So, where are all the classic creatures?
Got bored the other day, fired up HOMM5 for the first time in years. Got even more bored and decided to wikipedia HOMM5, and discovered that the 6th game is in production. I eagerly leaped to these forums to which I haven't been to in many years.
However, after viewing all the info on HOMM6...I'm kind of disappointed. Maybe I'm a bit outdated, but the HOMM series brings back a great deal of nostalgia, and it just seems with every game they depart more and more from the core series.
Entire factions seem to have simply disappeared. Creatures that have been in EVERY game, gone. The entirety of the Academy/Wizard faction simply gone; something that has been a staple of the series since HOMM2. Where are the golems, gargoyles, mages, titans? And what of the dungeon faction? How can you have a HOMM game without Dragons, Hydras, or Minotaurs? Perhaps the most disturbing change though is the entire removal of the sylvan/rampart/sorceress faction. Where are the dwarves, elves, unicorns, and sprites?
Sure, factions have changed several times over the course of the series - however there has been an almost consistent "untouchable" base factions that have been present in every game. However, most of them have been removed for what reason?
Even for the factions that did stay, they're almost unrecognizable. How can you have a necropolis faction without vampires or bone dragons?
I'm not going to judge the game until I play it, obviously. However, it doesn't seem like the same fantasy series I grew up with anymore. Whether the change will be for good or bad remains to be seen, but I'm incredibly wary.
P.S. On a side note, I wish everyone that may vaguely remember me a fond hello

They'll be back. It seems very likely that Elves and a version of dungeon (probably built around Dark Elves and the Faceless) will be in the first expansion.
I actually really like the factions in HVI. Obviously I'd welcome more factions in the future, but after playing the beta I think that I'll enjoy getting to know the existing five in depth.

the vampires are still in the necropolis...& i was really happy that they finally got rid of the bone dragon...it just didn't measure up to any of the other top level creatures in 5...and i think the fate weaver makes more sense as a champion unit anyway
the only thing that's really "unrecognizable" at this point, as far as other factions go, is the glory in the haven, but i think the idea of that creature makes alot of sense, and is a welcome addition as far as i'm concerned
i agree that i'm going to miss the sylvan in this one, but i'm more excited to have an entirely new faction to play as

The only thing we can hope for is that Academy and Sylvan will somehow return in expansion packs. Hell, expansion packs... they're meant to be additions, not patches to restore the natural count!
Anyway. Here's hoping. Bringing those two back would really be nice. I'm not really looking back to Dungeon... Minotaurs and hydras might have been nice, but the bunch of stripperific dark elves can stay somewhere deep in the archives.
Still - remember. The world of Heroes 1-4 is not the same one as the current one. It's like Final Fantasy now - some motifs can repeat, but nothing is really the same.

You may have missed it, but Heroes4 was the last true Heroes game.
Heroes of Might and Magic always had very abstract factions. You couldn't even call them "societies". They were like zoo's - creatures organized by biome (Plains, Swamp, Lava, Dirt, Snow...). Vast majority of units were species. The word "races" doesn't really apply to factions of Heroes1-4.
Classic HOMM was based on human myths and folk tales.
Enter Heroes5. Factions are society-like. They strongly resemble factions from known settings like Warhammer or Warcraft. They are mostly 1 race with variations (orcs/goblinoids, humans, elves, dwarves, elves again). The word "races" fits just fine.
Heroes5-6 factions are based on other games, popular fiction, etc.

!!!!!!!!!!
A riddle !
What's the most famous mythical creature that was never included in Heroes1-5, and - according to current information - won't be present in Heroes6 either ? Trust me, you've heard of it.
PM me if you know :-).

So,having old creatures back is good?
The ones I miss are the H3 Titans,H5 Black Dragon(Considering how the H6 one looks),H3 cavalier and the H5 Green Dragon and their upgrades.
ps:Honestly, the Green dragon did not fit the with flower lovers. They looked too grotesque.Just Imagine them with darker color...
The Emerald dragon looked inferior to the green one...

Of course it's the werewolf. Thanks for not listening to my suggestion about PM and spoiling it for everyone else.

You people are only discussing the HoMM series it seems, but the Might and Magic series as a whole (RPGs mainly) does have Werewolves, unique creatures, a Necropolis without Vampires and Bone Dragons, games without Dragons, Hydras, or Minotaurs, etc etc. And indeed it's not a fantasy series either. It's not that you're outdated. It's that you're not outdated enough.

I think the most urgent faction to be introduced is Academy.
Sure, I hated the Gargoyles in H5 but I REALLY MISS creatures such as the MAGES, GOLEMS, DJINN and TITANS.
H3 Dungeon is the second most important to me. It was such a cool town and all the creatures in it looked AMAZING.
I think that visually, H3 Dungeon is by far the best in the series.

For me, it's a toss-up between H3 Dungeon and H3 Fortress, both are refreshing changes from the generally Tolkienesqe feel of the faction, but somehow they were also missing a sense of unity, they just felt like a bunch of slapped-together creatures who'd tear each other apart as happily as go after any enemy.

The H4 black dragon was fine. In fact, H4 has, IMO, a lot of the finest art out of all the parts, although the vampire is somewhat non-sequitur.
I definitely want the Titans back, too. They might be giants and nothing more, but they come from Academy, which is most likely my favorite town, and, well, they throw lightning. Best unit ever.

Of course!!! I am really sad that HoMM have never made a faction with the final creature or as I like to call them bosses the mighty KRAKEN!!! A giant octopus inside a giant shell that drops water on moving (so it can actually walk on land!) but it never got implemented into the game

I agree on this, and believe that many people don't remember the good things from Homm4.
The black dragons in Homm4 were for awhile the most powerful creatures in every battle. They looked great, and were a real pain to fight. Definitely epic.
And the Titans looked good too in Homm4.
Considering Heroes6 is so far missing a couple of factions (which will be introduced in expansion packs), its understandable that some common creatures are missing. Also, some creatures like the black dragon are now bosses and not in the recruitable castle.

I actually like H4 titan the most. He just looks mean. He wears steel, not a fancy yellow dress.
There was a lot of room for unique towns without dropping the H1-4 formula. For example... a water town ! Kraken would be the boss, others - pirates, sea serpents and monsters. The uniqueness factor would come from the fact that only some of the creatures could travel on land. Others might be able to enter land, but in a weaker form. You would be strong in your domain, but would have to conquer some land dwellers to suplement your army. Creatures could include:
- Hippocampus (a horse with fish tail)
- Kelpie (supernatural water horse from Celtic folklore)
- anything from Cthulhu mythos, it's in public domain by now
- Kappa
- Mermaid, Nereid, Nymph
- Sirens
- Kraken
- Leviathan
- Giant turtle or whale. There are world-sized turtles in some mythologies and in Discworld.
Of course, it would require special care from map makers. A proper balance of water and land on each map allowing the Atlantis. (Balance is not necessarily 50:50; if Atlantis was much stronger on water, it could be 75:25 for land. 25% map's wealth on water). But if it was present from the start rather some expansion, mapmakers would adapt.
In any case, water part of Heroes is underdeveloped.
