What's the difference between True FF™ and untrue Final Fantasy? Is mvass some kind of a J-RPG reactionary? 
I for one would like to say that they seriously dropped the ball with 10 but I hesitate.
I liked the new gameplay elements in number 10 and I must confess that I was quite blown away by its magnificense back in the day. Now when I look at it my main gripes come from the akward dialogue which I believe to be only boosted by something that smells of bad voice mixing and timing.
The voice actig featured in the game increased the amount of work for the localization team and also served as a pretty souveir limit. When working with text boxes it leaves more room for the translation and allows for more of the player's interpretation where as with the voiceovers the translation is limited by the timing of lines and lipflaps and the acting might turn out bad. Or that's atleast how I imagine it would be.
I hear that in 13 the lipsync was redone for the localized version.

You know, the Final Fantasy games might be what you could call "art" games, as their biggest saving grace has for long been the art design, music, story and the atmosphere they create for the game world. But then again, that's basically what a roleplaying game is supposed to have to immerse the players. I guess my point is: Who can honestly say that they like the Final Fantasy games for their fast paced strategic gameplay and innovation in game design?

None! Final Fantasy is all about graphics and a little bit of gameplay.. But then again, the gameplay must be good enough in ff games, cuz i hear alot of times that graphics is just a bonus..
I PLay ffxiii on ps3, and its fun, and beautiful, so i guess that the gameplay is great too.

I played all the Final Fantasy games up to FF6, I never got a Playstation or playstation 2 fast enough to buy FF7, and when I finally got one I never found any place that sells FF7...which is the only remaining FF game I would like to play. So yeah.

The final fantasies have always been just a little ahead of their time. Normally graphic wise, gameplay wise, and element wise (songs, etc). What makes them unusal, is that they don't keep everything as is from one game to another. Gameplay varies, and they try new combat systems out. Sometimes they hit on something so epic, especially with the songs, that you wonder why they would 'fix' something not broken however.
Not even Might and Magic has given Final Fantasy a run for it's money. The final fantasy franchise is the ONLY roleplaying game franchise in the top 10 games of all time (number of sales that is). Despite the fact that very rarely do two people agree which they like best. While VII seems to be leading the pack, many don't like it at all, but prefer one of the other versions.
Even though the story is a bit redundant in each (relatively unknown group tries to stop big baddies (usually part of some corporation) )they get you involved with the characters. Just look at the reaction when just ONE of the characters died. It caused a LOT of attention for that version, because people CARED about the characters. Even if that means they cared enough to HATE the characters. .
Adding to this is epic music. The final fantasy franchise has some of the best music in a game. Sometimes redundant, and you want to mute it for fights and such..but (!) there are times that you just don't care about long sequences of animation because the great music is playing!.
Can it use some tweaks? Yeah. The cut scenes can be long (on the plus side you get some great music during these..), the huge swords are a few of the things that make you go 'hmm', and the androgynous characters can be a bit much..however (!) in a way they are icons OF Final Fantasy..and would the game be the same with out them?
Now FF has not had all hits (Final Fantasy XI was a huge flop), nor is it the perfect franchise. However, it is an icon in the Roleplaying Genre for a reason.

Reading what you've written Mytical, it seems that you've never played Final Fantasy. The gameplay was stuck in some strange pocket dimension for the longest time. Only now has it started to recover and even now it's the nineties all over again.

To be sure, they had games with identical gameplay, not every one was unique. However, many have totally different gameplay then the one before it. Which is one of the things that make it kinda set out. Cause they took something that wasn't broke and tried to fix it.
Edit: And besides XII, XIII, and XIV I've played them all. Even the tactics ones, the unfortunate dirge of Cerebus (ugh), and the online one (for a very very short time).
Edit: I guess I should specify combat mechanics..might be a bit confusing other wise.

So did I but I'm not too impressed as of late.
The production values are through the roof - story (more or less), sound, translation, graphics etc - but what's that ever going to mean if gameplay consists of NOTHING but boss fight-> exposition-> boss fight-> ad infinitum?

You're right, but that's apples VS oranges. Western RPGs can't really be placed side-by-side compete with Eastern ones.
I'm no expert but something like Dragon Quest would make for a much better cross-comparison than Might and Magic.

