I would definitely add Longbowmen and Chu-Ko-Nus to that list. I have been defeating HORDES of enemy units just using those two.
Conquistadors are also broken like hell, especially on Archipelago maps.
But in the areas I mentionned, the game has definitely been balanced and improved.
I would also recommend the DLC Civs. Babylon and the Inca are two great all round civs which are very fun to play with. Mongolia is cool as well, but beware of a Mongol AI however, as they will definitely target you if your military is weaker than theirs. Spain is nothing special, but the Conquistadors rock, and for that alone your should give them a shot. Polynesia simply DOMINATES aquatic maps, only the Ottomans OR Spain can match them. Denmark on the other hand is fairly unremarkable.

That's good news. I read some stuff at civfanatics and it seems they fixed a lot of the issues that made this game a pile of poo when it was released. It's still a shame it took a year for them to do so... but better late then never
Perhaps I'll give it another try

They need to add a Canada Civ finally =p
There is a pretty large mod for Civ 4 where the old Hockey night in Canada tune is the music that plays during diplomacy when you're at war with them too. Pretty funny.
If I remember the unit voices were Bob and Doug McKenzie. Of course that part makes the mod based on largely untrue stereotypes, but it's funny nonetheless =)

I'm talking about 5. I've never played any other.
Maybe I'll give it a try sometime. After all I don't think we'll see Heroes until 2012. So there will be time

Weird - then I do in fact have the latest build. Must be someone who messed up with some of those mods then. Thanx.

I just finished a King difficulty play-through with the Americans. I won a science victory in 2020 with a score of 1934. My empire was 4 massive cities, with Washington itself having a population of 39.
Egypt and Spain shared my continent to the northeast and southeast, respectively. Isabella declared war on me about 5 times but could never breach my defenses. She had to invade through a mountain pass along my southern border or else land on my southern beaches. But I had those guarded with crossbowmen with some melee units and later with the higher tech ranged/melee units.
Egypt's demeanor was "guarded" for most of the game but they never declared war on me. Egypt and Spain did fight several times. His option would have been to invade through about a 4 octagon opening in the mountains to my northeast.
Hiawatha was the "runaway" civ with the hightest score while I have the second highest score. I could easily have won a cultural victory since I had obtained 5 of the policy trees.
I never produced either of the unique American units. Riflemen come so quickly after minutemen that I don't see the point. My little empire had no oil so no B-17s for me either.

lol America sucks so much.
I currently doing my very first *serious* game as Siam, Prince difficulty on a Fractal map.
I'm situated in an area with PLENTY of resources. I have got at least 4 plots of Sugar, two Silks, two Spices, two wines, a Gold, About TWENTY horses and twelve Iron, already worked and harvested by my busy workers. I do hope this doesn't mean that I'll end up without Coal or Aluminium in the late-game though.
Mongolia is the runaway Civ on tha map so far (as they have the second largest empire after myself, the largest population/science AND the largest army AND build wonders en masse, as if they were Ancient Rome). Luckily however, Mongolia occupies the other half of the continent, near to the secondary great power of Russia.
I have no near neighbours. Japan can be found somewhere in the north, America to the south-west, The Iroquious to the west (although they are quite far away), and finally Spain to the south.
Luckily I have signed DoFs with both Iroquois and Japan, making sure those two Warmongers won't attack me (although Hiawatha is "AFRAID" of me atm).
America is an absolutely pain in the neck, having attacked me TWICE in thirty turns, and unprovoked on both occasions. I have come to the conclusion that I absolutely LOATHE Washington in this game. Such a self-righteous, holier-than-thou twat, rambling on about Liberty, yet at the same time he ATTACKS me for no reason in my own territory. I know it all random programming and all... but it is SUPER annoying. How I despise him.
Spain, my fourth neighbour is, like usual, weak and barely expands (like... what is up with THAT??), leaving me with plenty of space to build future cities.
Overall I have built a strong military to fend off the hordes of Warriors Washington consistently sends in my direction to pester me, and currently control 9 cities.
The only issue is Money. I have barely to purchase my units (as they get encircled and killed rapidly by the American hordes) AND to fund my good relationships with Belgrade and Quebec City. I'll need even more Cities (and TRs) soon, because otherwise I'll soon run out of credits
some additional details:
Policies are: Tradition: 2 - Liberty: 4 - Patronage: 1
I control the Chichen Itza and Stonehenge wonders.
Currently researching Construction, and I'll be doing Chivalry next, for the Imba Elephants Siam gets.... Washington will never know what hit him
All of this in 300 AD
I think I'm settled for a great game

In Civ 4, Isabella just plain attacked everybody she layd her eyes on, given half a chance. I wonder if it's the same in Civ 5, haven't had so much experience with her yet, and I normally play random personalities.

I just tried a game with the new patches, and I must say most things are pretty smooth. I still run one mod which makes bonus ressources tradable and make them work more like in Civ 4 (that is deer, wheet, cattle, sheep, etc.). I think most things run very well, altohugh Infantry still are imbalanced (if you get them before enemy, you can pretty much trample them).
There are a couple of minor things that should be tweaked (for instance city ranged radius should increase to 3 once you get the ability to build Artillery (first range 3 unit). And I think late game needs an overhaul a bit like the Coorperations thing from Civ4 Beyond The Sword - I really think that was a very interesting addition to the game, and nice to have an alternative use for great people. Wouldn't mind to see something like the religions back either, but they were imba like hell in Civ4.

No, I think I got like 5 of the 7 at most, but even if you only had 2 or 3, that was imbalanced as hell. And what was worse, if you didn't get a single, you were royally screwed, excuse my french. And yay for Spiral Minaret wonder, most imbalanced ever.

Seriously, I was able to buy everything (but wonders ofc), I can say in that game I never spent a hammer on regular things after I got the last shrine built.

Have any of you guys tried the new Korea DLC - is it me, or this the only faction that actually has a unique unit that is WORSE than the one it replaces? I mean, they have this Turtle Ship or whatever, which replaces the Caravel. And whereas the Caravel goes into all waters (which is what makes it such an epic unit and Astronomy so important) the Turtle Ship doesn't. I don't know if it has higher combat stats than the Caravel or not, but it seems like overall a huge disadvantage.
And wasn't there a Hoover Dam wonder or something in the original Civ5 build? Now it seems there isn't one, but maybe I'm thinking back to Civ4.

I refuse to pay for DLC civs so can't comment too much on that.
except the turtle ship sounds like a medieval ironclad? And the fact that Korean science bonuses sound pretty cool.
Also there was no hoover dam
