Mat looked in the clearing and dropped another coin in a patch of light (His seventh one). The fact that he was just dropping so much gold almost made him wince. Almost. But what had to be done for the greater good... besides, he had only been dropping Rincewind's gold.

There sure were allot of these little bugs, weren't there? Mat didn't want to be in sight of them when they began moving along his little trail of gold crumbs. Maybe he could climb up a tree? (If any suitable ones are near-bye, a tree shall be climbed) Regardless, he finds some cover and begins flicking in coins to get some attention...

Fandral:

Dais leads you to the inn, past the disaster area that is now the main tavern area and up a rickety set of wooden stairs. At last he comes to a door and shows you inside.

"This is where he was staying."

The room is average as far as inn rooms go; wooden floor, a single bed stuffed with straw, a few candle ends stuck on metal plates for light. The walls and ceiling are also wood, and there's a single window in the opposite wall with the shutters closed.

When prompted, Dais and his remaining compatriots are able to fill you in on Calimund. Apparently he is a wizard; competent if not the easiest person to get along with, he has a certain habit of making accurate but not very diplomatic remarks. Apparently he isn't much of a social fellow, and likes to study in private—and thus he was alone when he disappeared.

----------------

Mat:

((Sure, we can do a tree.))

You find a decent-sized tree. It's dead, having long ago drowned in the swamps, and big patches of bark have peeled off leaving only slick wood beneath...but it is clime-able, for certain values of such, and you manage to make it up and start throwing coins. The Dragonflies spot the flung coins almost immediately and go after them, catching them out of the air with surprising skill. After a moment or two, one even spots the end of your little trail of golden "breadcrumbs" and the six beasts start backwards down the path, stopping occasionally to swallow the coins and hiss at one another—serpentine bickering.

Koto nodded, crouched down and silently krept into the hallway. He made sure to keep to the shadows. When he got to the door from which the light and voices came out from, he carefully peeped inside with one eye.

Koto:

You sneak up to the open door. A peek inside reveals four figures, equipment in good order, chatting cheerfully to one another. Two of them have torches, the others are digging through a set of very old crates and barrels being stored in the room.

One adventurer holds up a twisted little root. It looks like the root you found among the dwarves' "liberated" possessions, except dry with age and dusty. "What do you think of this, Brent?"

The adventurer nearest peers at it. "I think it's a Phirma Root."

"Ah, no good then..."

What if Elvin was female?

Rincewind goes back into the clearing around the lighthouse and raises his hands up in a sign of peace.

"Hey! Don't shoot! I'm alone here. Look, my friend is the war-like one. I only want to get through this alive. The muscled brute who leads our group will tear me limb from limb if I come back empty handed." Rincewind wondered how much truth was in that lie and shuddered very visibly, "We're just one group and we haven't gone far. What say we make a deal?"

Rincewind waited for answer, all the while trying to pick up any buzzing that might come from the swamp.

Koto looked at the four figures more sharply, trying to see if there was anything to note about them((Pointy ears, size, colour of skin, etc.)) or if they had any of the items needed for the hunt visible. Afterwards he quietly got back to Broïndur.
"Four well equipped individuals, they have yet to notice us, but even a surprise attack won't do us much good I think."

Broïndur gave Koto's words a brief thought.
"Hrrmph. We'de best be tryin' one o' the other rooms then."
Broïndur selected the room diagonally oposed to the opened door and stalked over there. Carefull not to alert the looters. Fairly sure that Koto was but a step behind them. Sheathing his axe and shield.
Quietly, Broïndur jiggled the handle of the door. Yet it wouldn't budge. The door was stuck.
Broïndur grunted slightly, certain that a bit of force the door would budge. He janked the handle and with a loud sound halfway between a rip and a crash, Broïndur tore the handle along with a fair chunk of the door out.

Rincewind:

"Oh really?" calls down the adventurer with the bow snidely. It's plain he doesn't think you have anything they could want. "And what kind of deal can you offer us? If it's more whining about the rules I'm just going to perforate you."

Rincewind hears buzzing...maybe it's a little louder than it had been, a moment before.

----------------

Koto and Broïndur:

((All human-sized and colored, pointed ears on the adventurer who pulled out the Phirma Root. No Scavenger Hunt items that you can see. They look to be warrior-types.))

The now-handle-less door swings open with scarcely a creak, but the noise generated in opening it is more than enough to draw attention from the group nearby. There is surprisingly little speech involved as they drop what they were doing immediately and come together at the chokepoint made by the open doorway. (Koto can recognize the one called "Brent" and the elf at the forefront, Brent raising the torch to spread the light more easily.) They have their weapons drawn, but their movements are cautious.

"Who passes?" Brent calls.

"No need for it, really! I'll buy the glass from you. No one will ever have to know. Not your group, not mine. Here, I have this!"

He raises the medallion high above his head, holding it by the chain and letting it turn around and sparkle in the sun. The buzzing is closer. In another second or so, the creatures should reach the clearing. The front ones might have even caught the glimpse of the medallion already. The time was now. He didn't need to wait for an answer.

