HAHA amazing pic! I'm probably the only graphics lover here. =(
I think a part of the problem is graphics are maybe too good for publicity, some companies like to "sell" the slogan: good graphics = good game.
Another problem or change, maybe the biggest one, the market of games today is so big, that simple games or dumbed down games also have their niche. But I might be wrong..

Edit: OMG! FLASHBACK!

THIS IS STILL ON THE FIRST PAGE SO ITS NOT NECROING YES I WIN

.... I'd just like to add my voice to simplicities about defending H4. I was just bored and so looked to see if any new H6 duel tournaments on and found you lot complaining about H4

Why remake the same old games with the same old formula? Take strides in new directions, open up new idea's and possibility. H6 combat wise was definately a step in the right direction IMO. Heroes 5's combat was much shorter and suffered way too much from randomness. You could look at the ATB bar and just know who's going to lose.

But then again, I am a combat orientated guy, and after H4 and H2 H6 has the best combat out of the whole series. It's a shame I almost never play it because it's campaign map is such a bore... and the imbalances... and the game-breaking bugs... and that I will never buy shades of darkness...

And as for the accusation of less units in H4, well you had 8 potential, completly different units to take into consideration. Scouting out exactly which units were chosen was more important than ever. Upgrading isn't really a new unit, it still has a very similar play style compared to it being a different unit (ok sure collosus into titan is a big difference). This doesn't apply so much to heroes 5 since the other optional upgrade sets really did spice the game up in that respect, but as stated before the combat in that game was meh in general in terms of duels due to the huge randomness.

I am also a big believer in low economy being the best way for heroes games. Heroes 2 made it literally impossible to ever buy out all your units in a town, and H4 took a similar concept only slightly less extreme. Both of these made scavenging for gold and being cost-effective feel much more rewarding than H3 and 5. Denying your opponent mines was a huge deal in those games because every speck of resources were NEEDED. In H3 and 5 though the vast majority of mines can be ignored once you have all your buildings, since your only going to need gold from then on and the amount of gold you get from a capital is enough to buy out an army and then some.

I also liked that H6 was more like H2 in being quicker in pace than the other heroes games. I like a game to last 4 hours with an epic clash of armies, not 4 days followed by the same clash of armies.

Now, I won't defend H6 as an amazing game, because it's pretty bad, but H2 and 4 are in a whole different spectrum compared to 1, 3 and 5. H6 tried to bridge the gap from both and ended up falling down the crevasse, but at least it tried being something new. something different. You guys claim to want the old game back, but I can assure you a remake of the old games would never be as good as the old games in your eyes, and new innovation will not be made.

We always complain about a lack of innovation in video games, but really developers just give us what we want.

Just look at Infinity Ward, or look at valve with Half-Life 3... ok that may be prejudging here ... Both of those companies are forced to do the old thing time and time again. Infinity Ward hasn't been Infinity ward since the end of MW2, but we still get the same old CoD instead of new innovation, and Half-Life 3 will be a great game, but it won't live up to our expectations and demands. Half-life 2 is a timeless game, amazing in many ways, just like Heroes 3 and 5 are. Let them be, enjoy them instead of asking for their bodies to be unburied and the franchise completly ruined.

On the otherhand H6 has potentially ruined the heroes franchise anyway, but a remade heroes 3 style game will not be enough to bring it back. We need something new, something better, something that will revitalise the genre. A remake won't do that. A fan-made heroes game won't do that. Ubisoft most probably won't do that, but they're the best we got. Don't demand they milk us for nostalgia, because eventually they will.

.... Wait. Why am I sitting here typing this when I should be making a Hearthstone video?..... C Ya

I doubt that Ubi will sell M&M franchise, they have three projects that are ongoing: Duel of Champions, Migh & Magic X and Heroes Online. My impression is that we will have to wait a little longer for the next HoMM installment.

@Gameslayer989 :
Quick reply, I... H6's combat system is for me awful, lvl 1 units crossing entire battlefield in 2 turns, sometimes one when good morale doesn't make sense at all to me + I hate te square system, hexa is obviously better. Though one thing I really liked that is specific to H6 is the racial gauge, the idea I find very good. H4 siege castle was strange too, no catapult but you could hit the creatures while being behind the wall. Way overpowered heroes in late games as well... I recall I didn't even need an army !???!!
About upgrades I'm really fond of, not only for the eyes to see but also the special caracteristics they would have allowing more flexibilty in combat strategy. So for me regarding combats, despite a few good ideas, H4 and H6 are the worst =)) H2 great though.

I have to agree that a simple remake of H3 wouldn't be enough, I think what we need is an upgraded H3 : H3 + selection of the best elements of the other games, ie H4, 5 and there are some few good things in 6 as well.. Though I cannot play to H6, I tried, I really tried... =))

Well square vs hex isn't really an arguement that can be argued about easily honestly
Less tactical options on a hex because you can only attack from 6 directions whereas 9 from a square? Easier to calculate opponents moves on a hex? IDK...

