD(s). I was able to copy even files that windows had locked from one of my older hard drives which malfunctioned and it's windows was gone all awry. Windows(from another HD) wasn't able to recover the locked files so I was pleasantly surprised.

You can get live CD's of most Linux OS's. The one I preferis Ubuntu or Kbuntu. Kbuntu is a KDE version of Linux as opposed to Ubuntu being GNOME. KDE works similar to the way Windows does, but has many advantages over Windows.

Yeah i know you get most as live, but imo.
It sounds like Knoppix is on 2gb size.... I wonder if somebody would bother to download a dvd .ISO file for burning when its all about file resque.
Ubuntu is 660'ish if i remember correctly, its a good OS in its manners. HAven't checked the size of Interpend however, i guess its not that much bigger. I would go for Puppy unless somebody feels like attempting a new OS(and please set a swap for of 1/1 to RAM if you do).

It has a lot of technical tools for HD manipulation, and it is only around 100MB (a bit more), latest version. I used the remaining space to put my other 'critical' tools there and it fit very well in 700 MB
link here
(to download it though, you'll need to Google).

Are those installed on the CD or just the installers?
A little too many alternative softwares but good otherwise.
