Great quotes and monologues
I'd prefer this thread to have more quotes than discussion about them. No need to say, any and all contributions are desired and entirely welcome.
"It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination."
"To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who most want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it.
To summarize the summary: anyone capable of getting themselves made President should by no means be allowed to do the job.
To summarize the summary of the summary: people are a problem."
- Douglas Adams
"If you marry, you will regret it; if you do not marry, you will also regret it;...whether you marry or do not marry, you will regret both. Laugh at the world's follies, you will regret it; weep over them, you will regret that; laugh at the world's follies or weep over them, you will regret both...believe a woman, you will regret it, believe her not, you will also regret that; believe a woman or believe her not, you will regret both...Hang yourself, you will regret it, do not hang yourself, and you will also regret that; hang yourself or do not hang yourself, you will regret both...This, gentlemen, is the sum and substance of all philosophy."
- Kierkegaard

Some of my favorite quotes by the great Thelonious Sphere Monk (in order of seriousness):
"When I was a kid, some of the guys would try to get me to hate white people for what they've been doing to Negroes, and for a while I tried real hard. But everytime I got to hating them, some white guy would come along and mess the whole thing up."
"Sometimes it's to your advantage for people to think you're crazy"
"If my own work had more importance than any others, it's because the piano is the key instrument in music."
Interviewer: "What other interests do you have?"
Monk: "Life in general."
Interviewer: "What do you do about it?"
Monk: "Keep breathing."
...
Interviewer: "What do you think the purpose of life is?"
Monk: "To die."
"Butterflies faster than birds? Must be, 'cause with all the birds on the scene up in my neighborhood, there's this butterfly, and he flies any way he wanna."

"It is impossible to live a pleasant life without living wisely and honorably and justly, and it is impossible to live wisely and honorably and justly without living pleasantly." - Epicurus
"The just man is most free from disturbance, while the unjust is full of the utmost disturbance." - Epicurus
"Self-sufficiency is the greatest of all wealth." - Epicurus
"For centuries, the battle of morality was fought between those who claimed that your life belongs to God and those who claimed that it belongs to your neighbors - between those who preached that the good is self-sacrifice for the sake of ghosts in heaven and those who preached that the good is self-sacrifice for the sake of incompetents on earth. And no one came to say that your life belongs to you and that the good is to live it." - Ayn Rand
"Remember also that the smallest minority on earth is the individual. Those who deny individual rights, cannot claim to be defenders of minorities." - Ayn Rand
"A leash is only a rope with a noose on both ends." - Ayn Rand
"Do not fear to be eccentric in opinion, for every opinion now accepted was once eccentric." - Bertrand Russell
"Religions, which condemn the pleasures of sense, drive men to seek the pleasures of power. Throughout history power has been the vice of the ascetic." - Bertrand Russell
"If dragons were common, and you could look at one in the zoo - but zebras were a rare legendary creature that had finally been decided to be mythical - then there's a certain sort of person who would ignore dragons, who would never bother to look at dragons, and chase after rumors of zebras. The grass is always greener on the other side of reality. Which is rather setting ourselves up for eternal disappointment, eh? If we cannot take joy in the merely real, our lives shall be empty indeed." - Eliezer Yudkowsky
"If people got hit on the head by a baseball bat every week, pretty soon they would invent reasons why getting hit on the head with a baseball bat was a good thing. But if you took someone who wasn't being hit on the head with a baseball bat, and you asked them if they wanted it, they would say no." - Eliezer Yudkowsky
"Through rationality we shall become awesome, and invent and test systematic methods for making people awesome, and plot to optimize everything in sight, and the more fun we have the more people will want to join us." - Eliezer Yudkowsky

Richard Feynman had some great ones, including my tagline.
“Physics is like sex: sure, it may give some practical results, but that's not why we do it.”
¯ Richard P. Feynman
“There are 10^11 stars in the galaxy. That used to be a huge number. But it's only a hundred billion. It's less than the national deficit! We used to call them astronomical numbers. Now we should call them economical numbers.”
¯ Richard P. Feynman
“Physics is to math what sex is to masturbation.”
¯ Richard P. Feynman
“Philosophy of science is about as useful to scientists as ornithology is to birds.”
¯ Richard P. Feynman
“So my antagonist said, "Is it impossible that there are flying saucers? Can you prove that it's impossible?" "No", I said, "I can't prove it's impossible. It's just very unlikely". At that he said, "You are very unscientific. If you can't prove it impossible then how can you say that it's unlikely?" But that is the way that is scientific. It is scientific only to say what is more likely and what less likely, and not to be proving all the time the possible and impossible.”
¯ Richard P. Feynman
“To every man is given the key to the gates of heaven. The same key opens the gates of hell. And so it is with science.”
¯ Richard P. Feynman
“There is no authority who decides what is a good idea.”
¯ Richard P. Feynman
“But there is nothing in biology yet found that indicates the inevitability of death.”
¯ Richard P. Feynman
“The female mind is capable of understanding analytic geometry... The difficulty may just be that we have never yet discovered a way to communicate with the female mind. If it is done in the right way, you may be able to get something out of it.”
¯ Richard P. Feynman
Poets say science takes away from the beauty of the stars—mere globs of gas atoms. Nothing is "mere." I too can see the stars on a desert night, and feel them. But do I see less or more ? The vastness of the heavens stretches my imagina-tion—stuck on this carousel my little eye can catch one-million-year-old light. A vast pattern—of which I am a part—perhaps my stuff was belched from some forgotten star, as one is belching there. Or see them with the greater eye of Palomar, rushing all apart from some common starting point when they were perhaps all together. What is the pattern, or the meaning, or the why ? It does not do harm to the mystery to know a little about it. For far more marvelous is the truth than any artists of the past imagined! Why do the poets of the present not speak of it ? What men are poets who can speak of Jupiter if he were like a man, but if he is an immense spinning sphere of methane and ammonia must be silent?”

