There is a big potential in this game. But is unfinished and resources are mixed bad. Eg. units. Heroes III is ofcourse better but in HIV is a very good idea. If creators would finished it... It was able best than III. A lot of things is modable. And still maybe better do.

Of course you are wrong. Like many players which didn't discover big depth of strategy of H4.

Lol. So you are saying that most of the players are wrong, and you are right? Just to clear things: I like H4, but it has it's flaws, a lot of them.

BrennusWhiskey prefers H4 and plays a lot online, then he organized some tourneys. I mean is normal that he finds H4 to be better, with the energy he puts in.

H4 has its charm, but I agree with baronus that there is so much potential in H4 that wasn't unleashed.

There are many things for me to like about it, but some things should not have been different from the now classic Heroes III that was of course not perfect, but very engaging, fun, and replayable.

I disliked that all heroes from a class started the same and pretty weak and could soon become imbalanced, or that there were just 4 tiers of creatures per town, or that the Citadel and Castle were for defense only and yet quite expensive, while I appreciate the new skills, especially magic, and the quality over quantity approach for creatures - no upgrades - and innovations like Caravans and Potions.

I'm not a big player of H4 also because there was little to choose from after being done with the single maps... lack of RMG.

A respectable effort that unfortunately was not rewarded... and it is still a game lacking in some aspects, and expansions never topped the original Heroes IV stories.

It's such a shame. If H4 would have succeeded we might have had much more advanced Heroes games now, instead of Heroes 3 clones. Let's not talk about the other Heroes game that tried going new ways...
We will see where Heroes 7 is going, but in general I feel like nobody will be able to create a worthy Heroes 3 clone. Actually I don't even want one. We already have Heroes 3, right?
At times I had great fun playing Heroes 4, but it never lasted long for some reason. Maybe due to the AI which isn't exactly challenging as far as I remember. NWC was about to go the right way, but sadly they didn't get a second chance for a game like this one.

And sorry, I have probably messed up some grammar.

I believe Heroes IV was somewhat successful. Not much as Heroes III, but it did have some possibility for the sequel. Hence this article.

But true blame lies in 3DO, who were going bankrupt and pulled NWC along with them.

Well the amount of user made maps should do the trick, once you run out of single player maps. There are lots of them. Including campaigns and many of them have found ways to improve challenge or help the AI. H4 map makers are still active btw.

Oh yeah, totally gotta love Life town opera song and chaos theme was particually good too.

Balanced towns and creatures, specially liked water elements and genies, those fragile little beast, so cute.

Skills like Gradmaster Necromancy and Demonology Summon what ever combo it was.. Good but not too good

Siege fight where epic, that water (moat?) simple but beautiful! Handy that you can attack over the walls even whit melee!

Potion of Immortality, can't use them too much! Black Dragons? No problem.

Cyclops hit's like 7 units at once, how cool is that!

No real hex in the battle, like who needs em' it's not like your creatures run randomply there, is it?

Quicsand abuse. Fun as hell, it takes about 30 turns across the field now, ty my hot seat fried whit who aim not ever playing again.

Fear and First strike combo, can't say did not like that one! Heroes can  do that too, saves your Potion of Immorality (yes, spelled it correct, i think)

Don't you just love how you can scout whit 1 sprite? Or how CPU throws like million of em' in different places and the caravan is full of suprises!

Can't really kill heroes, just capture them. Until someone saves them again, wipee!

Move animations of Satyr, Leprechaun, Squire, Halfling are fantastic. Overall all creatures looks really polished.

Mixed fantions was one nice addition aswell. Not only did you get change to play undead you could go inferno at the same time! Forget creature upgrades, alternative creatures are way to go!

Where is Capitol?, well you don't need that either as you can have covernor who has mining and estates!

Did you think Diplomancy is too costly at times? Don't worry you can go for Charm what is basically the same thing, just cheaper.

Did you notice Necromancer and Death Knights have morale, so they are not undead afterall even the potrait would be skeleton. Death Knight is basically the same as normal Knight, they can learn Leadership tough only half of their units benefits from morale.

It's nice they make it "little" harder to learn 5th level spells in this game. Even the magic hero, takes quite few leves before getting there. Might hero? You better give him/her a bow.

I found it frustrating that there were only 4 tiers total to recruit in Towns, even with choices. But I appreciate the idea and the creatures themselves... though not all of the designs

Inferno creatures in the same place as Necromancer... again frustrating to have two towns in one, they could and should have made them more tied to the Chaos faction, or why not, have an expansion Town. I think such a demonic town along with those creations of his would fit Hexis, for example.

And yes, the magic schools are probably my favorite "new" feature of H4. Especially when you mix them

And I guess I should try some more user maps, yeah. Those "Contest Maps" from Winds of War were more hit-or-miss...

Celestialheavens.com has alot of good user made maps, look at the ratings or top ten lists.
For me H4 was hard to get used to with the change if heroes role and potions, but I've never looked back or left H4 since. For me the opportunities the editor offers are is the reason I still play H4. And it just offers much more than the official releases showed. Sure there are some imbalances, and sure I would love to see Equilibris v3.6. but I must agree, either learn how to mod the game (it can be done) and change what you feel is needed, or accept it for what it is. Alot of the minor issues (like single player balance - AI/OP'ed heroes) has been taken care of in various user made maps/campaigns.
Recently there was a tread on CH about ways to improve AI and how to implement these ideas/script to existing maps and one can only hope that there is enough activity and interest in H4 that skilled programmers see a need to keep working with these matters and continue to improve H4.

Why not have an expansion town?
There was no money. The two existing expansions were attempts to squeeze a few additional dollars from the game, at the time when 3DO was just about to go bankrupt. They added 7 new creatures, some new artifacts, adventure map objects and the campaigns that, iirc, aren't even canon. And that's it. A whole new faction with new heroes, new creatures, new spells, new town design... It was impossible.

I know of the financial problems they had at the time... perphaps under better conditions, the expansions' new features would have been more.

AFAIK there's no working mod for Necropolis town...

The is/was a mod (I think Hellburn made it??), where death faction had all demons replaced by undead Creatures, but personally I never got it to Work, not sure if the link is old/broken, but it exist.
