8 hours per day is too much.
Sounds a bit anarchistic, doesn't it 
Well, imho, it's true. In most countries, we work 40 hours per week, which translates to 8 hours per day. I personally think it's way too much.
A common day looks like: get up, eat, waste X hours to get to work (depending where do you live - but traffic jams are pretty much everywhere), spend 8 hours in work, waste X hourse to get back, eat something, whoopsie the day is nearly over.
A common person gets up around 6AM and gets back home around 4-5 PM.
So many hours of work gets you tired and not really interested in active relaxation, so you just throw yourself in front of TV or PC and get more fat/more cholesterol. Of course there are lots of people that can go to gym after work without any problems, but I'm not among them, so I conveniently ignore them 
It looks bad already, and when you add stuff that you inevitably have to do, like cleaning, shopping, cooking, washing.. How much time do you have for your hobbies - like, 1 hour? -_-
It sucks. We work too much. Life shouldn't be like that. We're not ******* ants.
What's worse, most jobs I've tried just force you to waste time in there, because you do whatever is to be done in 4-5 hours, and get bored to death waiting for the time when you can go home because your stupid chief doesn't allow it earlier, of course.
I think work should not last longer than 4-5 hours per day, unless it's really necessary. ~~
Just don't give me the economic reasons why it should. Forget the money, charts and heartless analyzes for a second - be a human, not a cash-counting machine
IT'S ANNOYING! Think how many wonderful things you could have done if you spent all the futile worktime for something productive -_-

I work 4 to 3 hours 3/4/5 times a week. It's not bad really, since I have the whole day to do whatever I want, then leave at about 5:30 pm to go to work, then get home at 9 or 10 and just relax on the computer before I eventually go to sleep. That's what my daily cycle has been for the last month or so.
For work experience, I once had to work for 4 days in a row 8 am to midnight. You think 8 hours is too much? Think about that. I was thankful it was only for a few days. If it was more than that then I may have died.

You're really lucky  I hope I can get a job like that.
That's why I'm aiming at becoming a lecturer on Warsaw Tech. 12 hours per _week_ and three months of leave? Hell yes! Even if the payment isn't really that hot.
But, what is the point of working 12 hours per day so you get lots of cash?
You don't even have time to play with your expensive toys lol (cars, plasma TVs, whatever.). Cause you have to work.

Lol I don't do it anymore (nor would I), but in 2000 I worked a total of 99 hrs two weeks (for a total of 198 hrs) in a row. Was also moving to a new house at the time. 80+ hrs was not uncommon. Before the holidays I was working 12hr/day 7/days a week. Almost feels like a vacation now that it is down to 10 hr/days 5/days a week  . But even 40 hr weeks can be way too long. Need 32 hr weeks, with mandatory vacations every 90 days or so .

Work faster you lazy punk! Sorry just had to do that You've got a point I'm afraid, we need to make things like in ancient Greece where the philosophers were laid back and the slaves did all the work. Wait..
In all seriousness though there are the people who put up with the dirty work and those that sit around and gain a lovely salary. Not sure what could be done about that but for now we have to keep our eyes open for opportunities and things that can open doors for better. Yes not much consolation either.. Unless you are born into a wealthy family it can take a while till you work your way upwards.
Lecturer sounds pretty good, around here it's the teachers and professors that have the easiest time. Payment isn't the highest but if you add things up it's a lot more appealing than other jobs. Hope you get it

Work is 8 hours a day, 5 days of 7. Think of holidays and vacation.
In this case your net work time is 40 hours of 168 per week, which is less than a quarter.
First thing to do is reducing overall work time which means reduction of travel time to your workplace. Alternatively you may check whether home-office is possible. If you reduce the overall travel time to 5 hours or 1 hour per day, that leaves another 3 for getting ready to work in the morning. This makes overall work time 25% of your time, NOT counting holidays and vacation. If you reduce sleeping time to 6 hours per day or another 25% that leaves a fat FIFTY PERCENT for keeping the apartment tidy, shoppings and stuff plus spare time and hobbies which should be enough.
In fact the trouble is, that too much spare time is wasted with just hanging around - so you tend to feel cheated when your spare time is up again yet another time.
More seriously, if you have to work for your living, AT BEST (at worst you won't have any freedom in this) you will have trouble to find the right mix between money (which you have to work for) and spare time (which is life time minus work time).
If you work like hell - and believe me, LOTS of people work more than 40 hours a week - you'll increase the money available to you, but lack the time to really enjoy the benefits of it; for example you may buy all video games you want, but when do you play them?
If you don't work at all, you have all the time in the world - but money's too tight to really enjoy the benefits of it: for example you COULD play all the video games you like, if only you had a state-of-the-art PC or gaming machine.
So big part of living happily is finding the right balance here.
A first step is of course to stop wasting time. This would mean, for example, post in forums only in your WORKING time.
A second would be to stop wasting money, of course.

