2.5d is an extremely promising concept.
I'm holding out hope that these will actually be the best town screens that the series has seen yet.
(Even better if we get ones for Academy, Sylvan, Dungeon...ahem)

So no news yet
Quote: Hi Yall.
Long time, no see? Why? Because I have not played HoMM6 yet. Why not?
No town screens.
So tell Ubisoft that I've been playing HoMM since I got the PC Gamer demo in the days of coconut monkey in the 90's. There isn't much more satisfying in this game than to have a castle built, shipyard and relic included, and just sit and look as the music plays.
I was going to buy this game day one, but then I heard about no town screens.
No town screens? No thanks. No purchase.
LOL man, SAME thing here, but I was seduced by the music.
Quote:
as for how the things are at the moment
i would make a guess that there won't be any Town-Screens untill the 1st expansion
and TownScreens will be a feature to boost the sales for expansion
thats what it seems
p.s. and personally TownScreens in Expansion will totally convince me to buy it!
Yea, sadly, I think this is what will happen.
Thanks for keeping us informed, even with an "soon as possible" info hehe

For me the best looking town screens would be the combination of: graphic quality and detail of heroes 5, locked camera (but with little better position) of heroes 6, building design and art style of heroes 3, and units implementation of heroes 2. Well, a man can dream.

I'm doing a lot of modding atm and found an unfinished town screen/window in the files and put it in the game. It doesn't change except when you buy special buildings, then their glows/light effects appear (as you can see in the screenshot).
No other faction has an additional town window model/file. Also keep in mind that there's a WIP screenshot of the real Necro town screen in the files.
Also there's an empty Academy section in the files aswell as the unfinished Desert terrain in the map editor.
There was also artwork of that unreleased dynasty weapon which looks like its related to Academy. So yeah, there you probably have the next DLC/expansion faction (pretty sure they are working on Academy right now actually, was probably originally planned to be a sixth faction)

makes sense - academy to me always fitted the story the most - since we already got Necro ... and Lemasu (originaly Academy creature if i understand lore right - which im not 100% sure that i do).
I bet town screens will come together with new faction - afterall it would be practical - but if Academy is DLC then we might see Town screens in free patch even - there's hope yet (altho my opinion leans toward expansion - so they can implement all missing features together in one big bundle + add new stuff)
anyways nice job with town window editing I myself am interasted to try it (altho i have a lot about modding to learn as my knowledge so far reaches to map editor basics )
is there a way to change town picture btw ? is it hard to learn ?

well its hard to create a fully functioning town screen from the start, but putting it in game is really easy
you need the .orc editor and then you go into Entities -> Necropolis (in this case) -> Buildings -> Necropolis and change the file that makes the town screen appear in the game.

I want town screens with arts comparable to homm 5 and music comparable to homm 4.
They better make those, and should consider this priority (along with the academy faction)

I'll be eaten for saying this but I don't care about screens...
I love them but what I'm gonna do with them when my game crashes irrepairably on month 1 or when I can only play a few factions and get bored?
Now devs are gonna use this as an excuse, like, "we are working on townscreens as everyone think they are priority, fixing the game and adding content will come later".

Hardly. The game was planned to have that much content and most likely the addition of more features is also following the same initial plan. They are not in a hurry neither to fix the thing, nor to expand it.

It's strange. Many people are complaining about how townscreens can make your computer crash. It never happened to me in any homm title, even the 5. And my computer isn't that fast.
Of course, you shouldn't play a game like this on a windows 2000.
ANyway, I think they are what has made this franchise unique, gives it it's spirit.

I am in love with the dungeon townscreen that is recently added to the artwork thread.
I used to care neither one way or the other. I was annoyed by all the nerdrage it caused, but I could have lived without full townscreens. I enjoyed 4 and those were pretty bad as well.
But now, I WANT town screen, because I WANT the new Dungeon Screen.

Actually it looks pretty much the same as the Heroes V incarnation, except maybe for the mushrooms...
Do have in mind though that it's just an illustration, not an actual town screen (at least until anyone in charge confirms otherwise), and if you look at the illustrations for the Sanctuary city posted in the art thread some time ago, you'll notice that those are far from the final design.

I realise it is just a concept art and the actual finished product may look nothing like it or may never exist. However this is the straw that made me join the townscreen camp.
Then again, there is supposedly work being done to implement townscreens in the future. So what not is, could be.
And though it is in the concept of the Dungeon of Heroes V, there are plenty ways I could point out how they are different other than the mushrooms. But that is not the discussion we're having here.

Hehe It's all about the atmosphere and a 2.5 town screen looking like that would be a brilliant addition to the game.

The buildings themselves are once again too plain-looking and uniform.
But concepts will be concepts, it's gonna be interesting seeing the final result.

* Most fans will agree that the game's interface is not very user-friendly. Examples of this are not getting a proper spellbook, windowed as opposed to full screens(hero/skill/town) not to mention how tiny everything looks. Are there any plans for improvement?
One of the challenges we faced when making H6 was creating an interface that could work on both 4:3 and 16:9 screens, since more and more players now play on widescreen monitors. The solution we and Black Hole came up with (fixes-sized windows at the center of the screen) was successful in some ways and not-so-much in others. On the specific topic of accessibility and user-friendliness, your mileage may vary. Some of us were replaying some older titles of the series recently, and found themselves missing some of interface features added by H6.
Now we all agree the interface of Heroes VI lacks the “magical flavor” it used to have in the previous games. We'll try to improve this whenever possible, starting by the fullscreen towns. In any case, this lesson has been clearly learnt for the future.
* Where are the long-promised town screens? Could you share a deadline?
Creating high-res 2D art is a long process. You have to find the good artists, design all the buildings, think about changes of the GUI, the aforementioned 4:3/16:9 conundrum... It took some time before we could start the actual production. The good news is, production is well under way, although we can't give you an actual release date yet (we don˘t want to jump the gun once more).
What we can say is, they will be closer to the Heroes III town screens, they will be interactive, show all buildings and upgrades, and will be released in a future patch.
