God sea battles... I did ok when I outclassed my enemies, my 2nd rate and 3rd rate fleet had a hard time overcoming a pirate fleet of Galleons and Fluyts, but now this...
I have 11 ships, 4 dreadnaughts supported by 5 3rd rate frigates, VS 5 enemy 2nd rates, 2 3rd rates, and the rest 6th rates with some carronade ships and mortars. (me 11 vs 19 enemy)
4th bloody time I redo this battle from scratch, not necessarily to win, but just to practice, feel so helpless at sea. Almost won the battle, the enemy had 3 very badly damaged ships remaining, one of them demasted was able to still hammer my last ship. A whole battlefield of surrendered vessels, even with their bloody admiral eviscerated they still wouldn't give up.

Ship battles are ****ing beyond me, my first class go down so easily, while the enemy ships seem to just shrug off cannon fire, and I dropped an enemy ship into red hull dmg and nothing, carries on as if nothing happened, my ships just surrender while still in yellow TT. This happens even if the enemy admiral is killed...
Replayed this one battle about 7 times now, with wholly different results each time. My best one was when I managed to get them down to 3 ships, but ever since I began trying to use fancy tactics like 'crossing the T' my fleet has been obliterated. I just don't understand how the computer can win it so flawlessly in auto-battle...TT

It is very much acknowledged that the naval battles are snowed up in total wars, they simply don't work as they should.

I had a similar problem in Shogun 2, I played enough naval battles and I mastered them in the end, but there the ships were far more responsive and most could fire in all directions.
Also, I sunk the goddamned flagship and their admiral is just swimming on the ocean...wtf?!

The naval isn't really about any real tactics but more about beating the system.

And here was I naively thinking that I'm steam rolling the Marathas (I took Sri Lanka and southern India). They unleashed 50 ships at me (albeit of greatly varying qualities) and god knows how many men, luckily their cavalry ain't worth a damn, but the legions of armies almost cost me the mainland, thank god that I trained a secondary force of east india troops.

I've decided to cut my Russian campaign short, the management of a huge empire and the scarcity of nations by this point was getting rather dull. I was going to get butchered in southern India, so the Marathas did offer some challenge, but my imminent defeat came about due to being hopelessly outnumbered. (around 30,000 Indians have been encountered, all against my 3200 man professional expeditionary force, and 5000 Company recruits).
Anyway, I'm in my "German" phase at the moment. Out of the choice between Hanover and Prussia I decided to go for the latter due to prestige and whatnot. So initial goals in this game is to limit the destruction of any European factions. Hoping to wrench control of the German states through war with Austria and through diplomacy. (by forming alliances and hoping to make key German states my protectorates)
Prussian Campaign (I'll edit this as my game goes on)

I was playing as Prussia, and while getting other nations to be my vassals was hard at first when at war with Austria and Poland, it got easier. Saxons were the first to bend the knee, then Bavaria (allies of Austria). And after that the game got easier than ever before, I remained undefeated in battle, and my eastern flank was secured by Britain while I destroyed Austria.
Now I'm playing Shogun 2, I've missed the challenge dearly, (I've never managed to survive on the highest difficulty) while I could win battles with tact, the overwhelming amount of enemies, well, eventually overwhelmed me. Now the key that I've been missing is vassals, most of the time after dealing a heavy blow to an enemy you can make them "bend the knee" before they have a chance to recover, (and often I am incapable of finishing them off) thus instead of having an enemy you gain a willing ally, that pays you and also protects your borders for you.

Okay I'm in my Eastern mood, Ancient Assyria, Persia and of course the Ottoman Sultanate. As such I started my Ottoman campaign. I always thought that these guys had it easy, 12 territories massing vast armies, certainly seemed so when I was playing Russia having butchered over 150,000 of their men, a seemingly unending horde. But, this faction has to be in the most dire state, even Poland doesn't compare to it. I'll enjoy the challenge, I've already made preparations to boost the economy with trade, almost all the towns are in recession.

Yeah, regardless of the game the turk/iranian/persian empire is always the hardest to play. I mean, go play seleukia in Europa Barbarorum

Trying to establish some sort of balance, a center point with which to work from, normally in other TW games it was pretty simple since it was my initial main settlement (capital), not so simple here. Also playing a duel campaign as I've started a MTW2 campaign too, couldn't decide between Turks or Egyptians, but since I have the Kindoms expansion mod (starts in 12th century and incorporates all the units, settlements and factions from all the kindom's campaigns, which makes the England and eastern campaigns quite spicy indeed) I picked Egypt, in order to control the emerging power of the Saracens.
Know of any good ai mods that would improve the Ai of enemies? Preferably siege ai.
EDIT:
Playing as the Seleucids in EB and jesus h christ, 12k corruption, plus an indefensible empire with enemies on every border.

Which also makes it a lot of fun.  Parthia was the only faction in the early versions of Rome II which was worth playing because even the brain-dead AI could pose a challenge when it attacks you from all sides and your geographical position is terrible to wage defensive warfare. Now, 13 patches (!!!) later, Parthia on Very Hard is... very hard indeed, even for veteran players, because the AI finally has some basic idea what to do with its troops on an open field (still totally sucks in sieges though).

the 2.0 was pretty horrible but this has been solid for me so far...
Note that it is a beta build so there are missing features and bugs still.