JJ: It's not less then a quarter. You include time used for sleeping in your calculation. What for? You can't do anything in that time, neither work nor have fun. It's pointless to include it. Assuming you sleep 10 hours (well, I do ), you still work 8 out of 14 hours available each day, which is not less then a quarter, but more than half ;> Not counting the time needed to prepare for work, get to work and get back, of course, which makes it 70-80% of the day. Argh. Talk about ants

You must include sleeping time because people are not sleeping for different times. Some make do with 5 hours, others need 10.
When I was a student I used to work in a steel mill in my semester holidays. Work round the clock in 3 shifts. They used to walk round on busy days and ask whether someone was willing to do a double shift. I admit to being a whimp: since I was there to make as much money as possible in the 2 months I worked there, I agreed the first time they went round. I had started at 6 and instead of going home at 14 I did the next shift as well up to 22. Of course the next regular shift began at 6 the next day...
Never did a double shift again, cured once and for all. Boy, was I exhausted.
In any case, sleeping 10 hours is pure luxury. Probably you have too much to dream at night.

Well the 'average' and 'normal' sleep time for an adult is 7-8 hours. And if work takes you another eight hours you're left with half the remaining time for doing something else (hobbies, etc), and this not including all the preparing and time needed to get to work, not to mention cleaning the house, eating, and other miscellaneous things like that.

Try going to graduate school or being a post-doc. If you do 60 hours a week you're considered a slacker. I'm starting my new job in two weeks and I'm looking forward to only having to work 40 hours a week.

If you work less then you'll have more time, therefore, if you spend it well, you'll have a much better life than if you were to apply that same thing if you worked 8 hours. The longer you work, then obviously you're going to have less time to be able to have a good life. That's what I think anyway.

If you feel that good life/hapiness = big house, big car, big TV and lots of cash, maybe yes.
But if you don't want more cash that you, well, need (I mean the amount you need for all the necessary luxury you can't live without - not just food and stuff, I don't mean living like a Spartan ), do not plan to be rich or have 5 overpriced cars in your garage, I would aim at other happiness bringers rather than cash. Say, relationships, hobbies, et cetera.
But there are of course people who enjoy working a lot and gaining wealth. And that's fine of course. World would be a pretty sad place if everybody thought like me
Corribus, that's pretty terrible. Maybe you should try to change it? After all, you're a smart guy, with high education (PhD, right?) and you don't need to be some corporation's slave overworking for some pennies

Well, actually it's easier to have a bad time in 8 hours working time than in 5, with a bad time at work tending to ruin your spare time at that.
Of course the secret is to work enough to actually be able to appreciate your spare time and earn a certain minimum of money to pay the rent, food and a little extra, but not so much to be forced to spent most of the additional money for things you wouldn't spend it for if you would work less.
Examples for this would be the necessity to have a certain amount of quality business wardrobe if you work full-time in an office... going for lunch in some diner or snack bar... wasting fuel for your too big car in the traffic jams... not having the energy or time or knowledge to shop when there are special offers...
And so on.

Fortunately, I don't like cars at all. So, I don't really need to add that extra $$$ for fuel, tickets, parking meters, car insurance, car service, and last but not least - installments for the car itself. Trust me, it takes a big fraction of average polish family's income. Especially since people with ~500-700$ per month buy cars worth 30000$ on installments (talk about living beyond one's means. But hey, swank is all that matters -.-)
Although I want to get myself a nice motorbike instead but hey, it's wayyyyyyy cheaper.
