I'm not sure. Question would be also if the different races originate from different speciae, so to speak, or if they have a common predecessor.

What I mean is, have white men always been white, or is the whitenes something that has come from moving out of the equatorial zone and into the temperate or arctic regions.

If you look at mankind it's a bit more diverse than just african, caucasian and asian. You have hispanic, arabic, indesian, innuite etc. etc. that all look different. Some have larger skin, some darker, some larger eyes, some are taller or shorter etc.

It seems pretty much a gradual differentiation. Does this simply come from "crossbreeding", or are all these evolved from some common native human prototype (now probably long extinct)?

Yes there are breed's of humans, but it's not something biologists talk about in public because the politically correct crowd will go into shock.

Most likely the are one, since they all are Homo sapiens. however there is a theory that the inuits were Homo neanderthalensis in the past.

One of the old human speciae spread all over the world and slowly it turns into different races.

According to evolution theory one species but splited by geographic object is going to change it's evolution way. So if one past of animals of humans cross, lets say the "great mountain" and there, in this new home it's pretty hot they are going slowly to change in order to survive. Thats where the races came from. If the process continue they will one day be different species. However the mankind isn't that old and the evolution need more time, and in the modern world the human evolution is so slow that it almost don't exist. That's because you don't need to make your body different to survive, you can... change your clothing or visit the hospital, the animals can't do it (wild).

Yes, some call them "subraces", and they are part of the bigger ones.
