6 hours may or may not be enough, depends on the person. If you look at the quote I posted above you'll see that some people need 9 hours to sleep, otherwise they will feel tired every day.

It varies from person to person, some are fine with 5-6 hours, some have to sleep 9 hours. But, the average is 7-8 hours. So, if we want to talk about some statistics (like how much time does work take from your free time), we should take out the average. I mean of course there are some people who are 'lucky' and don't need to sleep that much, but there are also those that are less lucky who need 9 or more hours to sleep.

Try to meditate. Yeah you'll need lots of exercise and practice, but they say (even scientifical results) that 15 minutes of proper meditation is equal to 4 hours of sleep, in terms of body relaxing obviously. (not dreaming, for example)

what's sad is that sounds so true.

I wonder if many people are happy in their job?

Just because they HAVE to, you think it's fine?

So everything you are FORCED to do is ok?

Weird logic.

And people who have money work a lot, yes. But not necessarily the way ordinary people do, I mean, the whole boredom-in-work problem. Why work 8 hours if you are done after three? Why do you have to SIT there doing nothing and waiting for 8 hours to pass when there is NOTHING at all to do?

I like working, but in every job, it's like that. I am done fast and dying of boredom for the rest of the day, and what's worse, it totally screws my desire to do anything after work because I am too tired. Yes, tired of doing nothing, weird but meh, can't change it

Easy to explain. If you manage your workload in 3 hours, you'll either get paid only for three or you'll get the next workload. So going SLOOOOOWLY is guarding against that.

They should pay for the work well done, not for hours spent to do it. That would solve everything It wouldn't matter if you sit there 3 or 8 hours, and people wouldn't slack because they would have a motivation (to finish ASAP and have lots of free time )

I see that you didn't understand the capitalist system.

In any case there are lots of jobs where you cannot pay for the work done, but instead pay for the time you invest into it.

But that's only the lecturing time. I would be a bit more careful if I was you, and ask for the actual weekly working time. You should trust the system not to be THAT foolish, shouldn't you?

That would beat the purpose of getting the job done. There is a reason that certain proffesions take per assignment pay instead of hour pay.

Fortunately, my dad works at Warsaw Tech, so I know how the lecturer's work looks.

It's not hard. Sure, on start, after master degree but before PhD, you have more hours per week, you don't earn much and it's generally hard because you're new to it, but after - optimistically saying - two years, you get PhD, your worktime is reduced to 220 hours per semester and your payment reaches 1000$ per month. And it's no longer hard, the trick is to prepare a presentation once and stick to it through your entire, well, "career" there

A newbie's perspective:

A lot of people who complain about working are lazy. But it is nevertheless a valid concern. Sometimes the pursuit of material gain - or, indeed, material survival - is so powerful that it leaves little room for anything else, especially pursuits of a finer nature, such as those of the spirit. If one works all day and is tired at the end, then how can one have time to go to church/mosque/sinagogue?

Employers should be more lenient. But that's too much to hope for from the greedy rich.

Just two points here:

(1) To reinforce what was said earlier - if you are teaching a single class that meets 3 times a week for 1 hour each time, then that sounds like you only have to work 3 hours a week.  In truth, though, the actual lecture is a small fraction of the time necessary to teach a class.  In general, when I was teaching college level classes, I was spending upwards of 4-5 hours to prepare each 1 hour lecture.  Depending on the class size, grading can also take up an enormous quantity of time; at large universities you may have TAs to help with that, but genearlly if you are just in a lecturer's role, you won't have that benefit and you will have to do all the grading yourself.  Finally, there are a lot of office hours and time spent helping students.  So, a "3 hour work week" for a single class can easily turn into 20-25 hours.

(2) It's true that after you teach a class the first time, the amount of preparation you have to spend the next time around is less.  However, it most universities that I've been around, teaching duties are regularly rotated, so you won't teach the same course for more than 2-3 years in a row.  Additionally, you usually don't have complete autonomy and so the curriculem for a single class may change significantly from year to year depending on what the department chair feels you should be teaching.  More additionally, if you're in a lecturer's position, you most definitely won't be teaching the same class at the same university for even more than 2 years in a row, compounding this problem.  And finally, even if you COULD teach the same class over and over again every year, the professors who do not update, modify, and improve their lectures from year to year are usually the worst professors to be had.  I took classes from professors who used the same recycled material (and tests..) year after year and trust me - it shows.  If you actually want to do a good job as a teacher, you need to make new lecture materials each year.  Not only does the material actually change over time, but if you're good at what you do, you'll learn better ways to teach the material through experience.

So, in sum, being a lecturer is not easy work.  Certainly not the first time, and even when you've already taught the material before.
