Baby making project....

As someone has stated before there is a wide conspiracy of Wasteland trying to take over OSM section, being the double agent I am, decided to post here as well... and wait untill one side wins it all

Baby making project, Im talkin about Genetic engineering in unborn babies, science has evolved to that point where they can successfully identify genetic "defects" in unborn babies as well as its gender, eye color, expected height... hence the next step is of course engineering "superior" babies and disposing of the "flawed" ones...

Is it the next step in the evolution of our species or a forced evolution, is it the real definition of the survival of the fittest ?
can our specie survive without the weaker and dumber ones ?

parents amongst you will claim that their kids are perfect as they are already, future parents amongst you will without a doubt wish only the best for your kids... If pro then what is the real price we pay for playing god, if against arent you dooming your kids to be the inferior ones ?

Feel free to discuss any of the variations and of course to express your opinions

I personally prefer the old fashioned way of baby making .

I have nothing against genetic engineering of human race. After all, try telling parents whose child has Down syndrome that it's just "survival of the fittest" or "natural selection". >_> If we could get rid of genetic mutations that way, by all means we should.

As for looks, hard to tell. Better to be a genetically engineered beauty than a naturally ugly person, of that I have no doubt. But the world would quickly fill with "next to perfect" looking people and beauty would became a mundane thing, so... not too good.

LOL
the way of making babies stays the preferable one...
Genetic engineering starts after the baby is within the womb, figuring out the best ways to kick mommy (poor soccer moms)

so if i got it right, down syndrom kids should be exterminated, no place for less fortunate ones amongst us ?

Yep been there being kicked from the inside out and the worse bit is when they get their foot in your rib, ouch lol.

I dont agree with the fact you can choose the sex and now even hair and eye colour etc to me thats playing god. Its like having your Christmas present wrapped when you already know what it is the best part is when its born and you find out whether its a boy or girl and then watch it grow to see how it will develope.

As with all things it could be useful in cases where there are genetic problems but only after considerable debating and thought.

Most genetic engineering is actually done in the lab and then the fertilised egg put back into the woman.

If a mother has the right to abort, quite obviously she should have the right to try and genetically engineer the fetus in her womb.

Of course, either way she has to live with the results.

Ouch kick to the ribs sounds painful indeed, hope it was a little princess then instead of a future football player
make sure you use that to your advantage through a set of well placed emotional manipulations - "U kicked me in a rib, the least you can do is clean up your room" winning argument without a doubt

BTW - Baby as a Christmas present... brilliant one, I will without a doubt use that line in the future

Down Syndrome should be exterminated as every other disease, and kids that were unfortunate to get it should be "cured" and allowed normal life. That would be fantastic.

I doubt the specific defect is curable, the choice parents face is abort it or have it with a down syndrome.... horrible choice to make IMO

Hmm... I'm betting this service would, in most if not all countries, cost quite a lot of money for the parents.

Thus we might end up with an upper class of super-humans and a lower class of non-enhanced humans.

Might have to set up some kinda regulations for it, but on the whole I'm for. The pros outweigh the cons imo.

My take is that it should be the baby's decision.
The baby is at a state where it cannot make a decision.
As such, it'd be best, if these changes can be made when the person (baby) is in a state where these decision can be made (and hopefully these decisions can be reversed as well).

When it comes to it, though, I don't see the big difference of your lineage being the deciding factor of your potential or if it's someone who wants the best for you.

As such, to me, as long as there's sufficient experience in doing the engineering, I have no problems with this.

My major concern however is if it's the same observer which is born. Of course it's not the same life, but is the person behind all the exterior, such as look, behaviour, senses, thoughts, feelings and memory, the same person? If not, I'd say the procedure is basicly destroying one life and creating another, which would be, in my humble opinion, murder.

Further more, if we one day even can reverse these decisions at any time, and if it doesn't change the consciousness behind the person, then I'd see no problems with this procedure at all.

To be honest. With the greatest respect, after all, I know you're a clever, intelligent and smart guy. I don't find it reasonable that these two should be connected.

In one case, the mother repulses the baby willingly, without necessarily doing anything to the baby's body, nor mind.

In the other case, she does change the body and/or mind.

To me, those two differences makes a world of difference.

Edit:

It's not curable. But this topic is about distant future, isn't it? Gene manipulation on humans isn't really possible atm.

To get rid of diseased genes and eliminate the treat of future suffering a big YES

Other stuff ? how tall, how smart, how pretty, eye colors... that is just insane, it is a mockery to what we as humans stand for, we are all individuals, that is what makes us beautiful and unique, what makes us humans, sets of perfectly enginereed humans.... BORING

Won't we still be individuals, as long as we're the same unique self, inside?

You may look like me, you may talk like me, you may smell like me, you may sound like me, heck you may even taste like me. But the caverns of my mind, though they may work the same for you, is my solitude, unless we never were two.

I highly doubt that individuality would suffer from those kinda enhancements.

For one thing, taste differs. All parents will not want their son/daughter to look exactly like the other.

Also, we develop based on our enviroment as well. No on should turn out the same because our experiences will be different.

It is possible in a limited manner and not on a scale of engineering the entire human (far as we know of course) however it is still against the law in all countries around the world for ethical reasons, thats why i was interested in hearing you all

That would perhaps not be as bad as we think. Sure, "beauty" would no longer matter, since everybody would be beautiful, but isn't that good? Think of it. Diversity would most likely still exist (different hair color, skin color, body shape), but there would be no visual prejudice and we would eliminate the random factor of looks from life. Which is good on the road to give people truly equal chances.

Don't forget there is absolutely no "fairness" in human life until we, humans, make it fair. We already did it with societies, law, we could also do it with genes one day.

I'm not sure I understand your reasoning either. You're saying that if a mother already has the right to end the life of her fetus before it begin she should most certanily have the right to design a fetus that is going to live?
Well it may make sense on first thought but don't you think it's a bit more complicated than "since it's going to live and life is significantly better than death is has to be legal!"?

I don't have a shadow of a doubt that Bio-engineering will become the norm of society eventually. The thought of being able to design and have a "ideal" child is just too tempting. Not to mention that these children might quite possibly be superior to "normal" people in some ways. It all depends on how well science will be able to boost or enhance people. But for now that's all academic...

In these early stages I think the idea will face stubborn resistance from many countries especially societies in which religion (not neccesarily christianity btw) still dominates the values.
But apart from ethical concerns you have to consider a few other things as well... it is quite possible that parents will start to design children to their likeing and that is where this will go to far in my oppinion. I can live with correcting a few things as diseases and such, I don't think you should mess with things like hair colour, eye coulour etc. since they're purely cosmetic and don't change the person but I can still get behind that. Where the fun stops if you start altering the person the baby is going to be. Give a female extra long legs, make a male very high and things like that.

When I lived in South Korea I've met an unhealthy ammount of women who decided to define themselves over their daugthers. If the mother was a failed violinist her daugther would spend atleast 2 hours 4 days a week on rigorous training with the most expensive coach she can finance. If she was a failed actress she will send her to acting school etc. etc. whether the girl likes to play the violine or acting doesn't matter the slightest.
All I'm saying that there will be plenty of people out there who will design their children to meet their own needs and that is just disgusting since any enhancement provided won't be for the better of the child but simply so the parents will have a better time with their child.