Some more:
"The fact is that the average man's love of liberty is nine-tenths imaginary, exactly like his love of sense, justice and truth. He is not actually happy when free; he is uncomfortable, a bit alarmed, and intolerably lonely. Liberty is not a thing for the great masses of men. It is the exclusive possession of a small and disreputable minority, like knowledge, courage and honor. It takes a special sort of man to understand and enjoy liberty — and he is usually an outlaw in democratic societies." - H. L. Mencken
"There are no conservatives in the United States. The United States does not have a conservative tradition. The people who call themselves conservatives, like the Heritage Foundation or Gingrich, are believers in -- are radical statists. They believe in a powerful state, but a welfare state for the rich." - Noam Chomsky
"Society doesn't have values. People have values." - Milton Friedman
"It is unjust that the whole of society should contribute towards an expence of which the benefit is confined to a part of the society." - Adam Smith
"It is better to be a human dissatisfied than a pig satisfied, better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied." - John Stuart Mill

Its not personal,its buisness.
If by chance an honest man like yourself should make enemies, they would become my enemies-and then they will fear you!
My offer is this-nothing...

Here are some I actually use at times. Obviously there are a lot more and a lot longer ones too. Especially in Finnish but this is quite enough for now.
"I can resist anything anything but temptation."
"Life is far too important to be taken seriously."
"In this world there are only two tragedies. One is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it."
- Oscar Wilde, Lady Windermere's Fan, more or less, somewhat modified.
"Sometimes people put up walls, not to keep people out, but to see who cares enough to tear them down."
-Socrates, just a tad modified.
"A hero is someone who faces what he doesn't want to face, not because he wants to but because he has to."
-Anthony Pryor
"Please stop. Watching some of these attempts is making me want to claw my eyes out with my dictionary."
-Psyren
"He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither."
-Bejamin Franklin
"Pain is just a state of mind."
-Rodman Philbrick
"The West won the world not by the superiority of its ideas or values or religion but rather by its superiority in applying organized violence. Westerners often forget this fact, non-Westerners never do."
-Samuel P. Huntington
"Freedom is never granted. It is taken."
-Adapted from A. Philip Randolph
"I like to experience life in all its agonizing glory. I don't want to dull the sensations in any way."
-Callisto
"There must a be a reason for tanking things. And all must be in certain balance.
But what that balance is, must depend only on you, nobody else."
-Me
"Pain is in the mind."
-Me
"Behind our lives there is darkness like there is crimson in the blood in our veins. If you can not see the darkness that your life is based on then you have not been cut deep enough."
-Me, probably altered from someone else
"The aim of any martial art is to kill the enemy in the least amount of time possible. If you disagree, you're doing sports."

"The artist is the creator of beautiful things.
To reveal art and conceal the artist is art's aim.
The critic is he who can translate into another manner or a new material his impression of beautiful things.
The highest, as the lowest, form of criticism is a mode of autobiography.
Those who find ugly meanings in beautiful things are corrupt without being charming. This is a fault.
Those who find beautiful meanings in beautiful things are the cultivated. For these there is hope.
They are the elect to whom beautiful things mean only Beauty.
There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book. Books are well written or badly written. That is all.
The nineteenth century dislike of Realism is the rage of Caliban seeing his own face in a glass.
The nineteenth century dislike of Romanticism is the rage of Caliban not seeing his own face in a glass.
The moral life of man forms part of the subject-matter of the artist, but the morality of art consists in the perfect use of an imperfect medium. No artist desires to prove anything. Even things that are true can be proved.
No artist has ethical sympathies. An ethical sympathy in an artist is an unpardonnable mannerism of style.
No artist is ever morbid. The artist can express everything.
Thought and language are to the artist instruments of an art.
Vice and virtue are to the artist materials for an art.
From the point of view of form, the type of all the arts is the art of the musician. From the point of view of feeling, the actor's raft is the type.
All art is at once surface and symbol.
Those who go beneath the surface do so at their own peril.
It is the spectator, and not life, that art really mirrors.
Diversity of opinion about a work of art shows that the work is new, complex and vital.
When critics disagree the artist is in accord with himself.
We can forgive a man for making a useful thing as long as he does not admire it. The only excuse for making a useless thing is that one admires it intensely.
All art is quite useless."

This is my personal favourit - Something I live by and cherish
Story:
My grandmother, who died last fall, had this little piece of wood hanging on the wall with the qoute on it and a pilgrim next to it.
It was not a pretty piece, but it meant something - and since I could understand english I have loved it. It made sense and I always wanted it.

"Do not let the tempest of vengeance blow out the fire of truth in your heart" - I saw this written on the back of a jacket of one of the organizers at the music festival last week. I'm almost sure it's his own writing or translation because I couldn't anything similar on the internet.
