Actually the thing is, there's no whole picture anymore, it IS a reboot. So yeah, Dark Elves are essential to Dungeon because it's their town now. They are using creatures, factions and stuff from old games to let people know this is still the Heroes they love and they don't want to lose old fans, but in terms of factions, you can say it is indeed a reboot. Because now the race comes first, not the town itself. There are some nods to older games, like now Harpy going back to Stronghold like it was in H4, or how Academy is a copy of the H3 incarnation without the Naga but I guess there's no such thing as essential now...
I don't like how the Lamasu has the old hag face.

I think it's good like its done now. I mean, first the Lamasu is dead and when you're dead you don't look like 20 and second the Lamasu is an failed experiment, so this is another reason why the Lamasu looks like this

Well, not all females are beautiful... And also the Lamasu should be evil, gorgeous and badass and it is. There are enough other females in the game that are good-looking. (yes, Breeder...)

It was actually called that way in some regions so it isn't really a retcon.
Only Europe and some other parts used old name version for H5 due to fan protest.

In terms of factions HoMM4 was more of a "Reboot" than HoMM5, but no one is calling that so.. in HoMM5 while some races really changed, like Stronghold going to Orcs, Dungeon to Dark Elves, or Fortress changing entirely, there were still "copies" from old games (HoMM3 in particular) like Haven, Academy, Necropolis.. In terms of gameplay exept initiative and skill system everything remained exactly the same!
You are saying that they "don't want to lose old fans", but i will put it the way that "they are trying to gain new fans".. and Reboot is not only factions and lore, but gameplay mechanics, skill system and literally everything or majority of the things..
BUT what i am afraid of that Heroes6 can really become a Reboot! and it's quite a risky thing, cuz if the game fails, it may mean death of HoMM series, and THAT is scary!!! Can't say now, will have to see when the game is released.. and i pray that dev's will do a great job and everyone will love new Heroes6..! let's hope for better!!!

Yeah I get that, I meant I preferred the way it looks on the artwork. But on the catapult screenshot it looks good anyway.
DarkLord: you're going in circles. It doesn't matter that H5-6 has the exact same game mechanics, in terms of storyline and universe, it is a reboot, whether you like it or not. Like I said, if they are copying from old games it's just not to alienate fans who've known Heroes before 2006. It's their right to say Dungeon belongs to Dark Elves now, and it's also their right to release a game like H6 that (most likely) doesn't have Unicorn, Hydra, Black Dragon, Elven Archer, Gargoyle etc.

Don't you think that this is what NWC also did by creating blueskinned, finned lizardmen archers? Even though if they were just one unit...
Now, for the first time, they don't seem to be copying anymore any of these games. So, rejoice!
