WHAT!?
The movies are awesome!
They are like the best I know.
Unfortunaly the books are not
I tried to read them but I just cant stand his style of writing! If somebody translated it into accurate and modern swedish and using - instead of >> or "" in dialouges I woild read it.
Its almost like a poem and I hate those, they are so lame.

using the - instead of "" is just lame. - Is the most sucky form for writing which I know of when telling about a dialouge, if you check most of the books that's out there, >> and "" are the most common thing to use, you must have a hard time finding a book to read, huh?
btw, the movies phails compared to the book. They take themselves to much freedom and changes to much.

Quote: Lexxan, I'm sorry, but that is completely ridiculous. Let's say there is an album a lot of people are listening to full of rapture. You go to Youtube and listen to the first song. After 2 minutes you find it boring beyond belief and you switch to song 2. Same result. 30 seconds into song #3 you decide to call it an album and leave. It's just not your kind of music and you don't want to waste your time with it. And you have enough reasons to go with: texts were about things that don't interest you; music was arranged in a way you don't like, featuring instruments or rhythms you don't like, having no discernible structure, are not or too epic or WHATEVER the reason.
No, the above is truly ridiculous. Are you seriously saying that you would dismiss an album after having heard just parts of three songs?! How can you possibly judge an album on such a small basis?
There are many albums that I have had to listen to many times (from one end to the other) before I really came to like them. And perhaps there are one or two songs that I still don't like. But I have come to like the rest a lot. Sometimes you need to be open-minded an put an effort into it, and at some point you will think "hey, this is actually pretty good".
I'm not saying that you haven't given it a try. But how much have you read?

Lol I read Harry Potter and all Warcraft books in english but I think LOTR has to hard english for a 13yr old
But soon its my birthday and that means you will all have to agree with my opinions!!!1
But I would have liked four movies in LOTR. Two Towers should have been the third and in the middle that Angmar VS Elven VS Goblin war in the north should have been.
I only know that because I played Battle of Middle-Earth II.
In school they learn us to use - instead of " ".
Im writing my book with - . But it will change to "" if its released in other countries. All the names in the book must work in english too.
(Silverstaden/Silver City, Nordmarkerna/Northlands, Skyffelget/Shovelhorn etc).

Because Tolkien was an expert in language, and wrote in old style. Also he started writing during World War 1.

In norwegian school they learn us to use "" and not -
And everyone knows that Norway > Sweeden

Not everybody is going to like the same things. Tolkien is not Overrated most people have even forgotten or never knew he exsisted until the movies came out. Are the movies overrated..probably. They were good, but deffinately no where near how good the books were. To each their own, though.
Tolkien is not 1/10 as overrated as WoW, however. Not even close.

Actually almost all of the people I knew growing up (of the type of people that actually read books)had read it. Even then I remember it being held in reverence much the same way as in this thread. It's true that the movies made it aware to the other 70% of the public but I'm not sure that it actually made any new fans...(In other words, I haven't heard of anybody coming to the books after seeing the movies)
I'm curious what LOTR fans think of the Silmarillion, which I found to be completely unpenetrable.

Well though I like the books I don't know if I qualify as a fan..but the Silmarillion was much harder to read and understand. It was over my head, and I read Shakespeare (well a few at least). At least it was at the time...
And I don't hold them in reverence, but they are not overrated by any deffinition of the word.
