Let the A.I. fight your battles?
Do you ever let the A.I. fight your battles? When I think it might be a hopeless battle, I let the A.I. take over. The computer does all the calculations to inflict the most damage before one dies (sometimes, anyway). What about in a tournament setting? Is this bad form then?

I use auto-combat only if I've lost the battle, to see if my army's able to win at all And if AI wins I try to fight again myself. ut I think that HoMM is a battle game, so using auto-battle always is just cheating.

AI is stupid, and that's a fact
Not only is it stupid, but he always makes some beginners mistakes. I won't set autocombat unless I have an army of 100 Ghost Dragons, 200 Dread Knights and so on. That way I am sure I won't loose. But even this I do only when I'm busy with something else. I usually win battles with no losses, but the AI never does. And he doesn't use the spells. Most of them actually. He uses Haste, slow, lightning and stuff like this. I had once Armageddon's Blade with 23 Spell Power, set autocombat and the AI didn't use it. This is nuts.

Letting the AI takes over the battle could be... inspiring at times. It is exactly because the AI always do all those stupid moves (as we call them), that at times it may make a move or cast a certain spell that may have never occured to be us to be possible or useful (especailly in the spell casting part). So I think it is not too bad an idea to see how the AI fights a... say 50-50 or losing battle afterall (but be sure to save game before that).

Not wise to use auto fight because com never waits.
Always use magic if cant kill all enemies at the first round, regardless if you need it.
Most of the time they attack the wrong creatures.
causualties which were not neccessary.

I only use auto-combat in late-game
overwhemling battles to save time.
If I can't win the battle on my own. I
don't think AI can.

I'm never using the AI.
I have tried to use it when the victory is surely mine, just to save time. But then the comp casts fire el. or such stupid spells, that now I am waging even the smallest battles myself.

Well I have had a battle in which I was totally outnumbered in creatures and stats and wanted to surrender but the AI was wearing shackles....
So I just went and got some coffee or something and truned the autocombat on. When I came back the AI had won the match for me .. which I thought was utterly hopeless LOL.....
I was kind of ashamed at this !@

You must be very lucky that time Hexa! Very Lucky! BTW, what army did you use in the battle?
I wish I had the same experience, but when I'm overpowered my troops are overwhelmed... Hero's stats really matter a lot with a balanced troop!

Its not that tough to kill comp even if having much less creatures, just "gangbang" the enemy stacks. And if u dunno how to do that just play a TC with me and you´ll learn something

No, never...
...never let AI fight your battles, this can only lead to a disaster. Not even when you are much powerful (you might find yourself with some unexpected losses), let alone in those nasty close shaves...
Why do you think AI could win you a battle which you yourself can't?!!! No way! Do you think that putting this on will show you whether the fight is winable at all?!!! That this AI's way is the maximum you can get out of a battle?! Not a chance... There are no rules here, but it's best to fight your battles yourself.
Even if you lose, you might learn something...

yes the computer does all the risky shots that i don't do because im afraid of losing creature numbers.
so AI is kinda good.

...the autocombat AI is completely useless in my opinion...after I got out of the first stages of playing the game, when I thought it was amazing that it could actually win battles, when I thought the odds were astounding
...even if you're going to lose, you might as well try to take out a few extra guys, to make your job easier when you come back for round 2.
...the only times I ever used AI, is when I'm killing wandering creatures, and even if they manage to kill one or two of my guys, I really don't care...during those periods, I go grab myself another snack

Sometimes "the stupid" AI wins
To Hexa : Don't fell ashamed.
I once watched a newbee playing his 3 game of chess agains a guy with rating +2100 (a turnement, and division player in my country). The newbee made a draw. And boy was I puzzled, and I asked the tournament player what had happend, and he said. "Well I simply went for the best move all the time". And the newbee said ," I just tryed not make it to complicated for myself."
So I sat down and played , made it complicated for the newbee and won easyly a couble of times, but I had not even a draw against the tournament player!!
Now here the AI is called stupid. Actual we don't fight the computer, we try to explore its programing! And we called it playing! But think about it the AI is not stupid, how can we call an opponnent stupid that always plays up to the best of its knowledge!!!
But to explore the programming fully, it can be helpful to know how "stupid" it can act. If we as humans do the best move (as if playing against a human) we may make the AI better than it is.
Playing to minimize losses against a computer, or playing a human is quite different thinking.
And both are different to play to win a battle against a computer.
I recently had a series of reloads , fighting a battle as fortress, defending my capital, trying to maximise damage to the opponent. Meaning, I had given op to win it. I hit auto battle and then, the computer playing my side in the autobattle cast firewall near the moat. the computer didn't win, but a new idea where born in my mind.
Firewall on the moat!! Petrify from my few basilisk. maybe the battle here could be won!! And a spell I nearly newer use did come to graze again!
So something can be learned from the AI , but not that often!
