On every wiki I look it says Sar-Elam ascended to dragonhood, becoming the seventh dragon. Even on Age of Heroes it says that. It would make much more sense if it actually were as you say. I dunno.

I also agree that as far as involvement in Ashan affairs, the Dragon Gods are inexistent. But isn't that because they are spiritual beings rather than material? And if they're physical, where are they? Asha's in the moon, and the rest?

And about the Void. What is the Void in the first place? And are we absolutely sure that it annihilates existences which enter it? I think that's just what it has been interpreted so far. Or seen through the characters' own point of view.

I'd be really disappointed if the Void din't play a big part in the story. It's practically the only big mystery now. I don't know of any other bigger than it.

Not hugely in favour of the whole dragon-gods concept, seems like a lame cop-out compared to the grade of writing NWC gave us.

In the beginning was the void (nothingness), then there was the cosmic egg, and from it emerged the twin dragons Asha and Urgash, and so creation began. The void is the enemy of all creation.

It has been pictured as such but it could well be a natural property, kind of like anti-matter. Other than the herald of the void, there is no hint that the void has an identity or a purpose. And even that isn't conclusive evidence. It might be interesting if there was a sentient force behind it but I might be reading too much into it

Also..

[SPOILERS]

The void team loses Gazal the herald of the void in doc loses, then Sandro in shades of darkness loses, in H5 and dark messiah there is no talk of the void. And it could not have been any other way because.. end of the world and stuff. I don't think ubi will discard Ashan anytime soon.

Actually.....

I was talking to watcher some other day and he said that Heroes VII might as well be the last iteration of the franchise. I don't wanna talk for him, I'm sure he'll tell you himself, but if that's so then we might as well see Ubi throwing Ashan into a huge holocaust before wrapping up.

Why not? I think the TBS genre is pretty much dead. And it doesn't have the shine it used to have. So investing an AAA budget into H7 would be risky to say the least, since it lost popularity and a lot of fanbase especially after H6.

And I played ya ol gamez but... I forgot

Well for one there's a limited amount of back-story for the series itself, but over the series, Enroth (the world) is known to be only one of many that were protected by a high-tech (seemingly magical) race known as the 'Ancients', who are long gone by the time the series takes place. Heroes I is about Lord Morgoth Ironfist escaping his world to Enroth (the continent he arrives on, but also the name of the world) to escape his murderous father, and having to fight for the survival of himself and his people. Heroes II follows the struggle of his sons, the good Roland and evil Archibald. Next up we get both Heroes III and Might and Magic VI running simultaneously on different continents, with the former following the campaigns of queen Cathrine Ironfist, nee Gryphonheart, and the latter Roland and his son Nicolai as they all struggle against the Kreegans (alien invaders canonically speaking). A lot of back-story is provided by the Chronicles series, but since I've never played it, I'm not sure exactly how it relates to the rest of the series, except for its ushering in the events of Heroes IV. This isn't even mentioning the other two Might and Magic games set on Enroth (the world), or the five leading up to it.

To conclude, NWC knew how to build not just a world but a whole sector of space (and how to leave themselves a bit of slack so they don't have to constantly retcon). Ubisoft meanwhile struggles to put together a decent storyline.

You are confusing hardcore, fan-base popularity with casual, fan-base popularity. See this:

According to Erwan, Heroes VI is a commercial success otherwise there would be no other ongoing M&M projects right now, including the M&M fandays.

The game sold quite nicely, and their commitment to the M&M brand in this past years suggest they are going to keep with the M&M brand for long.

What about Heroes Online, Duel of Champions, Might & Magic X? They also foreshadow the end of the M&M brand? And that little project of Limbic that is on the working...

H7 will most likely be an AAA game. And I see no reason to believe is going to be the end of the series.

There's also the recently-released Age of Wonders III and Warlock II: The Exile, and the upcoming corporate titles Galactic Civilization III and Civilization: Beyond Earth, plus a number of freeware titles.

Reduces, yes, dead, no.

Ok I may have exaggerated a bit. It's definitely not dead but it's not as alive as it used to be. I think that there's a shift in popularity for more reactionary games like shooters and mobas while strategy is kinda falling off.

And to stay on topic, I definitely don't see how this kind of Dragon Gods story from Ubisoft can bring back the franchise to its former glory. They should start considering rethinking some aspects of their narration.

or they could dump Ashan and finish Axeoth. At the end of H3/beginning of H4 the whole world was destroyed, then when Ubisoft takes over they also take a dump on the old universe and without any explanation they start making Dragonland Ashan. IMO the old universe was a lot better, why did they have to abandon it? They could add twists and major changes if they didn't like it so much, but not trash it.

I feel that Ashan could have worked if they had more mysticism concerning dragon gods, less fanaticism (Holy Empire, Necromancers...), and more evil characters (like Sandro from HoMM3). Also, they need better storytelling: I never understood how Isabelle's soul was trapped, and why it was trapped (in HoMM5:TotE), or the thing with Sarah in HoMM6 (thank you Elvin for explaining that).

Unfortunately, I doubt that they will return to Axeoth and discard Ashan. They invested too much in their 'baby'.

Yes, and Ubisoft has plenty of brands for that genres. M&M is their fantasy-setting brand, mostly for strategy games (Heroes, CoH, DoC...) and RPG too

@LizzardWarrior: They've made in the past crystal clear that they aren't going back to the old Universe. There may be some easter eggs, exported characters (Crag Hack, Sandro, etc...), but that's about it.

Ubisoft story-writing in the old universe? I'd hate to think of the consequences.

I heard that they threw away the work on H5 that NWC did when they bought the franchise. Anyone knows the direction in which the storyline developed?

And I know old lore had some Sci Fi in it while this one is completely fantasy. Any thoughts on that?