With the lvl 1 units moving around so much perhaps you should look at it more like this: There are 3 levels of troops. Within that level all the units are (supposed to be) as powerful as each other, they just do different things. A core troops in heroes 6 is really the equivelent of a level 3 troop in heroes 3 IMO, with elite's being level 5 and champions level 7. And honestly I like that the lowest tier of troops is actually a threat, nay a necessity for an army. It really opens up more tactical options on the combat map than otherwise would be available. The trade-off to this however is that it becomes no longer worth it to add elites from a different faction into your army, because of cores being good and the racial gauge, thus almost by necessity they had to add town conversions, something that I think pretty much everyone can agree on as being bad.

In terms of the upgrades I do understand your point with the heroes 5 upgrade system, choosing one upgrade or the other on the fly instead of how H4 locks you into a choice, but in H3 upgrades provided significantly less strategy than actual different creatures in heroes 4.

H4 siege I honestly think is the best siege created in the heroes universe, because it's full of subtle things. sure you could attack enemies behind a wall but they would take only 1/4 damage from the shot because the wall provides max range peanalty, and even then a defender can just move his units back 1 square and thus be out of the line of sight of the archers. Line of sight is something I actually a
m really glad they put into heroes 5, it really does help the game a lot. Units could also attack over walls, but they would do less damage (1/2?) and your creatures would do more (150%?). This presents the problem of do you have enough units to throw into the grinder? It made those few flying units, and the spell flight, much more important than in H3, although in H2 flying units had max movement so I can't say they weren't as important as in H4

Another thing H4 has over H3 is it's spells. They're a lot more varied and interesting than in H3, such as a druid having the abilitiy to summon an army out of thin air, and honestly one of the problems I have with the H5 combat is it took a step back from H4 in that respect. It added some sure, but it took a lot more away.

That's something else I actually loved about H4, every single unit had at least 1 special passive ability to just make them feel more varied and different. H4 was a mix between RPG and the standard heroes model, you can tell that this was their idea by the H4 story line. I don't honestly see why people were so incredibly upset about them doing the ol' 'THE WORLD ENDS' lore wipe at the start of H4 because frankly the lore was only truely introduced in H3, and is on the whole more badly written than 4's. But these unique factors are also in H6. It's not like in heroes 3 where you can have boring pikemen, boring swordsmen, boring angels, boring imps, boring gogs etc. I mean, their upgrades usually had abilities but they just didn't feel as... substantial as the units from H4 and H6. A lot of lore and subtle stories can be gleaned just by looking at their special abilities.

... This was not supposed to be a text wall.... Thankfully this forum doesn't have any side-bar adds so it won't look quite so bad once I get out of this compose window

Edit: no, no it still looks terrible

I completly agree with h4 spell system, btw there is a H5 mod that made it more similar, can't recall which. Anyway, you just made me want to try H4 an 6 again, but I ALWAYS end up playing H3 =)))
There is a big part of onirism in graphics, H3 is just beautiful, though H2 has the best atmosphere. That's why the Heroes I enjoy the most, even in beta state, is H3 seccession Wars mod... Just add to it H4 spell system and passive abilities, H5 racial specs and H6 racial gauge.. =))) I must say I don't find H3 creatures boring at all, though I agree not THAT strategic, but still.. =))

Maybe Ubisoft doesn't haev to do H7, but it would be locked into the whole Might & Magic world...so probably not.

That's your opinion, but at least it wasn't completely shot, which is more than can be said for the stuff that came afterwards (H4 was plain unfinished and H5 and H6 were bugged to hell in their vanilla releases). Ubisoft also completely screwed up the atmosphere, they took the map 'hero' to be the actual hero, rather than figuring out that he was an icon for the army, which gave us the rather idiotic image that the 'hero' could move perhaps 50 feet a day.

I think the main difference there was that up until H4, the adventure map was more symbolic than anything else: every icon there represented an object that was disproportionate to the world in which it was placed. In H5, they changed this to be more life-like, which gave some weird conceptual issues with distances.

To me,Heroes V came the closest to being perfect.Sure it had several bugs and annoying AI but at least it was well made. Also it has a lot of H3 elements so it can be considered a rebirth to the roots in 3D era.

Now I don't know of other turn based strategy games that are worth playing, but from H3 to H5 the music was great. It's a sin they were never fully optimised (except for Wog versions).

Honeslty that's the one thing I think heroes 6 and, to a lesser extent heroes 5, did better than the other heroes games. Heroes 6 had some much better combat themes than the other heroes games. The only problem being that all those combat themes were locked away as being event-based and boss music and we were left with an awful combat theme for standard play. I wish they'd actually have put all the combat themes into the game on random for when you were fighting enemy heroes in multiplayer

Edit: Other turn-based games worth playing you say? Try every final fantasy ever made
Or look on mine and PANCZASU's channel... since unfortunately pan does literally nothing but video's on turn-based games now, when his main strength I've always felt was RTS