"Here, I'll give it to you! Just, please, for the love of all that good, knock down a small piece of glass for me! I don't want to face our leader without it!"

Rincewind swings the medallion by the chain and hurls it upwards into the man's hands.

Rincewind (and Mat):

The adventurer catches the jewelry and smirks. "You realize, we never agreed to give you anything in return you stupid—"

Half-a-dozen Dragonflies interrupt him as they come buzzing out of the swamps, two of them spitting fire in his face, the rest snapping at the gleaming object he holds. He shouts, stumbling out of sight with the necklace still clutched in one hand. Sounds of combat break out as the Dragonflies attack; a few heartbeats later Rincewind hears a long scream ending with a noise that is half splat and half the sound of many bones breaking at once.

The remaining adventurer can be heard battling for a moment or two, but then the sound of an axe cutting air is punctuated by a lot of swearing as smoke begins to curl out the window. By the time Mat makes it back, it has thickened into black clouds rolling out the windows and roof, though the structure as a whole doesn't look to be in any danger.

Fandral paced up and down the room, at times investigating nooks and crannies in the walls, he was pretty clueless.

"So, Calimund was probably studying in this room, he either felt compelled to leave, or was taken by someone (or something) as he slept" Muttered to himself

Fandral began to search to find evidence for either assumption.

Fandral:

You find no real signs of a struggle or break-in. You do, however, find a small pouch of roots, mushrooms and other strange things under the bed; Dais informs you they are ingredients Calimund uses with potion brewing, and that he usually kept it on his person rather like non-wizards carry their money pouches. There is also a book in the bed itself; a casual page through shows it to be some kind of dry history tome. One of the others remarks that he might have been reading in bed again.

Mat looked at the window and then nodded to Rincewind. "Good idea friend." He told his companion respectfully as he began walking to the doorway. Now their might be debris in the way right now, but Mat had this thing called "A really long stick," better known as a staff, that could clear that away rather easily. He just needed to have a little time...

Rincewind looked up with a sense of personal pride. It actually worked. They actually beat two armed men without even fighting them. Sure, there was still the problem of the dragonflies at the top, but he repressed that thought for the time being and let his ego bask in the sun for a change. Mat's attempts to clear the barricade finally awoken Rincewind from his trance and he went to help his companion.

Mat and Rincewind:

The two of you manage to pry the door open with a decent amount of effort. Making the job easier is the fact that some of the debris has burned away—is in fact still smoldering as you push the door inwards.

A fair amount of smoke and hot air wafts out in your faces, but there isn't much left inside to feed the flames; only the remainder of the staircase is still burning in earnest, with a few boxes around the bottom floor giving off their own smaller flames and a few things of metal left relatively untouched. The corpse of the fellow with the necklace is splayed on the ground nearby, thoroughly splattered and slightly cooked, with the corpse of a Dragonfly crushed beneath him. There is no sign of the rest of the Dragonflies from where you stand.

Looking up through the smoke and empty space now above you, on what would have been the third floor in a normal building, you see a sturdy metal framework on which a few pieces of burning floorboards still smoke. There's a hole in one place for where the stairs used to be, and another with bent edges that obviously wasn't put there by the builders ((cannonball damage or similar, if either of your characters has the knowledge to tell)). And, sitting peacefully in the center like a crystal tower amid the wreckage "upstairs", is the lighthouse light, containing dozens of tiny prisms of glass.

((OoCoing a little autoing on Koto, if you don't mind.))
"Who passes?" Brent calls.
Broïndur quickly glanced at Koto, who had positioned himself with himself with his back to the door next to the one occupied by the looters. It was likely the looters did not see him The gnome-like creature was barely visible. Koto glared at Broïndur which either meant "What the hell did you do" or "How the hell should I know". Both seemed rather apropriate, considering the situation but since Broïndur was looking at the looters he could not tell the difference.
Broïndur thought to try to intimidate the looters, their caution making it plausible that they were not looking for a fight.
Broïdur raised his lips in a snarl and threw the remainder of the door he just wrecked into the far corner with contempt.
"None of yer accursed business!" Broïndur al but roared. His deep orcish voice reverberating through the room.

Mat stood at the doorway and held a hand out in front of Rincewind. Pulling out another gold coin, the one-eyed adventurer also drew a throwing knife and braced himself. He flicked the coin through the air and moved with practiced grace to pull out a second weapon as he waited for anything to move towards the turning currency. (He's baiting the flies to pick one or two off before fighting the others.)

Brent lifts the torch higher, illuminating Broïndur more clearly and putting Koto in danger of being seen. No one else moves. "I don't suppose I need to ask why you're here. Are you with Sal's group?"

----------------

Mat and Rincewind:

A minute passes, then two. Nothing appears to attack the coin, and Mat gradually realizes there's no sound of buzzing under the crackling of burning wood.
