Civilization 5 is in the making
Excuse me if this is old news, but I'm pretty excited, I just found a handful of screenshots from upcomming Civ 5. I didn't even know it was in the making!
Given that Civ 4 is the best game ever in my book, I'm pretty psyched to see what they've come up with this time. On thing is revealed: Map will be Hex grid for the first time in Civ history!
A short description in Danish and a couple of screenshots

Not really hyped for it.
They have removed all bunch of stuff, made some heavily OP Civs (curse you Japan!) and ofc kept most of the crappy border system.
Yay

I'm glad Catherine keeps re-affirming her status as Resident Glam Goddess. (Take that, WHO ZETIAN!)
I'm curious about the Hexagonal system, the amoeba-like town-expansion, the "no more than one unit per hex" thing and the Neutral States. It should make for a whole lot of interesting, new developments.
Of course, it could ALSO end up that Firaxis made too many changes and Civ 5 goes down the drain like H4... but let's hope that Won't be the case.

I am. I ordered new content for my PC to be ready for release, but they have delayed delivering.

Finally got rid of the squares, freecivs got hexes for ages and it's a lot more natural.
I'm interested in how the battles are implemented. If it's just like old except one unit per hex it will sucks. The neighbouring hexes should be taken into account somehow. Otherwise cavalry and later tanks are going to steamroll everything to oblivion.

Depends on how the adjacent hexes are taken into account, in theory you COULD build a deep defence strong enough to repel them but I think we're finally going to get to do some real Blitzkrieg. Bombard the roads free with artillery and commando panzers straight through all the enemy towns in one turn.

If they get multiple attacks per turn promotion like in Civ4+4 moves per turn, Deep Defense is going to fail.
I also wonder how naval battles will work now.

What I wonder is how are they going to keep the attacker from having a huge advantage over the defender. Without other troops on the same hex to defend the wounded, it's going to be a massacre no matter how I look at it.
Unless they throw in something like can't move through hexes occupied by other units but then it's just going to suck.

There is apparently going to have a lot of terrain type and the terrain modifiers are heavy.
I think it would make sense to have ranged defenders counterattack to any ranged bombardment.
Im pretty sure they would have made new modifiers to units, besides STR.

I'm curious about how the hex grid will work out - but in the end, I doubt it will make that much of a difference. I think the one-unit-per-tile idea will have serious impact on the gameplay - I'm thrilled about this, since the latest installments, I haven't really liked war in Civ, because amassing those huge stacks means compromising all other aspects of development too much to be worth it imo.
I liked the religion feature of Civ 4, but it was probably a bit imbalanced, so maybe it's good they abandoned it. First of all, it was very annoying that often it would have devastating impact on your diplomacy ranking if you differed in religion with your neighbours (a -5 penalty was frequent, and that was pretty much more than any other single feature). Also, being the founder of two or more religions could turn into real money-machine, which was sort of imba.
I'm a bit woried about the limited-ressource thing, however. I remember in Civ 3 ressources were a real pain, and when favoring a peaceful play style, it's annoying if you're forced into war.

Well Civilization is a game about ... our civilizations, basically. What that means is you start out in ancient times by playing a civilization and founding your capital city (Rome for Romans, Beijing for Chinese, Moscow for Russia etc.).
Having a city grants you access to two things: Ressources and Trade. Ressources can be used to build either military units (for protection/war against other civilizations), for domestic units (like Settlers to found more cities) or for buildings to improve your city (Library, Market, Barrack, etc.). Trade can be used for Gold (to fund your buildings and armies) and for Research.
Research is a key feature, as it allows you to develop your civilization. You start out at stone-age level and have to discover The Wheel, Pottery, Hunting, Agriculture, Bronze Working, etc. etc. Ech new technology will allow you new options - better military units, or new buildings in your cities to improve those - even great wonders can be build once, like the Pyramids or the Great Wall.
So the point of the game is your up in a race against the other civilizations - have to become more advanced than them, or they'll crush you with superior armies. In order to do this, you have to carefully balance your strategic needs between finance, science, expansion and military size. Building new cities means more ressources, trade and science, but also costs money and means you need more military to defend (which again costs more money) - so you have to weigh your options at every step.
Which the core concept is simple, the game is extremely complex as you develop from Stone Ages right up to Space Age. The idea of the game is to give a "real world simulation", i.e. actually reflect the factors like warfare, diplomacy, trade, imperism etc. that has influenced civilizations throughout time.
It is, in short, the greatest strategy game ever.

Man you just found out about this? Maybe I should keep a thread of upcoming games XD.
Heres my current list
Civ 5
Fallout New Vegas
Little Big Planet 2
Dragonage 2
FFXIV (Ive played the beta though and don't really like it)
Neverwinter
SC2 Heart of the Swarm
Im also hoping for a new rainbow 6 game and TES V. TES V is undoubtedly going to be announced within a year, and come out very shortly after that. There are rumors of it being 2010, but I'm expecting late 2011.
