Tolkien is overrated :(
LOTR is only famous and well received because it was the first real fantasy novel! I hate his writing style, the story is kinda of lame (good VS evil...), much of the background story is also lame (wtf maiar spirits/angels?).
Tolkien is so overrated 
I only like him for bringing Elves etc out of mythology and into fantasy books!!!
Please give Xerox some reasons why Tolkien and his super-badly-written books are so great! I dont understand, but perhaps I wil as I grow older.
I like my own fantasy novel better lolz

I agree. Tolkien is great, his novels are also more humanitarian than the todays creations. Every second fantasy author is tring to imitate him somehow, and every second modern author in the world is under his influence in some way.

Yeah I don't get your good vs evil argument here Xerox... doesn't the humans struggle against their own greed...? You know, like Boromir?
No one is pure good, well, except perhaps Frodo, and he almost gets corrupted too.
Ok Sam is pretty fluffy unicorn good.

Yeah Boromir is probably the best character in the whole story.
I only read two of the books but I watched all the movies... but who didn't...

I have to agree with xerox (did I really said that?  )
Tolkien is overrated, with VERY shallow black-or-white characters. There is absolutely NO psychology in the book. Everyone is either strong, valiant and honorable, or evil, cunning and miserable.
Except excellent narration in dungeons (Moria, Sheloba's lair) which REALLY is great for the spooky feeling and mysterious atmosphere, I think LOTR trilogy is utter crap.

Ah well. Everybody has his/her own opinion.
Been like 5 years since I last read the books... I'm sure I'd enjoy them more if I read them now... maybe I'd end up with DF's opinion. Who knows.
I still love the movies though. But I'm more of a manga guy than a book reader.
