Most people get super-into the crafting and enchanting system and end up absolutely godlike because of it.

Maybe Poly has just managed to not choose all the OP skills, which is kinda admirable.

But if Poly isn't having fun...

Poly, assuming the problem is with your gear and you don't want to do Smithing/Enchanting, have you put any Perk points to boost your armor up that way?

I leveled Pickpocket, Lockpicking, Sneak, Smithing and Alchemy mainly. Smithing's at 85-ish atm, I have some gear, but not much cause I don't like Enchanting so I've got two looted smithing pieces providing 30%-ish boost total, plus I made a 70%-ish potion when improving armor and crossbow,(I've gone light armor side up to advanced armors, plus dwarwen for the xp from bows) bringing up both to 120-something My best gear atm is improved DB set(not the ancient one). I have no resistances.

EDIT: Of course I could do the fortify restoration loop, but that takes away the point of the game

I guess it's something with legendary mode. I never played it myself.. I just have it on normal mode and use mods to adjust the balance in a way I like.

Bethesda's idea of difficulty is often just to make things have tons of HP and resistances, just wastes your time really.

AWW YEAH YOU'RE IN FOR IT NOOW

...

First off, before you do ANYTHING: Tutorial

For general gameplay balance, which is what you seem to be after... I recommend SPERG combined with Duel - Combat Realism. Will make your game challenging and offer more interesting builds. Add Revenge of the Enemies (no scripts!) to make your enemy encounters much more varied and exciting.

What's great about these mods are that they are lightweight (you'll realize how important this is after screwing your game up for the zillionth time) and modular.

Avoid Skyrim Redone like the plague unless you enjoy installing a metric ****ton of compatibility patches and have to run .bat files everytime you install well... anything.

The problems with the so called "balance" mods is that they raise difficulty for all enemies, and depending on your level. While on paper it sounds good, having to shoot 10 arrows to kill a bandit at level 1, then having to shoot 10 arrows to kill same bandit when you are level 60 is not balance, but boring game.

That's the problem with open world mods: if you don't restrict some areas and high level monsters, then everything will have to level with the player, so the percentage of damage required to kill something does not change.

Combat realism would be great mod. But reloading takes up to one minute even on best configs. Death is time penalizing.

10 arrows to kill a bandit at all levels? GIMME GIMME GIMME NAO!

At low levels- 20 minutes to kill a bandit
At high levels- 1 second

Neither extreme is satisfying.

Yeah, this is vanilla you're playing. I use many battle mods, but they do all same thing-beside offering a large variety of encounters-, mobs level with you.

However the quantity of interesting mods helps so you end by ignoring pointless battles.

@Ad: Sorry but duel combat realism sounds scary as hell. I'm gonna skip that. Not looking for varied ways to die, and it doesn't sound like I'd be able to adapt.
Also, if you can help me with another thing, you'd be a lifesaver. Is there any way to optimize Skyrim to run on low-end comps besides vanilla options? As it is, it's ugly but runs OK, just load times are loooooooooooong.

If you just want 1 mod to overhaul gameplay, try skyre (skyre also makes things really hard, you're probaby gonna have to try practising your swordsmanship with mudcrabs). Though, I've heard people complain about how annoying it is, so take with grain of salt.

EDIT: adrius advises against it, because, like me, he's got 70+ mods installed.
