@ Blizz - I'm guessing that when growin up in a certain way it effects how you view your environment and I'm also pretty certain that in an unfamiliar new environment your behavior would change as well (only assuming though, I don't know you), when I was in NY, in queens people werent speakin English at all, don't get me wrong though, Hyspanic people in queens were way nicer in their behavior towards me than any other ethnicities in NY but at first when all I could hear is Spanish, it freaked me up a little bit, felt a bit uncomfortable...

@ Wog - I dont care about nothing besides personality as well, and I don't mind being the only white person when with my non-white friends, I was reffering to the situation where you are unfamiliar with everybody, If i'm on a train and I'm the only white guy there I will for sure spend the ride listening to my ipod/iphone and not engaging, If there is another white guy/girl chances of me trying to chat them up are higher (sometimes I just wanna listen to my music though, but you get the picture I hope)

Yeah I get what you mean ... but I've never thought about stuff like that. I don't care much about differences in people whatsoever. That's just how I am Maybe cause I'm different from most people myself, and therefor find it easy not caring how others are different from me.

There's one critical part of Brave New World you're forgetting - there were no enhancements in that book. Betas and lower were created by restricting oxygen during gestation, and epsilons had induced fetal alcohol syndrome. So that's making people worse, not better.

It follows the same concept of having different tiers of humans.

If there's a room with 20 women you have plenty of choice to pick the one you feel you want the most.

I wonder: do you take issue with selective breeding of apples or grapefruits to create new hybrids?  Do you take issue with selective breeding of dogs?

Actually the biggest problem with genetic engineering of humans as I see it is that it will almost certainly not be distributed equally among people of various socioeconomic status.  In other words, rich people will have access to it while poor people will not.  Which means that genetic engineering will catalyze a social stratification into a very starkly divided, two-class system.  Genetic engineering may kill the middle class.

Whether that in itself is a reason to enforce a moratorium on research remains an open question.  But the implications are certainly rather sobering.

The world would be much better if everyone had an IQ of 150

Just a minor quibble, but this is mathematically impossible, since IQ is defined relative to the arithmetic mean, which is artifically set at 100.  I.e., if everyone had the same IQ, they'd have IQs of 100, not 150.  Assuming test scores were properly standarized, of course.

Theres a vast difference between selectively breeding apples and dogs to a baby. A baby should be made the natural way with 2 people that are in love not in a test tube in a lab all clinical. Yes as with everything it can have its uses like if there a genetic problems that could be avoided but not just cos 2 people want a baby girl with blonde hair and blue eyes etc, thats wrong.

So you think its ok to decide right we are going to have a baby but I only want a girl and it has to have blue eyes and blonde hair? To me a baby is a precious gift and as long as it is born healthy and alive who cares. Its different if there is a genetic reason that if that person had a boy something would be wrong.

No, I don't see anything wrong with that. It's not like those are detrimental traits - they're not going to harm the baby in any way. Personally, if I was to have a child, I wouldn't care if it was a boy or girl, or what color of eyes it had, but I have nothing against other people modifying their fetuses' genes in such a way if they prefer.

Now please answer my question: why is it wrong?

Elaborate.  What is the difference?  In both cases, humans are directly responsible for manipulating a living genome.  In fact, humans have been doing this for thousands of years.  And yet research shows that most people believe that manipulating genomes at the molecular level are are less natural and less ethical than manipulating genomes over hundreds of years via selective breeding - even if the latter process yields organisms which are much more different in comparison to ancestral starting materials than the former process, which may yield no difference at all.  (I can hunt down that reference if you're really interested - this kind of work has been pioneered by sociologist P. Rozin at the University of Pennsylvania).

So why is that? What's the distinction?

Genetically engineering the sex of your child is seriously a bad thing.  One of the thing I learnt whilst working in a hospital was that sonogram/ultrasound results were rarely given out to certain ethnic groups, especially not during the earlier stages of pregnancy.  Why because these cultures favor males.

There are certain areas in India and China (where female infanticide has been common) that now have ratio's about approx 10 males to 1 female ... thats why its a bad thing.

well, in the case of apples, if they mess up like in my example with bees and make them poisonous, it is obviously a problem. well, of course, if they took time to make sure it is safe, there would be no problem I guess, but often, money don't wait.

there's something they may not consider, it is what will be the impact of those modifications on the whole environment, and not only on humans? what if they create a specy of flowers that actually kills bees?

if they aren't cautious about it, they may cause a lot of damage before we should even fear that super-men take the power.

Depends on the level were doing it. If it isn't picking from your and your partners genes the kid isn't going to be yours anymore.

I have nothing against it. Something would have to be done to control it though. Leave it uncontrolled and you'd have the society blow up in decades.

It's too bad we don't have some sort of high-tech Gay Gun patented that we could sell to the Chinese, so you could just just shoot the males and make them gay. That way they wouldn't be conducting illegal raids to get females.

Anyway, that is a problem, but more of an isolated one, since a major preference towards males/females doesn't exist in the US and a lot of places. In fact if anything, I'd suspect that there would be a bias toward having a girl as opposed to a boy. I know personally that I would want a daughter more than a son (my niece has made me bias ).

There might be in the future a legislation that governs the ratio of male and females in the world to deal with that, since having the ratios being too uneven would be a big sinkhole on national happiness (and stability). That's a huge mark against civil liberties, though I've come to the depressing conclusion that futuristic technologies are the doom of civil liberty. I will be pleasantly amazed if the 22nd century in the developed world is just as free as it is now.
