The dwellings are 3D but the background is bad jpeg, thus both can't blend each other, look closely. Looks very amateurish:
Sun rays come from another angle than dwellings triggered shadows. Rushed out, good 10 years ago IMHO.

Are the shadows an effect that are added on top of the jpeg when the buildings are made? Would it be possible for them to go in and fix the shadows at a later point?

Of course everything is fixable, those guys have good tools. I was only surprised they show this screen, you don't have to be an expert to see what's wrong.

I doubt the dwellings are 3D (or 2.5D for that matter).
They look kinda flat, almost rushed (like 15 minutes tops in Photoshop by an experienced artist),
just like all other artwork coming from H6.
At least they're being consistent about something

I doubt that these things will be fixed in foreseeable future, these are town screens that we'll be stuck with for quite some time. I'm yet to decide if I'm disappointed or just apathetic though, Ubisoft's quality standards regarding Heroes are notoriously low after all.

Yes. the more town screems I See the more I think "Juts give it to the fanbase.. they will do better"
As many have said.. these pictures look like H-IV: random background and seperatly made buildings which are put on "appropriet looking" places. The image was not made as one unit and is not coherent.

Regarding Heroes 6, anything, that the fans came up with, was better, than what Ubi made... just let me name some of it: Sanctuary line-up, lich and vampire concept arts, Necropolis town screen, systems of magic... etc.

this is just Heroes IV all over again... they could have made it good with some effort, but they choose to make half-arsed attempt at H III which is just not good enough.
Screens are empty, buildings do not fit into landscape angles are all weird there are issues with shadows (and it's not only heaven) same with colour palette and saturation...
I'm now afraid of balance changes they are willing to do, just waiting for divine vengance now...

I think calling it Heroes IV all over again is a bit harsh - even if there are disappointments with these ones, they are lightyears better than the Heroes IV ones.

Well this is an improvement from Necro and Stronghold. At least the buildings are more varied in size, we have houses that indicate town's growth and we have shadow!
I only hope that these improvements are because Ubisoft were listening to our suggestions, and will keep on improving the design so the in-game town screens are better than these three.

Not lightyears, no.
The architecture in H4 was a lot more interesting than what we get here.
My main gripes with the H4 town screens are the backdrop and building placements.

HoMM4 TownScreens had their advantages as well!
The buildings itself were the most detailed
and from artistic point of view were just incredible!!!
Also change of terrain is quite logical,
as in all other HoMM games you will have for example
a lush forest in snow terrain,!!!
while in HoMM4 its clear whether you town is in forest or in swamp
p.s.
i found another image of Marketpalce for Haven Townscreen in Heroes6

imo they should delay town screens to 1.6 in order to fix also those minor but ugly errors in them

Wow, I gotta say, the Stronghold one looks really good in high resolution. I wasn't impressed by the smaller pictures I had seen before, but this one looks really good. I guess that gives some hope that some of the issues with the Haven one will be less present in full quality.

I just compared two screenshots of Haven against each other using Acid Cave slide-show functionality. The buildings on each of them have slightly different positions, which means this can't be a final version. Hard to imagine structures moving around as we build them.
