The structure wouldn't be too constraining, and the Guild isn't going to have a monopoly on OSM debates. As for your posts being scored, you could just ignore it (though I don't know why you'd want to; you'd easily win without even trying).
But you don't have to participate formally. You can post in the Guild threads, and not feel too constrained. Just, when you post, make it more or less clear what your viewpoint is.

I'm not sure I should sign up for either at the moment. My amount of free time isn't enormous at the moment, since I just started a new job. I might be lurking for a while yet.

Let me try giving said critique again in the hopes it doesn't get removed again
Debates are, by essence, not about "winning" or "getting your right", that undermines the whole principle and purpose of debates.
Hence, the whole idea = epic fail.

If you want my two cents:
If you're going to set this up as some sort of formal debate contest/club/whatever, then you need to structure it as such. I don't see what the difference is between the first "official" thread and any other thread. If you're just going to let a thread amble about aimlessly, you don't need all the pretense of a formalized "debate guild". Normal threads do that anyway.
Rule # 1 should be: NO QUOTING.
Each person should get one post to lay out his arguments, a certain number of posts for rebuttal, etc., and then for conclusion. I don't know how you want to do it, but as it is now, I don't see the point of having some sort of guild. If you're going to structure a conversation, then structure it. Otherwise, it's just confusing baggage.

That's the plan for the next one, actually. We'll have more structure.

No, you're supposed to pick the winning side (everyone on that side gets a point), the best debater on the winning side (he/she gets an additional point), and the best debater on the losing side (he/she also gets a point).

No, I was on the "for" side and del_diablo was on the "against" side. I assume that's what you meant. Updating scores...
Anyone have a suggestion for the next topic?

Okay, who's up for a debate about the War in Iraq?
(I'm afraid we'll have a hard time finding somebody to argue for it.)

"Big" is an understatement. But it'd be nice to have a formal debate about it.

Okay, but we need to agree on some rules first.
How about everyone makes a relatively detailed first post, then are limited to 5 posts of debate, then a post of summary.

Well, I thought, that the first issue already was poor, but the second is even poorer.
A much more interesting issue to debate therefore seems to be the question whether Mvass will manage to outdo himself with the 3rd (and then probably last) one, finding a yet poorer, more boring issue for it.

Well, sorry, if you don't find that funny, but thread activity speaks volumes, and you know the old sayings, the laugh is always on the loser AND he who laughs last laughs not only loudest, but longest as well, so in the interest of a lively debate and more fun for all I decided that a little extra incentive for wise issue picks might be in order - you still may have the last laugh.
To give you a not so subtle hint, in my humble opinion each of Father's 19 suggestions is better than the 2 picked with the sole exception of whether US 9/11 reaction was too harsh.
A not so benevolent observer might think, that you are picking those issues deliberately to be the only one arguing and therefore getting points by default - on first look a subtle plot, but on second too obvious.

If you had any specific suggestions, such as from Father's list, you could've presented them when you had the opportunity.

You should be able to take a bit of good-humoured mocking without playing hurt. No one forced Mvass to start this, and Father already made 30 suggestions that would have lasted half a year - even with stronger standards you could easily have taken the complete second set and the complete 3rd set, the only poor one being 9/11. (The first set I consider too general.) There was no reason at all, why I should have pointed out issues when a plethora of good ones was already pointed out and I had a lot of fuss about this with Pandora anyway and basically for no good reason at all.
More so, I'd trust someone who voluntarily offered to do this thread being able to know a couple of good debating issues when he'd read them. Admittedly, chances were that Mvass wouldn't be able to resist the temptation and start with some economical issue, and, admittedly, one might have been warned by Mvass's confession that he doesn't watch much movies - which will include TV series, the promotion of which you can compare with this brandnew OSM Channel feature, The Debaters's Guild. With a little more TV experience he would of course have known that you don't promote a new series by making a rather dry and drab pilot, followed by a 1st episode regurgitating quite well known motives that all people know are leading into a one-way street, but instead you are well-advised to start with something like a fire-works that should set the tone - in this case something that would spawn a lively debate - which is after all the point of this.
I - no one, in fact - shouldn't even have to point this out, since it is fairly obvious - so when something HAS to point out the obvious, don't complain when a little good-humoured mocking is involved - you deserve it and should be able to take it with grace.

You have a point.
Next time, why don't you select the topic, if you know so much better than I do? Or would you rather run the whole thing?

Not at all.
Everyone can learn to select a gratifying topic.
Just don't be so testy. Instead, think about what anyone may have an opinion on which isn't too serious in nature and which will split the audience fairly evenly or at least have supporters on both side. War on Terror won't, and world currency won't either.
