Psychology isn't the only lens to use on a story. Much of LOTR reads like a historical narrative. There are only passing bits of human emotion, say with, the Rohan girl, or between Sam and Frodo. It isn't the only focus of the story.
Edit:
@Doomforge: I'm not sure Dragonlance is the best argument against Tolkien. You know how characters will act because of their alignments. You know monsters will fight because they are bad. The noble knight, the evil power-hungry mage?
@Xerox It is a myth that Tolkien is the start of Fantasy. Please tell me you have heard of the tale of The Princess and Curdie someone.

I said in my first post that I only like Tolkien because he brought in Elves etc into fantasy books and away from mythology only.
And yes, it is very boring that only like 10 people in the whole middle-earth knows magic
In my fantasy book, the Church becomes very angry when the humans learn magic (which is not supernatural in my book and has natural explainations) and there is lots of drama.
The main characters girlfriend turns against him because she is the high bishops daugther and loyal to the Church.
In a last effort to save their fate and power of the Kingdom, they study Dark magic to vanquish the magic-using heretics!
Warcraft lore cant be overrated because people dont yell this everyday: "Zomg LOTR lore is so awesome! Im in love with Tolkien!!! Bla bla bla!".
Thats overrated. People dont say that about Warcraft, but if they did Warcraft lore would be overrated too.
I like warcraft lore more because its modern fantasy and not black and white like LOTR. All races have their bad and good sides in Warcraft lore (except the Old Gods).
Even the Demons in Warcraft have a goal. They dont like the Titan way of Ordering worlds etc and would probably prefer if the Titans would let life evolve on its own.
Also I just cant stand all the ancient words and medieval writing style in the LOTR books! Otherwise I might have tried to read them.
I love the movies a lot. I like LOTR. Its among my favorite movies but its still ridicolously (lol spelling) overrated.
Its not that good!!!

No.
If we do, then please give a source.
This is the only Warcraft lore forum: forums.scrollsoflore.com
If you go there, you can see that its mostly whine about Varian waging war on the Horde, how lame it is that Arthas killed Ner'zhul and how bad all retcons are.

Xerox, the LotR background is inspiring, WoW lore is mostly... dumb, childish (in some aspects) and, well, boring. lacks any kind of characteristic meaning. However it is obvious I cannot argue further, if you find it "ok" and dare to compare it to LotR, discussion is over.
and the WoW background story is even lamer. So lame, in fact, that I could make an arcade game out of it!

Arrgh...
It's not black and white. Read Dagoth's post.
Quote: "Zomg LOTR lore is so awesome! Im in love with Tolkien!!! Bla bla bla!"
I fail to see how this makes something overrated...
EDIT: Ok, I'm going to read the whole Warcraft background story on the official WoW site... then I'll be back with my opinion. I've been a bit prejudicious about it so far. Time to make a change.

I disagree that Tolkien Lore is overrated. It's quite a deep and exact universe, and surpasses any other Lyrical Universe (Including Colony, Ashan or Harry Potter)
EDIT: let alone the Warcraft Universe, now that is what I call "overrated"

Xerdux, it's the time for you to turn back to Heroes and others games/story of this kind
without Tolkien, I think the game Heroes never it would have existed
(good/evil) pattern is simple, primitive, yes, but that works !
what is the H5's campaign story, already? Haven vs Inferno? with others factions around?
or a good action movie with full explosion and the hero must safe the girl....simple but sometimes so funny..
....

Ok... the titans part was pretty interesting... but then it went completely non-interesting with Sargeras...
Kil'jaeden the Deceiver? Archimonde the Defiler? What kind of names is this? It feels childish.
Going to read on... now it's on to the old gods thingy. I'm not impressed so far. And even though it seems like a dark and nice fantasy world, WoW destroys this feeling with its colours...

actually that's what sucks, and I say that, because it's the first to come to mind when you read it (before the Demon thingie). It's like made up by a kid without deep meaning behind it or inspiring.

Lotr is superior in names to really everything. Elvish names sound dreamy (Glorfindel, Rivendel, Lothlorién, Elessar, Elendil, Gandalf), Dwarven sound stout and sturdy (Thorin, Durin, Dáin, Azaghâl*), while the names of Evil things sound very menacing (Morgoth, Ungoliant, Shelob, Sauron, Saruman...)
*Azaghâl IS a Dwarf, according to wiki ^^
Sounds a lot better than Kil'Jaeden, Illidan, Hermione Granger or smth

@Death: Yes, I would've thought that they would go a bit deeper than "Titans were here, they did this and everything became perfect."
And the text doesn't imply any mystery so far either, how does Azeroth know of this? Is it a religion or is it completely true?
I'll be reading on... I already feel bored but anyway

@ lex: There's a reason behind that...
O-sounds (like in Morgoth, Sauron, the word 'war') are very threatening and dark sounds, for instance
Tolkien was a linguist at university level, so I think he knew how to make these names sound like they do...

So... much... text...
I'm 10 000 years before the first Warcraft game now...
Right now, it feels just like I first thought it was, a whole bunch of ideas just piled together to form something that kinda looks like a story... arrgh.
But the thing that annoys me most so far is still the names...
Like Malfurion... yeah, sounds cool. But Malfurion Stormrage? Feels childish...
*continues to read*
