And what does Heroes VI do? Keeps the 3D but kills camera control with the way it's resetting.

Not to mention that they've been claiming prior releasing the game that everything would be visible from the default angle of view but it's not. As I'm playing through the campaigns, I see that I keep missing on a lot resources that are not obvious without using this uncomfortable camera control which I can't be bothered with...

Go figure, 2D groupies still exist, I thought they had gone extinct some 8 years ago

I do not see absolutely any reason why the Heroes has to resort to old visual technologies, when H6 has hands down the best graphics in the series (maybe right now the only good thing about this game).
3D does not affect the Heroes formula / gameplay in any negative way, it simply adds (much needed) eyecandy.

It's not that it needs to go back to sprite-based rendering.

It's that the the map needs to work from a single angle, so that you don't have to rotate it in order to see everything in front of you.

They can keep the same 3D renderings of everything, but if they can't figure out how to make a user-friendly camera in a game where moving the camera isn't all that important to begin with, they could save a whole lot of development money by making it fixed.

To me, there's no reason why they should make Heroes fully 3D, with zoomed in angle-moving camera capabilities.  It doesn't change the gameplay; all that it does is allow them to use the game engine when making the cinematics.  Which doesn't look very good.

And it doesn't add anything to the player experience except frustration, from what I can tell.

That it has the best graphics in the series, it means nothing. Because it's the newest in the series anyway.

Compare it with other new games though and see for yourself. Heroes VI graphics suck. When the view is from high up they look good, but zoom in and well, they're mediocre at best.

Especially the cut scenes are a pain to watch...

Anyway, personally, I don't care about the graphics. They're good as they are. I just don't count them as one of the game's good things.

I think for the first time in any Heroes game, the adventure map actually looks pretty - like, gorgeously pretty. And the combat arenas also. There's put an amazing amount of detail into this. Too bad it feels like this was where they focused all their work.

The creature artworks are excellent, the in-game models might be well done, but most of the time creatures are so teeny-tiny that you can't really make it out anyway. When you do a heavy zoom, things don't look good at all, creatures don't seem to blend in with surroundings but seems to be models cut-in over a pretty background (which, in fact they are) but which makes the whole thing look very inhomogenous (is that an anti-aliasing feature or something else?).

Cut-scenes, from what I've seen on screenshots and remember from the demo, didn't impress me. And let's just not mention the town screens at all.

So I think that the environment (adventure/combat map) graphics are inarguably superior to previous games, but whether the overall graphic impression is superior is more doubtful.

When I think "graphics", I think texture quality, smoothness of motion, and whether or not objects move "through" each other.

The town screen is part of UI, not graphics.  The creatures looking out of place is part of art design, not graphics.

The graphics in Heroes 6 are actually pretty good.  The movements are smooth, the textures are high-quality, and as near as I can tell there are no instances of objects moving "through" one another.

The UI is god-awful.  The art design needs some work.  Not a lot, mind you; they got the proportions right, which is better than the previous two games, but the factions (just like in Heroes 5) look homogenized, like the Necropolis held a team meeting and said, "So we're in agreement then, our team colors will be black and green?"

That homogeny is actually okay for Necropolis and Inferno, which are comprised of units that are fundamentally similar.  Even Haven, it makes sense that the guy making the armor for the army will make all of it more or less the same.

For Sanctuary and Stronghold, it makes a bit less sense.  Stronghold in particular should feel more like a hodgepodge of wild creatures who have all been forced by circumstances into working together.  Sanctuary feels too clean for a faction that pulls its ranks from frogs, snakes, and fish.

And I'm dreading the Dark Elves all wearing purple, the Light Elves all wearing green, and the Wizards all dressed in blue.  Or Orange.  Or whatever team colors they decide to give them.

Maybe for you, for me it is the best art style in the series. I never liked HoMM Ghosts in any of their incarnations in previous games - this time, however, I'm simply in love with the unit.
Subjective as hell though, I agree.

I still want to meet the brilliant mind who designed the character screen of H6. I guess he/she won an internal contest at Ubihole of drawing the most counterintuitive UI ever.
Scrolling to see my artifact collection has never been more painful.

Heheh, I think it looks really stupid that half of the hero's model is dipped into his artifact slots. To say that the UI is god awful, is an understatement. It both uncomfortable to use and very ugly looking.

An understatement?  I dunno.

When I say "god-awful", I mean "God looked at them, and for a brief moment regretted having given Man fire all those years ago.  This is what my gifts went to?  Come ON.

Then God raised His hand to smite the designer who created the UI, only to be reminded by His angels that he had decided to take a strictly hands-off approach.

Then the angels saw the UI for themselves.  That storm in the sky you saw the night of the release?  Yeah.  That was the angels, dying of disgust."

That's what I mean when I say "god-awful".  If you still think it could be worse...well, I might still be inclined to agree, but I don't know how you would even describe it.

I think both graphics and art style of hoMM6 are fine. Well, more than fine. Not perfect but still strong aspect of the game.

Also, I have finished like 60% of the campaigns so far and never ever felt the need to tilt the camera in any way. Compared to H5, static camera works much better here.

UI however, is dreadful. The window/tab approach makes the whole graphic aspect less enjoyable.

Some people just have no imagination on how great a new 2D heroes could look.

3D is just useless like it's used in H5 or H6. You lose way to much overview. Look at a map in H3, you see lots of items and important points all in one screen. With the same map in H6, you would have to scroll your 3D map even on a large scalled view to have as much things on the screen.

And H3 is only 800X600 in 32000 color mode. Imagine it in 1900X1080 in 16 million colors. ...but like i said already, it's useless for some to try to imagine...

I disagree. I used to rotate the camera in H5 years after its release, that must count for something. Besides part of why H3 was the way it was is that they had to make do with less. Times change, technology advances. Perhaps neither the best implementation nor really necessary but still good to have.

The UI of H6 is simple. And simple can be snow too.
I hafta say I loved the UI in H4. Leveling up and winning a battle was really exciting due to battle result screen's animation and sound (+ the random factor in levels). Also Hero screen and inventory had a lot better and clever design. Those things were way more pleasing than the ones in H6 which looks really basic and bland. Just blue boxes with gold outlining...? ....guys my face is melting guys my fachjknfgjdg

Oh well, I still think graphics, unit design and and all around art style of H6 is amazing, but it's a bit predictable. There should be more interesting things in the adventure map etc. Everything feels so streamlined. In H4 you felt like you were in a fantasy. Now it's just a game which is visually beautiful.

The game lost some of the 'fantasy' feel to it because of the lack of wild & wondrous buildings in it. They went too heavy on the buildings that give X sort of bonus for the next battle. Heroes 4 is still the best game from 2-6 in terms of the story & atmosphere of the map. The graphics are quite lovely in H6 though, and I'm not just talking about how it's a better resolution, since as a newer game that is basically a given. I like the style of the graphics; the water, the jungle, the mountains, etc. The 2nd level on the orc campaign with the blue waters and the giant crater in the ocean was quite cool. If it weren't for the fun-loving cyclopes throwing boulders at boats, the Pao Islands would be a great place to vacation at
