Potato Salad

The potato salad is exactly why I think this world is a joke lately.

I mean, okay, the thing is funny - but what on earth are you people doing, exactly, giving 60k $ (still growing) to some random guy who posted a screenie of a salad?

My (extremely poor) friend asked many rich Americans for help, he wanted to buy himself a copy of a rare game that is almost impossible to get in Pooland. It's cheap for Americans tho. And he heard "sorry, gaming is too expensive for us" or "go to work".

And yet, people will mass-donate some random pic and give someone a new car. A rather powerful new car, too.

Sheer lunacy. How spoiled rich countries can be, exactly?

Have Americans (to most degree, since they seem to be the most rich) lost their sight and think 1$ is garbage to be thrown at random clowns in the internet, yet will adamantly refuse to support poor e-beggers "just because"? No offense to Americans, of course.

Oh, to put in perspective: I have to work 6 years to get 60k $. Maybe I should start posting pics on potatoes on kickstarter instead.

What value "work" can have after seeing this? How can people actually spend 8-10h every day working in a post office or something equally mind-numbing for 6 years and earn as much as a random dude throwing a potato salad picture in the internet?

There are millions of beggars, (idk how many on this particular site) and feeling fulfillment from helping them for most ordinary Americans is nill. (doesn't even scratch the surface by helping one stranger, so why bother) While on the other hand, there's only one crazy dude with a potato salad. (I'll warrant that there'll be more now)

But yeah, sheer lunacy.

That's rather innocent compared to the guy who put the photo of a cute little rabbit on his site and threatened to cook him if people don't donate 50.000 dollars.

Doesn't the same logic apply if I say:

My extremely poor African friend were collecting charity money for the famine victims in his country and some of the Polish replied that they needed the money to buy some "rare edition" of a computer game. I mean, yes, it's their money but is this what it has come to? People prefer to spend their money on a special edition of a game which is practically almost the same as the regular version, instead of helping people who are starving?

Not that I don't see your point but your choice of example is quite ironic if you ask me.

work has no value, even though everyone claims it has one. when we buy something, we don't care if it took 1 min or 10h to produce, it doesn't have more value to us because the guy sweated more to produce it.

Work does have a value. Work requires someone who works, who has to be paid. The amount of time invested into production of a product is reflected in the price of the product. That's why manually produced goods are generally more expensive than factory produced ones. Of course other factors also play a role, such as the price of the raw materials, advertising and transport.
Also, when you make something yourself, the satisfaction you get from finishing it is higher if you invested more time/work in it.

There is no direct or necessary correlation between the amount of effort you put into your work and its market value. If this aspect reaches to an extreme imbalance, some reaction is inevitable. If you try another perspective, the site is also one of those reactions: It is satire. It is a harmless and humorous manifestation of "the emperor has no clothes."

I see no relation between those two.

My example: people refuse charity gifts but feed some random dude 60k $ for posting a pic, just because.

Your example: People want videogames when people around them are starving

Yes, but what you see as a "charity gift" can be easily categorized as insignificant and absurd as a picture of a potato salad on some internet site. A "rare" computer game is not something that really matters, especially when all of them are available digitally.

There's actually a very simple explanation, Doom. People don't usually like giving to charity, because they earned that money and they expect other people to do the same (whether those other people have the capability for it is usually irrelevant). On the other hand, the potato salad guy gave them a laugh and they decided that a laugh is easily worth a dollar they can spare.

Consider yourself lucky, he's being persecuted isn't he. Erdogan was exposed swindling money, there were phone records and all... We now have him running for presidency instead of prime minister!

On top of that, the guy is giving videos, recipes and possibly a party in return.

Where I agree with Geny's assessment why people don't give to charity, I'd like to add to that the idea that people who give to charity get nothing in return.
Whereas the potato salad kickstarter does give something in return, even if that something is of no significance.
And to the idea of people getting a good feeling, of whatever nature, in return, I would argue that this is a very subjective thing and not everyone gets that feeling in the same amount, if at all.

People spend (ridiculous amount of) money for ridiculous things all the time while refusing to help other people with all sorts of excuses. Frankly this salad is far under the high peaks of human double standards.

That said, I wouldn't give a penny to your friend either. A game is hardly something that one can't do without, except maybe if his condition is pathological. In this case though, he would be in a specialized clinic and denied all access to the Internetz.

Since Romania and Bulgaria joined the EU, there are Romani beggars all over the streets of every Swedish town and city. They are usually very passive and I tend to only give money to those who are actually trying to do something, like playing music.