And, I'm quite partial to Dragon Quest myself. I actually enjoy it more than Final Fantasy.
(Although we all know that FF7 was something else altogether.  )

From what you describe, mr Cepheus, it seems that the gameplay is basically the same. In fact it sounds even better! No more grinding, just the tactical and fascinating unique boss encounters!
Final Fantasy basically is a visual novel with a bunch of interactive monster encounters.
Edit: And the meta game that goes behind the monster encounters.
Edit2: A cinematic visual novel at that!
Edit3: You know what? It's really not that much like a visual novel due to the fact that sometimes you can control where the characters on screen go to. Sure, the movement often comes off as a formality between the pieces of plot, but there is the dungeon crawling and sometimes you can stray from the path to do other stuff.
Edit4: I recently picked up an used copy of Final Fantasy XIII.
The story can be summarized thusly: There are these god creatures governing the people and during a nice day one of them decides to give the main cast magic powers, making them his own personal jews. But as luck would have it our heroes happen to live smack dab in the middle of cyberpunk Nazi Germany and so the adventure begins.
It kind of bothers me a bit that the entire main cast looks like they are professional models and that their teeth are glissening white though we never see them brushing their teeth. They don't eat or go to the bathroom either. They do sleep however and in one scene we see Snow (a character) drinking soda from a can.
Another thing that I thought to critizise for a bit was that even though the actors do their job well and the lipsync was redone for the localization, the game still has the shadow of a game translated from Japanese looming over it. You know why? I'll tell you why! It's because of just a little thing. For you see, one of the main characters, Snow, is engaged to the sister of another main character and as Japanese tradition has it, the relatives of your fiancee are to be treated as if they were your own. So as an effect Snow calls Lightning "sister" several times to wich Lightning replies: "Don't call me your sister!" This is a remnant of the original script rearing its ugly head in a rather obnoxious way because in Japanese relatives are called by their relation to you instead of their name as in English. (Of course the exception is made when it comes to mommy and daddy.)
This may seem petty to you, especially if you've played the game and found much more glaring flaws, but damn it, this is serious business! Clearly there are themes in this work wich are not apparent outside of the context of the culture in wich it was made!
As for the battle system, it almost feels like your own input is not that significant, but still when you get your ass kicked you have no one to blame but yourself. It's a bit odd, but I think I'm getting the hang of it.

Sales wise, Dragon Quest isn't even a drop in the bucket if compared to Final Fantasy (or at least last I checked, guess you never know ). I am a big Dragon Quest fan myself. Right now I am playing Dragon Quest IX. However..it has never had the effect on my that Final Fantasy has. Every free moment I had was spent trying to conquer the final fantasies I played. Dragon Quest..I play it, but it does sit a lot. Just doesn't have that 'hook' that makes me want to see MORE.
That is just my opinion, however. Dang, now I want to get a PS3 as there is supposed to be an online option to play Final Fantasy VII.

Were I to be appointed with the task of translating the game, I'd make Lightning tell Snow to call her "Neiti Farron" (Miss Farron). It would give her character that extra edge of sounding like a complete tool.
That gave me some great(stupid) ideas. Thanks dude.

OT: I started with DQ III, which has the same class system as DQ IX. (albeit, with less classes; there were only 8 back then, down from 12 in DQ IX)
I got DQ IX last week, it's SO FUN!
@Joonas: Maybe not THAT short, but I think you may be right. It's easily beatable the day you buy it if you have a general idea of the plot sequence, or so I've read (haven't played it myself either).
Back on-topic: Since I have an XBOX360, I'm torn on whether to get FF13 for it, or sell the darned clunker...lost most of my games when I moved to a different house, and XBOX360 are WAY too expensive, even in a videogame industry that's pushing the minimum price of new games up almost yearly (with some notable exceptions, but still.)

I finished Final Fantasy XIII like a week or two ago now. I have mixed feelings. On one part I kind of enjoyed it for what it was where as on another part it feels a bit tacked on to call it Final Fantasy, but it would propably be even more akward if it wasn't called Final Fantasy as it's clear to see that it totally is Final Fantasy and removing the icons would make it "wannabe-Final Fantasy."
I think this is a souveir symptom of not knowing when to stop. Final Fantasy IX already was kind of final in its even heavier reference to the past titles of the franchise as if to say: "Good times huh? We'll miss it, but we'll go out with a blast, dude!"
Final Fantasy has been dead for a while now. Time to move on guys.
