Thanks del_diablo, but that was not the answer to my question.  I was afraid if the power supply would fail. Anyway, I hadn't rebooted for so long that I had forgotten that I have some "random" nagging by the fans. There is some sort of problem that I haven't figured it out; sometimes on boot I might also receive an error message but not always. And guess what, even the tech support guys didn't get it. But anyway, until something dies, I can not hope for a replacement (that's the policy).
Finally, yes, I have the correct OS; debian.
Thanks anyway, I rebooted and the power supply is still working.

This might be a dumb question, but: if I want to upgrade the RAM on my laptop, how do I determine what kind of RAM to buy? I currently have 2GB. Would like to go to maybe 4.

If your laptop happens to be a Gateway you can go to the below site and either enter your serial number or allow gateway to scan for your serial number. That should let you access all the support documentation for your computer.

Or you may be able to go to google and type in how much memory can Gateway Model XXX laptop have? Something like that. Or call a place like Best Buy, tell them you are wanting to upgrade your memory and ask what maximum memory your computer can have and they can look it up for you.

So, I went to Dell's website and they have a utility to determine what kind of memory you need to buy for your laptop. I followed the directions and it seems to suggest that 2GB is the maximum amount of memory I can install on my computer. Is this possible?
Computer has two memory slots, and currently each slot on my computer has "Dual In-line Memory Module 1GB, 533, 128X64, 8K, 200", whatever that means. I assume the 533 is memory speed (Hz) value. So according to Dell's utility, I am unable to increase the amount of RAM, but I could, for instance, "upgrade" to better chips (Technology: DDR2 SDRAM Memory Speed: 800 MHz). Price would be $56. Would this be worth it at all?

I doubt it's worth it and the one you're looking at is DDR2, I don't see that specified in your current modules, so it may not work.
And yeah it's definitely possible, because of the motherboard northbridge chipset, it can't handle more than 2GB it seems.

Will you gain any performance from it? Maybe, but very little.
Is it worth it? No.

Nope, that's the limit of DDR1 (without overclocking), it's the equivalent of 1066 DDR2 which do exist. Do a Google search if you want.
"equivalent" as in same frequency but half the bandwidth (in truth, DDR2 has half the frequency advertised but double bandwidth compared to DDR1)

Oh snowing great, my Windows Vista install just stopped working. Its not booting, and since its OEM for a laptop there is no "fix-CD" and a proper way to fix it.
It works like this:
1. Selects to start Windows Vista
2. Looks ok for about 1 second, then it claims there is something wrong and it refuses to start Windows. So it starts its "fix" tools, which is frankly useless, and there is no information on what is wrong either.
3. In the "what I am suppose to do"-place in the autofix tools running in the 800x600 GUI says "attempting to fix broken file system". This is frankly bullsnow because I got full acces to it from my other OS.
4. The autofix did not do a damn thingy....... It says error again on reboot, and so I decided it was dead(in one sense of the word).
I don't boot Windows to play games anyhow, so I frankly got no use of it. The thing is that if I would need it, its nice to have. I would just have reinstalled it if it was not OEM(repartisionates the HD to an annoying setup, and lots of register to clean up).
Help? I got acces to the system anyhow, so I can easly add register keys or modifiy whatever obscure config that is needed.

Sounds to me like you have some problems with the hard drive having corrupted some essential Windows files needed for booting (bad sectors?). I'd backup my data as soon as possible if I were you.

I'm still in school, and I am to lazy to get a WM up and going. I just got it there for "in case something comes up", which has yet to happen.
I boot it up with several months between each time, when I need to. Otherwise its pretty much dead.

Make a scan first and see if the HDD is fine or not.
HD Tune can do it, for instance.
EDIT: wait that's a Windows app... I'm sure there's something like it for Linux though, or just use Wine.

The HD is fine, so thats not the problem. If Windows thinks its a HD error, I would have gotten a big bad error popup everytime I started the computer on my prime OS. Or a a big shoutout in my main error log.
I image 2 possibly ways of solving this:
*Figuring out how to disable Windows to be able to check itself on startup
*Link to a torrent to a 100% minimal vista version?

Most errors aren't repeatable in the same spot, it's enough for 1 bit to be wrong ONCE to devastate the OS bootup. Though, you could also have a virus or rootkit.
Actually HDDs have a lot of errors daily, but they use very strong ECC protection which solve most of them.
